Brave's native adblock works better than anything else I've tried.

Give Brave a look, folks.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

False.

They sold data from Brave search, which you don't have to use. (and I don't.)

Also, the crypto thing is also opt-in. You don't have to use it either.

It works better than Firefox, especially if your aim is blocking ads.

@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

I think that, if you're going to pretend to know what you're talking about, you should know what you're talking about.

I think it's a good thing that a person as to willingly opt-in to data collection.

It's really that simple.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

That's fine. Do what you like.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

They still sold user data without being upfront about it until caught,

And then they did better, as a business should. It's all in their FAQ.

I'm not sure why there has to be a circle jerk of trolls any time someone mentions Brave, but here we are.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

I switched to Linux this week. I highly recommend it.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

They didn't miss it. They just report on what they're told to by their owners.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

It's exactly what they wanted.

This is about control and punishing perceived undesirables. Cruelty is a feature, not an unfortunate byproduct.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

the real winner will likely be Apple and Macs

I'm sure they will find a way to enshittify in a equally intrusive manner.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

Very.

The major social media sites were programmed to feed people content that convinces them that their opinions are fully valid while also keeping them perpetually angry, all to keep their eyeballs glued to ads.

When content synthesized by AI gets more sophisticated, we won't be able to tell the difference.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

I'm going to have to check that book out.

It bugs me seeing the extent to which people's worldviews are based solely on their favorite news networks.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

When have mass graves ever bothered the wealthy? They own the news.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

This is going to go the same way Napster did.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

Really, I just mean 'in the courts'.

When American business interests just decided to unite and collectively steal all of the IP on the Internet, it was always going to end up in the courts. Neither Congress nor the President will act because, by and large, the people doing the thieving are their golf buddies and fund their campaigns.

FlashMobOfOne , (edited )
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

LOL

Because giving people the option to opt-in to the platform that birthed the resurgence of Fascism worked out so well. I'm good with not hearing your weird uncle's incoherent rants about chemtrails and lizard people, thanks.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

I've wanted to see this in the US for years.

I'm doubtful it can happen, but it is more than fair of the author to point out the multiple labor wins over the last year as evidence that maybe it isn't a pipe dream.

Instagram Advertises Nonconsensual AI Nude Apps (www.404media.co)

Instagram is profiting from several ads that invite people to create nonconsensual nude images with AI image generation apps, once again showing that some of the most harmful applications of AI tools are not hidden on the dark corners of the internet, but are actively promoted to users by social media companies unable or...

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

Define 'better'. I'm not sure that word means what you think it means.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

I distinctly recall telling you all that, once he gets elected, we're going to find out just what a run-of-the-mill Washington asshole he can be.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

Plus all the partisans care about is team color. Vote blue no matter who, or whatever.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

The first two paragraphs sum this up pretty well: "To understand the current headline-dominating furor over the protests taking place on college campuses against the war in Gaza, think about the death toll of each. As of the time of writing, more than thirty-four thousand Palestinians have been killed by the Israeli military in Gaza, almost certainly a massive undercount. On US campuses, that figure is zero.

It’s this cosmically vast discrepancy in terms of “harm” and “safety” that more than anything explains the absurd and ongoing freakout over college students protesting the war on Gaza — one that would be laughable if it weren’t so menacing."

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

I've been using ChatGPT in conjunction with search engines just to find things I need. For instance, I did an April Fools presentation for a work meeting and needed humorous real-life legal stories, so the AI was able to provide suggestions.

I also use it to for simple tasks, like organizing info into a table.

Mainly, though, my reason for using it is that, since I work in tech, I'm going to need to know how to use it well, and the best way to do that is being hands-on.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

Agreed. I love using ChatGPT for content suggestions.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

I love that the top comments are all "I don't", as if that's helpful in any way.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

I love that this and more funding for other countries' wars are a higher priority than the housing crisis.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

I would accept that as an excuse if the Democrats did anything meaningful when they have a majority, but they don't.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

First, you should put this in air quotes: "a major healthcare reform". It's only a reform if you the consumer can absorb the price gouging required to access our health care system in the first place.

Secondly, Obama had a supermajority for a time. He could have done anything if he'd have been willing to do the work.

Americans can't eat excuses, and for me at least, it's no longer acceptable to simply be slightly less conservative than the other conservatives.

