Good question. My wife's RAV4 has a rear door that will only close if you press a button. You can't close it manually. Furthermore, it's on the door while it's open and my five foot tall wife can barely reach it. It's ridiculous.

Instead, we got...

Except Homer also runs the company.

You know, that's true and it didn't even occur to me. I guess she just wouldn't have bought it? (I would have been fine with that, I hate SUVs, even hybrids.)

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I'll let her know about that. Thanks.

Yep. I had an XR. I kept it until the battery started dying. Now I have a 13, which I got refurbished when the 15 came out so it was not all that expensive. I'll keep that until the battery starts dying and do it again.

And really, the only reason I'm sticking with it at this point is that I'd probably have to spend several hundred dollars to replace all the paid apps and games I have. If there were some way I could just transfer all of them to an Android, I'd probably get one.

Google Search is getting even worse for independent sites (www.theverge.com)

In February, HouseFresh managing editor Gisele Navarro called out publishers like BuzzFeed and Rolling Stone as some of the culprits that publish content about air purifiers despite a lack of expertise — but Google rewards these sites with high rankings all the same. The result is a search results page filled with SEO-first...

I've been using the internet since before the web existed.

I could swear there was a time that it didn't suck, but I can't remember when that was.

Of course, it sucks more now, but...

Even "honest reviews" aren't all that honest. My mother is an Amazon Vine affiliate, which is a program where they send you stuff for free and you write a review and get to keep it. They aren't overt about it, but they make it fairly obvious that you're supposed to write reviews that are positive overall.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I can't speak for it myself. I just know she told me that they keep sort of doing a wink wink, nudge nudge about making the reviews more positive than negative.

Although at least your computer doesn't slow to a crawl every time you go to the wrong Geocities or Tripod page with a million gifs and a custom cursor. Also, would you like to install Bonzi Buddy?

Also, for all of you who lived through the Eternal September, "me too!"

But even back in the IRC and USENET days, there were plenty of asshole Nazis and petty arguments and such that it made the internet pretty unpleasant quite often if you didn't watch where you contributed.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Which is great until they hit you back. I was lucky in that I was using my dad's university account which was pretty immune to petty bot DDoS attacks, but I was also not a Nazi troll. I was just attacked by Nazi trolls who thought they could take my connection down.

My daughter has a Windows 10 notebook for school. We haven't seen a reason to upgrade yet. If Windows made a "never bother you again about anything you don't want to be bothered about" version of Windows 11, we'd upgrade because that's so fucking annoying. I hate Windows.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

It's not just Windows. I have an iMac (I used to be a video editor and it's standard) and it's 7 years old, so still Intel, and I'm still running Big Sur, which is 3 versions behind, on it because why bother upgrading when I get no advantages out of it?

FlyingSquid OP ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

True, although I'm guessing "you can't baptize someone in Gatorade' would be something virtually all Christians would think.

FlyingSquid OP ,

I think it's one of those 'spirit of the law, not letter of the law' things.

Rabbit R1 is Just an Android App (lemmy.world)

See, it turns out that the Rabbit R1 seems to run Android under the hood and the entire interface users interact with is powered by a single Android app. A tipster shared the Rabbit R1’s launcher APK with us, and with a bit of tinkering, we managed to install it on an Android phone, specifically a Pixel 6a....

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, if you weren't convinced this was a waste of money before finding out that it's like this, you're not going to be convinced by this.

    FlyingSquid ,
    @FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

    There are witnesses to the puppy murder (construction crew) so this is her way of getting ahead of the story before someone else tells it (AFAIK so far we’ve only heard her version; maybe reality is even worse)

    That is what Democrats in the state legislature are claiming. That this was known in a lot of circles already and there were witnesses.

    So this was damage control. The worst attempt at damage control I've ever seen.

    Even Republicans love dogs.

    I think it was more about checking his email while his car was in Autopilot mode as if that were a safe thing to do.

    (For anyone unclear on that, it is absolutely not a safe thing to do.)

    FlyingSquid ,
    @FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

    Of course not.

    What are you, crazy?

    I'd be listening to NPR.

    Mosolov's The Iron Foundry at top volume. But only if you want to piss off some asshole sitting in their own car listening to shitty corporate hiphop at top volume and you have louder speakers than they do.

