I am very typical earthling. I like earth food and earth drink and earth sports and earth media. Im all about earth things because I am so typical and earthling. so typical as to be very boring and not worth investigating or looking into because I am definately from earth.

The ugly truth behind ChatGPT: AI is guzzling resources at planet-eating rates (www.theguardian.com)

Despite its name, the infrastructure used by the “cloud” accounts for more global greenhouse emissions than commercial flights. In 2018, for instance, the 5bn YouTube hits for the viral song Despacito used the same amount of energy it would take to heat 40,000 US homes annually....

HubertManne ,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

thing is that few if any use cases for blockchain were found and any actual useful things would not require much energy. The high energy crypto itself does nothing useful over more efficient alternatives and I don't know what you mean by fizzle out but it still uses massive amounts of energy. the language models unfortunately do things that are useful and is much more likely to keep drawing power.

@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

corrosion

HubertManne ,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

oh yeah. in the end you have a system that creates artificial value by requiring the sacrifice of real value. heres one credit for burning a barrel of oil. oh now you have to burn 2 to get a credit, now its 4, now its 8.

HubertManne ,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

yeah. funny thing is there is like gridcoin which is perfectly fine because it uses the energy for useful work but they don't like it because it does not have the pyramid scheme artifical value increase. Its value by and large stays in line with energy prices (although if you look historically there is this hilarious spike when idiots were grabbing at everything crypto. it pretty much shows the point in time where cypto became a buzzword thing)

HubertManne ,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

I don't even get it honestly.

HubertManne ,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

there are a few l33t moves like voting in primaries and local elections and judicial. It does not make it great but every little bit counts. Its sucks. Your not voting on if you are sodomized or not but if there is going to be lube or not. Not voting means no lube.

HubertManne ,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

It reminds me a lot (the voting situation) with articles on how people don't like obamacare. Yeah people are not wild about it but they really don't like the situation before it. Its half a loaf and I don't want to go back to no loaf but yes indeed I would like a universal health care full loaf.

HubertManne ,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

I have seen something like this a lot. Many more that work fine but but they certainly don't seem to be at the five 9's or two nines or maybe even one nine. maybe one nine.

HubertManne , (edited )
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

yes as dhork mentions its related to a concept of 6sigma which is an airline/telephony thing about things that must not fail. My little quip is suggesting they work like 90% of the time which is not great.

HubertManne ,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

unless 40% is caocoa content of the chips.

HubertManne ,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

I heard that if you search for lemon party 69 and click on I feel lucky that it will disable all google trackers forever.

HubertManne ,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

I wish there was a seperate block as spam that would auto report. Some things I block due to lack of interest but others spam and our current report takes more clicks than I like. Then I would also like to be able to subscribe to peoples spam block list. If I like the cut of someones hib I might just subscribe to block any spam they block.

HubertManne ,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

yeah usually less than an hour to a few hours old. occasionally they make it to days.

HubertManne ,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

I think this would be great to limit this. I really don't understand people wanting to comment right away. I just lurked for like a month to get a feel before I decided to participate.

HubertManne ,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

I agree here. Filling out an application would have easily kept me out. Many may see that as a good thing though :)

HubertManne ,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

yeah I want as much power pushed down to the individual as possible. I was even thinking you just sorta have recommended mods. like by default you are subscribed to their block lists for the community but if you subscribe you have an option to see unmoderated or such.

HubertManne ,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

I bet you will make one a day sooner if you know you won't be able to post for day.

HubertManne ,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

to subscribe and get a curated list of what you want to look at. I can't imagine lurking without subscriptions to what im interested in.

I built fences all around this town but do they call me dogsnest the fence builder. no. I built the town dock but do they call me dogsnest the dock builder. no. I built the town bridge but do they call me dogsnest the bridge builder. no,

HubertManne ,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

unfortunately no .......

HubertManne ,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

oh hey. great to see a comeback from the late 90's

HubertManne ,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

This is annoying as we buy everything under my wifes account and we hook up mine with family sharing.

HubertManne ,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

No. I realize its an option but its sorta creepy to me. Its like opening the other persons mail.

HubertManne ,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

oh I do hope they have improved it. When we started with steam the game borrowing was pretty great but now she can't be online when I borrow a game which is just dumb.

HubertManne ,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

yeah that sorta still stinks. so my wife and I can't help each other in elden ring but still. half a loag is better than none.

HubertManne ,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

I definitely had no clue about decentralized social media 15 years ago.

