Google's "Manifest V2" Chrome extension phaseout next month is expected to impact the original uBlock Origin extension, which still uses the V2 framework and has 37 million users (www.theregister.com)

The new MV3 architecture reflects Google's avowed desire to make browser extensions more performant, private, and secure. But the internet giant's attempt to do so has been bitterly contested by makers of privacy-protecting and content-blocking extensions, who have argued that the Chocolate Factory's new software architecture...

Those are all chromium based. They all are connected to google and will all have the manifest v3 change.
That is unless they will support v3 but keep some doors open for content blockers ( this is mozillas plan )

DacoTaco ,
@DacoTaco@lemmy.world avatar

What i meant is that chromium is owned and managed by google. If chromium ( and therefor all chromium based browsers ) gets a change, they all do by default. Things like vivaldi or brave will get this change unless they specifically implement ways around it, which i dont think they will.
Though its way less than chrome, chromium still has links with google and has been found to ping google once in a while even though youre not using google.

To be accurate, chrome in itself is a chromium based browser. Its chromium with google stuff slapped onto it.

Its because of this that i find the "but im using [chromium based browser here], so i wont be affected by change x" a false one, because they will.

I am corrected, thanks :)
Im legit surprised they did anything towards the issue, so thanks for pointing it out.
That said, ad blocking is only a part of the problem and there are a lot of extensions that work on content loading in browsers that are going to be invalidated with the chromium update that an integrated ad blocking feature ( that i hope you can customise to your hearts content ) will not fix..

Before i reply, know that i am also against parts pairing at this point in time. Fuck apple for making it popular.

Parts pairing does work against piracy to some level. Ps3's blu ray drive was paired, and had checks to see if it was modded. Changes to the drive would make it not play any content because the pairing verification failed.
Then there is the switch' game cart slot. Its paired with the switch, and has firmware running on it. It also adds a layer of protection.
They arent lying in that statement. What they arent saying is that it totally fucks with right to repair >>

Its a regional thing. In europe whatsapp is more generally used then in the usa :)

Netflix Windows app is set to remove its downloads feature, while introducing ads (www.techradar.com)

Netflix has managed to annoy a good number of its users with an announcement about an upcoming update to its Windows 11 (and Windows 10) app: support for adverts and live events will be added, but the ability to download content is being taken away....

Has nothing to do with their closed eco system. They basically did similar stuff with some of the stuff in the sm3d collection thingy.
Nintendo is a company that only wants make new stuff, innovations.
For example, they ( mostly miyomoto ) has been quoted to not understand that people want another f-zero, as the game's principals and ideas have been fully flushed out and no new ideas could make it feel like something new.
They also usually dont do remakes/remasters unless its so new/different it can be considered a new game ( see metroid 2 on 3ds ).

If that is a smart business position to have, i will leave for you to decide, but do get your facts a bit straight :)

EDIT: also, nintendo has used open source projects for internal projects before, so idk how "closed ecosystem" is part of their stuff :)

DacoTaco ,
@DacoTaco@lemmy.world avatar

Haha, i kinda expected it tbh. The internet hates nintendo and doesnt know how they operate internally. Still wanted to make the comment, as it is needed.

@DacoTaco@lemmy.world avatar

Ye, the sm64 was just a jit emulation, you are correct there. Not gonna deny that either. The sms and smg emulations are interesting and impressive though. They basically use a combination of jit compilation and aot compilation to basically take in the rom and adjust code as they go, but its technically running +/- natively, if i read the switchbrew wiki page correctly, thanks to the aot compilation. I find that impressive, from a technical standpoint.
Could they have added more and do more changes? Yes, ofcourse. Im not saying the fan made stuff isnt impressive, it is and i love it!
But for nintendo, who strives to create new experiences and things, not rehashing older stuff, is why they kept it basic. For them adding that stuff doesnt make sense as the game doesnt add new enough experiences. They dont care if a bug is fixed or graphics are improved. Those dont get you new experiences or gameplay mechanics. Thats what nintendo strives for.

