DrRatso ,

The apology video is pure gold, she reads it with this “can we just get this off the agenda already” look.

DrRatso ,

But like, 3.5 to usbc is a 10 buck conversion. Tbh i see merit in double usb c over usbc and headphone jack, might be more doable too, the DAC prolly takes more space than an additional usbc

DrRatso ,

I hear you, but a usb-c has more uses than one, the only real problem with a dongle is now is that occasionally you need to charge.

DrRatso ,

Just reading that gave me a headache. In Latvia, heres how the system works.

If you have no deductible spending (medical, education, donations).:

  • Log into the govt system.
  • Press a button to generate tax form.
  • Press verify and submit.
  • Pay what you owe or wait for the tax return.

If you have deductible info

  • As before but also scan your receipts, and add the info on each receipt to the form. Can done easily via an app, which handily (sometimes correctly) can autofill the needed info. You can do this at any point in time, so you can do it whenever you get a deductible receipt.
DrRatso ,

The problem I have with this naming scheme as a consumer is it is hard to find which models are roughly equivalent. Like theyll have their mumbojumbo generic name like ABC24P and this is what you find on reviews but then theres ABC24PE, ABC24PU, ABC24PI3Q and often finding info on if it is just some regional release, different panel or what is actually the difference is problematic.

DrRatso ,

Fucking love my instinct solar 2

DrRatso ,

Trackers can do so much more than just take time for running. Cadance, ground contact time, recovery, suggestions. My garmin watch has upped my training game considerably. Its a bit like having an online personal trainer.

DrRatso ,

People do say that, but then that does not make the song more enjoyable, to me at least.

Theres a difference between “he recorded that in a camper van, thats pretty cool” and “daamn that was recorded it a camper van”.

DrRatso ,

The Quran immoral because because of the messages it conveys. The only way we can really say the people who wrote it were immoral is by inferring it from the work itself.

There are many times where the work / product / art stands on its own, and should you not know anything about the author, could not possibly be called immoral on its own merit. Admiring work like this, need not automatically validate the evil of the artist.

Just because you acknowledge that some aspect of something otherwise evil is good does not mean have to automatically excuse the bad, however you can recognise the good thing for just being good, on its own. You happily benefit from the work of shitty people, probably daily, it might even save your life one day.

Losing your appreciation for “something good” because of who made it is a perfectly reasonable take. But so is “something good” is good despite who made it.

Side note, genuinely wondering, is the Taj Mahal that intertwined with islam where we would not have it without? At the end of the day it is a tomb, and as far as I understand the biggest reason for it being built is love for the emperors wife

DrRatso ,

I will soon have to confront the brain tumor that I surely have, which makes me play League, as they are going to roll out Vanguard anticheat. I sorely wish there was an alternative with similar vibes, DotA is too sweaty for me and not as fun mechanically.

DrRatso ,

So just run archinstall Personally as a relative newbie I found arch a lot easier to deal with than fedora and ubuntu, both of which have had me in dependency hell on previous attempts to switch to linux. Not only that but I have a much better idea of what makes up my system.

"A dream. It's perfect": Helium discovery in northern Minnesota may be biggest ever in North America (www.cbsnews.com)

"A dream. It's perfect": Helium discovery in northern Minnesota may be biggest ever in North America::For a century, the U.S. Government-owned the largest helium reserve in the country, but the biggest exporters now are in Russia, Qatar and Tanzania. With this new discovery, Minnesota could be joining that list.

DrRatso ,

Wdym? The only difference is the helium gas used in more serious applications is more pure. Its helium all the same.

DrRatso ,

Helium-3 is not used in general applications, its uses are far more niche, it is much more rare than helium 4. For most applications, when we talk about helium being used we mean plain old helium-4. MRI machines and balloons both use helium-4.

Reddit has never turned a profit in nearly 20 years, but filed to go public anyway (www.cnn.com)

Reddit has never turned a profit in nearly 20 years, but filed to go public anyway::Reddit, the message board site known for its chronically online userbase and for originating much internet discourse, filed for its long-anticipated initial public offering on Thursday.