    Or, I suppose, the 1812 Overture, but then you have a long wait before the 'piss them off' part comes in.

    people who are upset over self driving cars

    If you are talking about Teslas, you can't be upset about something a car doesn't actually do unless you think it's actually capable of doing it.

    The only thing I don't like is that Tesla is able to claim it has a "full self driving" mode which is not full self driving. Seems like false advertising to me.

    I'm pretty sure they are the leaders of tomorrow what with their generation inevitably taking over leadership when the old guard dies. So... Iran and Hamas made a factual statement? I guess that's kind of news?

    Or- here's a theory- they all went to Walmart and got the cheapest tent available.

    I guess that doesn't involve some sort of conspiracy though, so it's more boring.

    Edit: also, the photo in this article along with many others I'm finding suggests you need to get your eyes checked.

    I'm looking forward to their "Dynamic Product Ads" system to coming back to bite them in the ass when ads for Nestle products appear next to posts talking about whatever horrific thing Nestle is doing this week (and similar things).

    I wasn't a mod, but I did participate in the blackout as a user and I did not immediately switch to Lemmy when it was over. It took about two weeks to get over the whole 'FOMO if I leave Reddit' and 'I've spent over a decade here' sunk cost issues.

    So I don't blame anyone for not immediately switching to Lemmy, but if you haven't jumped ship from Reddit by now, especially if you're doing thankless mod work for people who don't appreciate you, I have little respect for you at this point.

    And let me take this opportunity as someone who mods several lemmy.world communities to say that I do not feel that the .world admin are unappreciative at all. In fact, exactly the opposite. And they're working for free just like I am, so it is a whole different scenario anyway.

    FlyingSquid ,
    @FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

    There is only one thing Reddit has (or had anyway) that I regret not having on Lemmy, which is a robust community for my U.S. state and a small one for my specific town. There's really no good place for discussions of that nature that approach anywhere near anything beyond flame wars anywhere else on the internet that I can find.

    But I'm still not going back.

    In this specific case, it's exactly the reason Cory Doctorow invented the word.

    Here is how platforms die: first, they are good to their users; then they abuse their users to make things better for their business customers; finally, they abuse those business customers to claw back all the value for themselves. Then, they die. I call this enshittification, and it is a seemingly inevitable consequence arising from the combination of the ease of changing how a platform allocates value, combined with the nature of a "two sided market", where a platform sits between buyers and sellers, hold each hostage to the other, raking off an ever-larger share of the value that passes between them.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enshittification

    FlyingSquid ,
    @FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

    But that would have been to assume the blackout would fail, and I think a lot of people didn't think it would. I was dubious, but I think I was in the minority there.

    FlyingSquid ,
    @FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

    If anyone looks up my profile there, it says something like 'Fuck Reddit! Reddit sucks! Go to Lemmy!' but that's the best I can do at this point.

    I'm pretty sure it's why I didn't get an IPO buy-in offer despite having super high post and comment karma too.

    FlyingSquid ,
    @FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

    I think you're really underestimating how people are pulled in by sunk cost. I think many people, especially mods, earnestly believed that because they had invested a lot of time and effort into Reddit, Reddit would listen to them if they protested.

    That's not their fault, that's just human nature. You were able to overcome that, which is good, but I don't blame anyone for not being able to at the time. A year later is another matter.

    FlyingSquid ,
    @FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

    It might have been obvious to you, but I really don't think it was obvious to everyone and I don't think you should assume that. I saw plenty of talk from people before it happened that were absolutely convinced it would change things.

    A kid can't go into a head shop and buy a vaporizer either. Because kids can't go into head shops. This isn't about head shops. This is about ordering things over the internet. If you order a cannabis vaporizer online, which is less common to imbibe weed with and generally more expensive, you have to sign for it when it's delivered. If you order a bong or a pipe online, you don't. That makes zero sense.

    FlyingSquid OP ,
    @FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

    So you're saying this stops kids from using cannabis on the street (despite the fact that cannabis vaporizers also smell) but in no other way stops them using it? What's the point of that? They just go use it in the park anyway.

    FlyingSquid OP ,
    @FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

    You responded to a tiny part of my overall post which wasn't especially relevant. That is very dishonest. Please respond to the rest. I will repost it without that part since you have addressed it (not to my satisfaction, but we won't go into that):

    Not as high as they thought, though. Which is why all the streaming services are losing customers and getting super desperate.