Again, if that is a good stance to have as a company i leave up to others to make opinions on, thats not up to me to decide or voice my opinion on ^^

Fyi, since you seem to know what youre talking about, nintendo's r&d have used open source projects before internally and we assume it is done to look at older games and see how they worked or if they could be used to make projects like sm3d ( without doing what the license doesnt permit )

I will be honest, i am fully against tiktok and everything it stands for.
It should burn in hell.

...However, the law the us passed to ban tiktok makes no sense whatsoever. At its core its as bad as china's grasp on a lot of markets. I believe a more correct way is to ban the practices tik tok does and ban it from federal devices. However, such a law needs more effort and would also get us-based companies in trouble.
But even then, its a way better solution to the problem

DacoTaco ,
@DacoTaco@lemmy.world avatar

... You didnt read my whole comment did you :p
I said the same thing, but more neutral and political :')

DacoTaco ,
@DacoTaco@lemmy.world avatar

I agree fully, but pushing for a law that basically says "apps from a list of 6 countries are not allowed here unless moved to the us" is a bullshit thing and forces them to give the us more power and control over the data. Hence my comparison.

I believe they should put laws in order a la gdpr to protect users from the data stuff. You know, the actual issue of tiktok.

DacoTaco ,
@DacoTaco@lemmy.world avatar

Hm, youre right. It is an uphill battle, and its a battle the eu has been trying to fight with big us tech for a few years now. They too should be punished and limited, just like tik tok. There has to be a way to punish them all, without forcing tik tok to become part of the big us tech family that the us can leach off. Its causing a shit ton of issues and problems that this does not solve imo.
Also, they cant ignore fines if you do it right, but the us will never do it right hehe :p

So, lets just kill off data hoarding and data sharing between platforms. Kill all shit like tiktok, meta, twitter, ... In one fell swoop.

DacoTaco ,
@DacoTaco@lemmy.world avatar

Oh, my idea isnt perfect. Not even close haha
It would cause platforms to become subscription based or be backed by large companies for their own profit ( see linux, github, and every open source, non profit organisation backed and/or managed by bigger companies ). No person on the internet would agree with that and its a hard bullet to bite.

Its just that from a eu citizen standpoint, this ban solves nothing for them. Its like giving the keys to everything for some bad guy to some other bad guy that both want to be above you.

And american citizens also dont benefit jack shit from this. If not, makes it worse for them as the tiktok data can now be used to make their lives worse, easier.

I will say that i agree something is better than nothing and something had to be done, dont get me wrong. I just think it was a half ass, political war bullshit choice they made with the resources they had that solves nothing besides "oh no, china be harvesting more data than us. Quick! Respond!".
Meanwhile some eu countries took on a grander scale and banned tik tok apps on government devices, which does a better job than this imho ( source : https://edition.cnn.com/2023/02/28/tech/tiktok-eu-ban-intl-hnk/index.html ) AND they did it last year :p

There were also ideas pitched around to extend this to all social media apps, but i assume that was shut down due to obvious reasons.

DacoTaco ,
@DacoTaco@lemmy.world avatar

I dont get it, anyone that can explain this one to me? I am completely out of the loop haha

This stuff is why i love my 3d printer. Ive been using it to print new pads for my mouse ( tpu and resin as finish ), clips for my fridge ( pla+ ) and bits and pieces of my porch' flywheel that is on wheels ( petg ).
And recently printed a fidget cube to keep myself busy with

It already has anyway.
Ive requested my discord data once and everytime you do anything in discord it explicitly saves and stores the location of where you were when you interacted with discord.