DrRatso ,

Ads don’t even bother me inherently. It’s part the maximum obnoxiousness of them these days, of course. But most of all, if I do manage to see an ad (like in a mobile app), I get irrationally annoyed at the fact that it is supposed to be tailored to me and yet here I am looking at a 20 second unskippable ad for something I would never in a million years care for.

DrRatso ,

I had not nuked my account history, because while reddit went to shit for me, I still used it as an info source via search. And so I wanted to leave my posts/comments in case they add value to someone else, who still uses the platform. But with this, if I am not lazy, I just might. I don’t even care about the AI training bit, rather that it is Google AI.

DrRatso ,

I know people said reddit restored their mass overwtitten comments, but iirc this was a brief scare due to some problem with the tool used or servers or something. I think reddit even officially commented that they are not doing this.

DrRatso ,

Many people dont actually delete, but edit the content. Also, even if the data stays and gets used for training, so be it, not more you can do about it, at least I tried. But mass purging your account history still makes the site worse for searched topics and is the last bastion of resistance after shuffling off that cesspool.

The Global Green Energy Transition Has an Uyghur Forced Labor Problem, Report Says (investorsforhumanrights.org)

The solar and electric vehicle industries are critical for the world's urgent transition away from fossil fuels. However, both industries source many of their critical inputs from the Uyghur Region, a region where the Chinese government is systematically persecuting the native Uyghur, Turkic, and Muslim-majority peoples,...

DrRatso ,

Since caring about them means you can stave off green energy.

DrRatso ,

Another vote for Garmin instinct (2 solar in my case). Not E-ink but oldschool style black/white LCD. Full charge with nightly pulsox is just above 2 weeks, would be 3 if i turned off nightly pulsox. With solar, if you are active outside and have a sunny climate, you probably do not need to charge basically at all.

There is also the instinct crossover for the hybrid look. But first series instincts are supposedly hit or miss on the software. And trust me, the whole analogue watch thing is nice for looks, but really you will not look at it if you have a digital clock on the watch face.

DrRatso ,

Noone is being prohibited from using the code, the code can be used if they comply with the license, which they didn’t.

Do they make money off the snakeoil from artists? No. But they still make money off the snakeoil, they made quite a bit of it with glaze in the form of research grants etc, likely the same with nightshade. And in the end they just peddle false hope.

DrRatso ,

Is self scan that rare around you? One of our (Latvia) two big brand supermarkets have scanners you carry around, then deposit at the slef checkout lines. The other one, however, I just scan everything with my phone, then at checkout scan a QR code with my phone and pay.

DrRatso ,

Yea, no. The supermarket I shop at, I just scan everything with my phone as I go, scan a QR code at self checkout and pay.

Worst case I have to wait 2 minutes for someone to do a verification scan (5 random items crom my bag) or wait for them to verify my age.

Amazon pricing makes no sense.

We have been buying extra strong PG Tips British tea from Amazon because we think American tea is way too weak. 3 boxes of 80 were about $40 last time I bought them a few months ago. They’re now $80. Thankfully we discovered we can get an order of 6 for $60, but we have to wait until mid-February for the to arrive. Meanwhile,...

DrRatso ,

Just stop buying bagged teas, that was always the real scam anyway. Look into local tea shops / cafes and buy loose leaf teas. They will be fresher, and a lot more flavourful.

DrRatso ,

You are just moving goalposts here. None of these scenarios are particularly relevant anyway. Even if the phone shell cracked, the battery casing would be enough to shield from the radiation. And what does throwing the phone in the trash have to do with keeping it in your pocket.

DrRatso ,

I think this depends. People who need basic computer functions can get on very well with linux.

My classmate in highschool had ubuntu on his home pc as long as I remember, because someone preconfigured it for them and it was mainly a browser - schoolwork machine. He gamed on XBox. There was no hassle, it was fine.

My mom on her run down laptop has mint now, because I configured it for her. I haven’t heard any complaints.

E: Also many hospital here run Linux and it is just fine, and trust me, many of the medical staff are barely tech literate enough to register for email themselves.

Linux is a problem for people who come from windows and need more than basics but are not tech savvy enough to get their hands dirty. Then once your comfort level with tinkering goes up again, Linux is once again not a bad recommendation. It really kind of is the bell curve meme.

All these packages, and none to take a proper screenshot.