HubertManne ,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

I have literally never seen this but jack in the box is not a thing near me so likely pretty different area. All the same its easy to see why. One thing I have mentioned in inflation talks is how much the cheapest most base things have went up and soda is one of my poster children. Can still get 99 cents but only as a super loss leader which before was like 69 cents. buck 25 or buck 50 is still basic loss leader. 2 for five is a basic sale and they are 3 bucks not on sale. So it definitely doubled. Previously the cups cost more than the soda but I think that is changing.

HubertManne ,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

man you guys live in some gross areas. im not sure a kid could even reach the nozle in places near me. They tend to be somewhere between 4 or 5 feet off the ground and a kid has to hold the bottom of the cup and use the top of the cup to extend his reach to activate the lever. now messy pop residue all over the counter. that is common.

HubertManne ,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

did not realize that myself.

HubertManne ,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

if done right thin is fine, but thick is better. We have a place where double is the standard burger and its made to order but fast because you can cook them fast. That being said the place with the thick jucy burgers has a line out the door constantly while they are open.

HubertManne ,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

Honestly I would not recognize the name if it were not for a guy I knew who she was his dream girls (for some reason there is a type of guy who has one model, actress, etc that they are just obssesed with. The obsession is not huge but you will know how much they like X. I guess sometimes its a band or athlete and can be male now that I think of it)

HubertManne ,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

I loved macs back when it was more maximalist design and its service was beyond reproach. anyone buying a pc might be installing linux on it. not that many vendors specific to linux.

HubertManne ,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

Im talking about the time when mac enthusiasts would brag about how many more ports a macbook had over a windows laptop. I use the term just because when they went minimalist design coincided when the apple store started acutally said they would not deal with something which was the cable losing their casing which did end up being a design issue so they handled it later but previous to that they would never not do something unless it was obvious you took a hammer to it or something. my last mac was the macbook pro erra with the dvd-i port.

Coming to terms with no longer having privacy and control over my technology

I miss the days of VHS and DVD shelfs in homes, for example. If you bought the tapes and had them in your home, no corporate entity could alter those tapes without your consent, monitor how many times you watch them, sell your data to whomever they please without your knowledge, roll out new mandatory conditions to a 'user...

HubertManne ,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

I have shelves of dvds but I am getting rid of them.

HubertManne ,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

nope. in most cases streaming works well enough but we do have many on a hard drive from the included itunes.

HubertManne ,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

well as I said we do have some on hard drive but streaming is more convenient and by and large been fine.

The Biden Lies the Liberal Media Want You to Forget (www.newsbusters.org)

As the 2024 election approaches, the left-wing corporate media have lost all interest in President Biden’s frequent lies about his life and career. In the past, these journalists have paid brief attention to the one of President’s latest tall tales, but rarely have they ever bothered to revisit them when the moment has...

Meh. I have facebook but don't really use it much. my condo has a page so its like a semi public chat and sometimes have communication with folks. Certainly never use the feed though and I hate checking it every few weeks. I certainly don't want anyone im connected to to think they will get a faster response if they hit me up there. I bet other things besides facebook spreads bs though. I see it with youtube users. I use youtube but I don't really chase my feed.

HubertManne ,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

I worked in a place where the machine room had a network time device that connected to an attena getting gps reading to give time to all the other hosts. Im pretty sure any ntp server a host has configured is only a hop or two away from a device like this.

HubertManne ,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

I mean he was not so incompetent at one point. not sure what year exactly it was but he lost it at some point.

HubertManne ,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

Certainly sometime before that and the purchase of X but at one point with tesla, spaceX, and solar/battery stuff he seemed to be going somewhere. even the boring company. It was around or post hyperloop. I think he needed an excuse for the boring company and then I dunno somehow lost it with it being impractical.

HubertManne ,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

I feel like im always explaining to recruiters what it sounds like the role they sent to me is actually looking for.

HubertManne ,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

Im open to in office. Just add 7.5k to base pay for each day in office provided it located in my relatively affordable location.

HubertManne ,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

something interesting you say. source mage linux. https://sourcemage.org/ its more up to date than it seems. look at the repo.

HubertManne ,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

nope. weathers not that good where I am at.

HubertManne ,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

so much agree. Why do we even allow data brokers? How about something like an entitiy cannot collect information that is not necessary to conduct the business it is in and cannot sell or provide that information to any other entity outside of the one they collected the information from which must be provided free upon request.