DacoTaco ,
@DacoTaco@lemmy.world avatar

I no longer have the data on my machine so i cant verify anymore unless i request my data again. However, i remember a discord server im in, enabled that accounts in the server needed to be phone number verified if they wanted to chat. This was done to combat spammers and trolls. i told them to bugger off because im not giving discord my phone number. So its possible my phone number was not in there, but knowing discord it could have been

Im still waiting on them deploying it. I have a windows installation that does not boot using uefi, and therefor can not run vanguard. So when they deploy it its finally bye bye league after 14 years haha

Just my personal 2 cents of owning a plug in hybrid : i sometimes drive with an empty battery because the range is 50km max, and my landlord refuses to allow me to install the infrastructure to charge at home, even if i'd pay 50% of the costs. There are also people parking in electric parking spots without charging OR being an electric car, denying me of charging publically. Its a whole mess..

That said, 40% of all km i drive are full electric.

DacoTaco ,
@DacoTaco@lemmy.world avatar

At least in my country public charging is popping up everywhere, but slowly. Not enough resources is poured into it because they think charging is not a thing yet. Thats bullshit ofc, and there is a reason i have my hybrid car. Also, you can charge at home from a regular power plug, and hybrid cars shouldnt need more than that to charge overnight or over 5h time. However, if you live in an apartment like me, you are royally screwed if the owner doesnt comply. Same with solar panels, but thats a different discussion for a different time haha

DacoTaco , (edited )
@DacoTaco@lemmy.world avatar

Be careful, not all landlords are pieces of shit. If i was one i'd do it, and im sure im not alone :)

Same. I have an a3 tfsi-e and the adaptive cruise control is subscription based ( which i learned after i started leasing ).
Last audi i will have.

Apple Walks Back Decision to Disable Home Screen Web Apps in the EU (www.macrumors.com)

Following the release of the second beta version of iOS 17.4, it emerged that Apple had restricted the functionality of iOS web apps in the EU. Web apps could no longer launch from the ‌Home Screen‌ in their own top-level window that takes up the entire screen, relegating them to a simple shortcut with an option to open...

This.
I got a github copilot subscription at work and its useful for suggesting code in small parts, but i would never let it decide what design pattern to use to tackle the problem we are solving. Once i know the solution i can use ai, and verify its output to use in the code

@DacoTaco@lemmy.world avatar

Gigabytes, or gibibyte? Yes gibibyte is a thing.
As much as i hate to say it, but due to marketting fuckery the usage of byte has ruined it all as a 2TB drive is not 2 * 1024 * 1024 * 1024 * 8 bits but instead 2 terabit ( 2*1000000000 )

Then comes the discussion if "1KB" is 1024 bytes or if 1000 bytes is a kilobyte.
If you ask me, 1KB is 1024 bytes. If you ask the people using the kibibytes system, 1KB is 1000 bytes...

Shits fucking complex and fucked up. Cant go wrong if you say it in bits though

DacoTaco ,
@DacoTaco@lemmy.world avatar

My mistake, fixed it :)

DacoTaco ,
@DacoTaco@lemmy.world avatar

I never knew the whole thing was considered part of the metric system, makes sense though.
I love the metric system to death because its so simple and easy, and it links different measurements together ( 1l of water = 1kg etc ).

That said, a computer works differently and because we work in factors of 2, 1000 bytes being a kilobyte makes no sense once you start working with bits and low level stuff. Other than that, i can see why the stuff was redefined.

Also, i think linux also works in factors of 1024, but id need to check

DacoTaco ,
@DacoTaco@lemmy.world avatar

I agree with what you said, and its imo why the discussion of a factor of 1000 and 1024 will always rage on. Im a developer, and do embedded stuff in my free time. Everything around me is factor 1024 because of it, and i hate the factor 1000. But from a generic user standpoint, i agree its a lot more user friendly, as they are used to the metric system of a factor of 10

Polish Hackers Repaired Trains the Manufacturer Artificially Bricked. Now The Train Company Is Threatening Them (www.404media.co)

In one of the coolest and more outrageous repair stories in quite some time, three white-hat hackers helped a regional rail company in southwest Poland unbrick a train that had been artificially rendered inoperable by the train’s manufacturer after an independent maintenance company worked on it. The train’s manufacturer is...
