Netflix Windows app is set to remove its downloads feature, while introducing ads (www.techradar.com)

Netflix has managed to annoy a good number of its users with an announcement about an upcoming update to its Windows 11 (and Windows 10) app: support for adverts and live events will be added, but the ability to download content is being taken away....

@GlassHalfHopeful@lemmy.ca avatar

It's possible that the move means Netflix can save some money on licensing, which may cost extra if downloads are included – enabling users to take shows and movies around with them and watch them without an internet connection.

Maximize profit. Good for them. Never good for us. Never.

Why is it so terrible to build a company that people love?

Trunk Monkey Mobile would have been better. 🐒

I love ads. I love what Microsoft and the likes are doing.

Said no one ever

GlassHalfHopeful ,
@GlassHalfHopeful@lemmy.ca avatar

Haha. Are you telling me that we all don't mutually love these attempts to personalize advertisements? There's nothing better than knowing our personal information is being used for our benefit this way. Look at films like Blade Runner. I can't wait to have bright fluorescent ads on every corner and open space.

Without these things, how else am I going to know which medication I should be insisting my doctor prescribe me? And clearly this insurance company with the funny ad is totally going to be there on my side when something happens. That's why they made the commercial, duh. So I would absolutely be certain I can trust them to quickly and fully process a claim.

There's nothing cozier than the snug embrace of consumerism, where we find a peculiar warmth, as if cocooned in a comforter spun from the very fibers of advertising's allure.

GlassHalfHopeful ,
@GlassHalfHopeful@lemmy.ca avatar

I honestly find this incredible, but yeah... I know people who enjoy being advertised to... and who like "shopping" even though they start out with nothing in mind. Advertising works on them and probably those spam emails I can't believe people click, which only perpetuates the problem. And apparently it's worth billions to keep up the commercialization.

😭😭😭

GlassHalfHopeful ,

But will they learn...

GlassHalfHopeful ,
@GlassHalfHopeful@lemmy.ca avatar

My hope is that companies would learn from the brain drain side effects in the long run. You're absolutely right that greater profit is what drives this and it was intentional, but it is short-sighted.

The company I work for just terminated a substantial percentage of its workforce. It was done without truly understanding the effect on many programs. I'm now standing on a desert island, alone, trying to figure out how to continue satisfying a customer with nearly all the knowledge and talent to best do that stripped away. Doing the job of three people was hard enough before. Now I'm doing the job of X people, a variable I can't even adequately quantify now. And a lot of that work is so wildly outside of my sphere of knowledge.

Decisions that these large companies are making are causing side effects that they may not feel for many years, but they will... And it won't matter because those executives have accomplished everything they wanted for themselves in those first moments.

Don't be evil.
Heh.

I really do hope a few of these companies learn. I'd love for people to not be treated as expendable assets that can be ground into dust, but as people to nourish and develop. I'd love to cheer for them. I'd love to contribute to their work.

I've no skin in the game related to this device or software. I simply don't care. However, in terms of an AI assistant, I am curious if there is anything on the market, including this APK device, that is worth using. For someone who is privacy centric, advert avoidant, and security focused... does (or even can) such an app/tool exist?

GlassHalfHopeful ,
@GlassHalfHopeful@lemmy.ca avatar

What are a couple of the best self hosted options? I wouldn't mind giving it a go on my server. I may not have enough juice with what I currently run, but perhaps as a proof of concept first and then new hardware later.

GlassHalfHopeful ,
@GlassHalfHopeful@lemmy.ca avatar

So you are using OpenAI's app? Do you have it integrated into your phone? What are the main features that you use (beyond asking questions like one does from their app/site)?

GlassHalfHopeful ,
@GlassHalfHopeful@lemmy.ca avatar

huggingface! i found it once and never could remember again who hosted all those models. thank you!

i use a different device than homelab, but now I am curious what I may be able to achieve with my syno system. it's hw weak, so probably not a lot. but i would like to give it a go. if it's decent, i may consider another device for the purpose.

@GlassHalfHopeful@lemmy.ca avatar

Thank you for all this! Much appreciated!

Incredible resource! Thanks much. I'm looking forward to playing a bit and seeing how far I can push the hardware I currently have.

