Israeli Weapons Firms Required to Buy Cloud Services From Google and Amazon (theintercept.com)

Google and Amazon are both loath to discuss security aspects of the cloud services they provide through their joint contract with the Israeli government, known as Project Nimbus. Though both the Ministry of Defense and Israel Defense Forces are Nimbus customers, Google routinely downplays the military elements while Amazon says...

True, there is no place in the stock market for ethical companies. Unfortunately, most listed companies care only about their bottom line, no matter the human cost

I think we should get a blind match dating app, where we emphasize on the content and not on the visuals. You just add some information about what kind of a person you are, what you are looking for, etc. and after you match and exchange some messages, you can open the pictures.

But dating apps are turning into those cheap e-commerce sites where everyone judges the items by the packaging and no one actually cares about the content. And mind you in a lot of cases the pictures of the packaging are highly exaggerated or from a couple of years, from better times. And you know, no matter how shiny this package is, there would be a day you will need to throw it in the trash and you will need to decide whether to throw the product along or only the package.

Excuse my metaphors.

I have Windows 11 for work and I find the new package manager winget as a Godsend. I am doing all program installations and upgrading over it and it works pretty well. Also the terminal is a very nice addition.

filister ,

I tried to install winget on Windows 10 but that was not possible if I am not wrong. I think the terminal is available but not winget

You do realise that Huawei is a huge company and their smartphone business is a small part of it, right?

Maybe he is a terrorist undercover? Or a Schrödinger's terrorist

    filister ,

Ughhh, don't you see what's happening in Gaza? At the end only money controls the narrative and foreign government's policies. And that's coming from so called developed democracies...

No one cares what is morally corrupt or not anymore, as long as it is beneficial for them.

    filister ,

Yes, that last thing is a deal breaker for me. No open source tool is trying to lock you in. That's the whole idea of open source.

    filister ,

    Or a troll

    filister ,

Sad but true. Munich is extremely expensive for people living there and not owning their homes, which is a large portion of the population and salaries for highly skilled individuals is a complete joke.

    filister ,

He at least looks more like a robot

    filister ,

Have you tried https://shadowsocks.org/? I don't have any experience with it, but heard it is good at masquerading your traffic and making it almost impossible for your ISP to block it

    filister ,

Just ask ChatGPT what it thinks for some non-existing product and it will start hallucinating.

This is a known issue of LLMs and DL in general as their reasoning is a black box for scientists.

    filister ,

You mean exactly like Facebook, right, because there are a lot of parallels but I never heard American politicians want to ban Facebook.

    Let's not fool ourselves!

    filister OP ,

3878 Cybertrucks were produced from November to April, that doesn't bode well for Tesla. Are there any recent numbers of the reservation holders for this abomination? I am curious to know how many have canceled their reservations.

    filister OP ,

It comes just days after Musk announced plans to cut more than 10% of its global workforce.

In a memo issued to staff Musk said there was nothing he hated more, "but it must be done".

I am speechless, are his employees and shareholders buying this ****?

    filister OP , (edited )

Have you seen the difference between the 8 and 16Gb Macbooks, it is ridiculously expensive.

    filister OP ,

Yes, my bad, I wanted to say the difference in price between the 8 and 16Gb model, I know that RAM became dirt cheap nowadays and there aren't any excuses for Apple to continue offering 8Gb model, as this is exactly a planned obsolescence.

    filister ,

I think this is the market model of a lot of American startup companies having a huge financial backbone. Work years even decades on loss in order to catch as much of the market as possible, and once you are a market leader start the enshittification and abuse your market position.

    filister ,

Once upon a time they had Don't be evil in their code of conduct.

    filister ,

I just wonder in the not so distant future, majority of the content online being produced will be AI-generated, hence with lower quality, wouldn't this lead to gradual decrease of the quality of the AI-models?

Best resources to learn more about networking

I have been exploring the world of home servers/self-hosting for a little over a year now, and feel like I have at a decent understanding of a lot of things that go into this. The one thing I am not remotely comfortable with yet is networking. It's like a foreign language to me....

    filister ,

The reality is that you won't learn much just by reading, you need to try to debug stuff and eventually work in the area to truly learn.

But I am sure there are plenty of tutorials and video courses in various platforms where you can learn a bit on the topic. Coursera might be a good place to start as you can enroll for free to those courses if I am not wrong.

    filister ,

Damn, paying 4$ for a gallon, here in Europe the gallon is more than 7$.

    filister ,

You know when something is free on the internet, you are the product

    filister ,

    Try to execute

    ping -c 1000 1.1.1.1

And check for any packet loss and jitter.

Additionally I would also recommend trying a different test server and comparing the results.

Keep in mind that your ISP might also have issues with the connectivity which can be fixed in the following days.

    filister ,

Sorry in that case I would recommend you do iperf and see what the traffic would be. Make sure you whitelist the traffic as well.

    filister ,

SCP encrypts your traffic before sending it, so it might be CPU/RAM bottleneck. You can try with different cypher or different compression levels, which are defined in your .ssh/config file.

    filister ,

https://www.baeldung.com/linux/network-speed-testing try some of the options offered here.

You can also try rsync/rclone too and see how they perform.

    filister ,

The same with Musk. People are seeing him as the sole engineer of Tesla and SpaceX while in reality anonymous engineers did all this possible.

    filister ,

I think in one of his autobiographies he was claiming that he self educated how to build rockets from some books and I wonder how much of this is true and how much is coming from his ego.

    filister ,

Planned obsolescence is indeed a thing. Companies don't want you to stick to your devices forever.

    filister ,

If you ask me, Unraid went the Plex way, enshittification ensues.

    filister ,

Just take some popcorn and watch their IPO crash spectacularly.

I wonder if people in r/wallstteetbets don't decide to short it out, but on the other hand, U/spez will do all in its power to block people calling for it.

    filister ,

That's exactly the lock-in. To be fair, Android are trying similarly to lock-in their users, but at least Google isnot locking their apps to one mobile OS, plus we still have F-droid and a lot more freedom and power over how to use our devices.

    filister OP ,

I guess he cut his avocado toast.

    filister OP ,

I guess NVIDIA doesn't really care about its gaming division, and it is not like Intel or AMD are giving them any hard time either, mostly AMD is playing ball while Intel is struggling to catch up with them.

    filister ,

High time to switch to Linux if you ask me

    filister ,

That's why it is wiser to update when .01 .02 release launches.