FlashMobOfOne , (edited )
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

Respectfully, the "fight them there so we don't fight them here" and "help them stand up so we can stand down" nonsense is straight out of the chickenhawks' war branding guide. Our government wasted tens of trillions on these meaningless platitudes in Afghanistan and Iraq, and those boondoggles led to the rise of ISIS.

Meanwhile I can look over the border and see Mexico spending a mere 8 billion a year on war and Canada a mere 26 billion. Meanwhile we're up to a trillion and a half this year, but sure, it has nothing to do with the housing crisis or the standard of living in this country. We're definitely not neglecting our own people to feed an insatiable war machine.

Frankly, I'm sick of watching our government impoverish our people to pay for more super yachts for warmongers.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

LOL

The only protests this country seems willing to protect are Pro-Nazi.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

It's going to be really depressing to see how little people care about this when the split is 49% to 49% in November too.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

That's kinda the point. It says something about your principles when you just kind of ignore that your guy is just as bad as Trump on any issue.

Dems have a primary candidate who would oppose Israeli genocide: Marianne Williamson. Her stated principles fall far more in line with what Democrats claim to support, but she's gotten zero delegates in the primary, whereas Genocide Joe is already the presumptive nominee.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

I mean, you can argue for irrelevance, but it doesn't change the fact that 49% of the voters are likely to look at Genocide Joe, who is facilitating Israeli pogroms, and lie to themselves about the kind of people they are in order to vote for him.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

Can't blame them.

The US loves being in a dozen wars at once, and our people even support funding other countries' wars now. We're the most prolific warmongers on the planet.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

It would be really nice if we weren't so vulgarly neglectful of our own people in service to war. Canada spends 26 billion a year on war. And Mexico, a mere 8 billion.

War is a blank check in this country because it makes a handful of people obscenely rich.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

Yeah, there's no way.

With our major media networks owned by billionaires, and all of them propagating the narrative that criticism of Israel = antisemitism, I think it's a fair presumption that they all have a naughty words list.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

This is Democrats' M.O. for most issues.

They spout platitudes and promises like a geyser during election season, and then when the reins of power are in their hands, they ignore pretty much every other issue and figure out ways to put money in the hands of warmongers and CEO's.

On the issue of Israel, Democrats and Republicans have exactly the same position.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

HA, funny that this comes up. DND Beyond doesn't have a d100, so I opened my ChatGPT sub and had it roll a d100 for me a few times so I could use my magic beans properly.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

Also an excellent method.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

That's helpful. Thank you.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

Agreed.

They're still fighting tooth-and-nail to get people back in the office physically five days a week. It's unthinkable that we'll ever have a fundamental change to work hours.

FlashMobOfOne , (edited )
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

You can't really engage as a consumer without enabling shitty practices on some level, and that's particularly true of electronics.

The phone you're using to access Beehaw? Assembled by child labor or wage slaves somewhere in Asia. Even if you assembled it yourself, the parts were manufactured unethically.

It's not just Amazon or Nestle. You might as well criticize someone for breathing because unethical consumption, on some level, is inevitable, particularly so if you live in a capitalist country.

I use Brave because its ad block feature works better than the others I've tried, plain and simple.

But, by all means, people can still be as holier than thou as they like.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

Don't get me wrong. I do the best I can to be ethical in my choices, but it's just a pet peeve of mine to see people behaving in a holier-than-thou when it's simply impossible to achieve what they're pretending to achieve.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

Their whole argument was based on anonymous blog posts, and yet, that'll be more than enough for the fascist wing of the court. Just wait and see.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

many people are unwilling/unable to adapt to a world where all their old ideas/skills are useless.

I'd never considered that before, but it makes so much sense. It's difficult for me to understand people being unwilling to adapt to changing times, personally, but that makes total sense.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

As if I need to hear more excuses from that man.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

If only Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders had the power to hold them accountable in some way.

/s

At what point do we stop giving people credit for saying things and doing absolutely nothing else to create change and stop genocide?

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

Good.

Every instance should block Threads.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

Strongly disagree.

Facebook is a major component of the return of fascism in the United States. Arguing for allowing them to federate is like arguing for ISIS to be part of the fediverse.

No. This isn't the matter of making a choice. This is a matter of ensuring that outright poison isn't allowed into one's system.