I logged on to my father's computer today to fix a few things for him and was immediately overwhelmed with all the Windows bloat. This includes copilot and... so... much... more... 😖

GlassHalfHopeful ,

So weird that so much is integrated into a web browser.

GlassHalfHopeful ,

I've been using LibreOffice for a number of years without issue. Literally takes care of all my word processing and spreadsheet needs. I don't miss MS Office at all, which I use daily at work.

Company computing assets are managed. One normally doesn't get to override IT policy without business justification.

Google will start showing AI-powered search results to users who didn't opt in (www.engadget.com)

If you're in the US, you might see a new shaded section at the top of your Google Search results with a summary answering your inquiry, along with links for more information. That section, generated by Google's generative AI technology, used to appear only if you've opted into the Search Generative Experience(SGE) in the Search...

...the engine is borderline unusable without uBlock Origin.

Chris, would you elaborate more on this experience?

Update: Who's Chris? Curse you, speech to text.

GlassHalfHopeful ,
@GlassHalfHopeful@lemmy.ca avatar

This is exactly my case. Ads on apps as well. I completely forget that people have to see all that constantly.

I wonder how much real estate that sponsored content takes. Then again, not enough to visit google and turn off UBO.

GlassHalfHopeful ,
@GlassHalfHopeful@lemmy.ca avatar

😁 Me too. This was rare for me. FUTO with offline STT has been such a boon. I'm glad to be away from google's gboard.

Inevitable, but sad none the less.

Crossing my fingers for the engineering and science teams.

GlassHalfHopeful ,

Perhaps we use search engines for different purposes... 🤔

I don't use Google, but I definitely use my preferred search engine numerous times daily.

GlassHalfHopeful ,
@GlassHalfHopeful@lemmy.ca avatar

Sucks, but makes sense.

I'm surprised they even attempted to use that domain. The instance still exists and will need to be routed through a new domain. Which, again sucks, because any reference links will be broken now... which... again... has me wondering why they even went with that domain in the first place. Albeit, it was a clever use of a top level. I wonder how many others are doing the same.

🤷🏽‍♂️

GlassHalfHopeful , (edited )
@GlassHalfHopeful@lemmy.ca avatar

Yeah, this is most probably true.

Honestly though, I don't even know what most of the generic domains are that were created. It's still deeply ingrained in me that any serious website should be using .com, .net, or .org. But... the amount of domains that were purchased just for the purpose of resale at an astronomical value has made so many of those unreachable.

There are some dot-coms that I have wanted for years which have been sitting stagnantly for more than two decades. I'd love to buy them, but there's no way I'd pay the asking price. At least generic TLDs break that stalemate for a lot of folks.

GlassHalfHopeful ,
@GlassHalfHopeful@lemmy.ca avatar

I was afraid of that. If this is common enough, i think it's something the devs can introduce a feature for which would propagate such a change. Doubt it's high on the totem of things to do, though.

GlassHalfHopeful ,
@GlassHalfHopeful@lemmy.ca avatar

💜

GlassHalfHopeful ,
@GlassHalfHopeful@lemmy.ca avatar

It's certainly become normalized. And it was good to open up the TLDs for various purposes. 😊

This.

We each have an account. Login to the web interface. Choose the desired book. Click send. The epub is emailed to our Kindle.

Running calibre-web off a docker instance. Library is on my NAS.

I use the Window client to add books, handle conversions, and manage things since I have specialized plugins. You can read via the web app as well, but I prefer my ancient Paperwhite.

I vaguely remember what you're referring to and being pretty frustrated about it. I can't remember exactly what changed regarding clicking an emailed link. I simply don't experience that any longer. Either Amazon stopped or I changed some setting somewhere that I'm not recalling off hand... 😬

Currently, I have calibre-web (and the windows client) set to use my email's SMTP credentials. I then set the "sender" to an Amazon approved email. In my case, the email isn't actually real. I just use a forwarder.

Make sure you add that sender email to the Amazon personal document approved email list.

The most recent bump I've had with Amazon is that they no longer accept mobi files. It's no big deal though since they accept epubs without an issue.
