What the hell kind of crap is that writing?

Also, I'm surprised this is even this a thing, I thought he'd abandoned the boring company years ago.

Kbin_space_program ,

Yeah and it unfortunately succeeded, so I'm surprised it is still around.

Kbin_space_program ,

It's a core problem with image generator LLMs. For some fucking reason they seem to have fed them the content from sites that had a lot of porn. Guessing Imgur and Deviantart.

Literally the first time I tried to use MS's image generator, was out with some friends trying a new fried chicken place and we were discussing fake tinder profiles.

So I thought to try it and make a fake image of "woman senuously eating fried chicken".
Content warning, blah blah blah.

Try "Man sensuously eating fried chicken". Works fine.

We were all mystified by that. I went back a few days later to play around. Tried seeing what it didn't like. Tried generating "woman relaxing at park".
Again, content warning. Switch to a man, no problem. Eventually got it to generate with "woman enjoying sunset in a park." Got a very dark image, because it generated a completely nude woman T-posing in the dark.

So, with that in hand I went back and started specifying "fully clothed" for a prompt involving the word "woman". All of a sudden all of the prompts worked. They fed the bot so much porn that it defaulted women to being nude.

Kbin_space_program ,

Yay, does this mean that Google is going to stop saying the masked email address is the sender and hide the true email address?

You know, like MS has done for over 15 years now?

Kbin_space_program ,

It was a work issue about a decade ago. Client wanted certain emails from automation to be masked as coming from him.

Most email boxes, including Gmail, didn't have an issue. Outlook(the one that shipped with Office) laughed at it and displayed the original sender in giant bold letters.

Kbin_space_program ,

No. The rehab is free.
Province is even putting people up in apartments.

Only rule is: no drugs in the apartment and you enroll in a free rehab program. 80% are turning it down willingly.

Kbin_space_program ,

Please don't create straw man arguments.

I never said cold turkey or abstinence. I said "no drug use in the free apartment."

Kbin_space_program ,

Fyi: is a joke, they're foam.

Also, this crossing needs a dedicated light that ties into the nearby traffic light.

Kbin_space_program ,

Fun fact time: in the 18th and 19th century Britain, postal service was fast enough to have Charles's reply back the same day, with enough time for Edward to make up some fun British insult and write it down and send it off.

Kbin_space_program ,

Will increasing the model actually help? Right now we're dealing with LLMs that literally have the entire internet as a model. It is difficult to increase that.

Making a better way to process said model would be a much more substantive achievement. So that when particular details are needed it's not just random chance that it gets it right.

Kbin_space_program ,

It's an exaggeration, but its not far off given that Google literally has all of the web parsed at least once a day.

Reddit just sold off AI harvesting rights on all of its content to Google.

The problem is no longer model size. The problem is interpretation.

You can ask almost everyone on earth a simple deterministic math problem and you'll get the right answer almost all of the time because they understand the principles behind it.

Until you can show deterministic understanding in AI, you have a glorified chat bot.

Kbin_space_program ,

You're building beautiful straw men. They're lies, but great job.

I said originally that we need to improve the interpretation of the model by AI, not just have even bigger models that will invariably have the same flaw as they do now.

Deterministic reliability is the end goal of that.

Google will start showing AI-powered search results to users who didn't opt in (www.engadget.com)

If you're in the US, you might see a new shaded section at the top of your Google Search results with a summary answering your inquiry, along with links for more information. That section, generated by Google's generative AI technology, used to appear only if you've opted into the Search Generative Experience(SGE) in the Search...

Kbin_space_program , (edited )

Is amusing that bing moved their AI results to the bottom of the page.

Kbin_space_program ,

EMT is a noble calling. It's far from a "broken dream"

Kbin_space_program ,

Nah its Google acting. The EU only cares when it is alone or particularly MS.

Kbin_space_program ,

If we don't give them the chance in the first place, then we won't lose anything.

Why are you so eager to make a deal with a known evil?

Kbin_space_program ,

Theoretically, that might be their plan.
They could get their service federating, and then sell instances to potential admins who cant afford the hardware to deal with a threads spammed fediverse. They could rent out fediverse virtual servers on their physical servers just like Salesforce does(or now, AWS, servers, just like Salesforce does.)

Not a lawyer(Am a dev though). That might get them out of the legal responsibility to moderate content since it might fall to the instance admin to organize that.

Then they can have a twitter and reddit competitor that requires no content policing on their part. And they control the hardware and servers behind the scenes, so they get to insert ads and scrape all of the data.

Threads is automatically hiding comments that mention Pixelfed (mastodon.social)

For anyone wondering if Threads and Facebook at large will be a fine neighbor in the space and compatible with other apps/services in the fediverse: they’re already automatically hiding comments that mention Pixelfed https://mastodon.social/@dansup/112126250737482807

Kbin_space_program ,

But surely meta has good intentions and we should totally trust them guys!!1!

Kbin_space_program ,

Seriously, they were blocking mention of competition (pixelfed) on threads before they launched their first attempt at federation.

Kbin_space_program ,

This started as a joke on Reddit, making fun of landlords.

Kbin_space_program , (edited )

He made considerably more than 30 billion that year. That number based on the 1/3rd the working class pays.
Taxes on the rich should go back to to 70% they used to be.

There were rich people back then, just like now.

Kbin_space_program ,

Oh I absolutely agree.

I only recalled at the time that it was at one point 70%, couldn't be arsed to research further at the time for a mere online comment.

Kbin_space_program ,

If you've been using the same OS and computer since Firefox's initial release.

You need a new computer.

Kbin_space_program ,

Hell, for 3k you could hire someone to haul a tent out to you. Maybe even air drop the damn thing to you.
The self-assembling tent I used to use was only $50.

Kbin_space_program ,

watches as the EU does nothing to rein in Google for worse abuse than MS ever tried.

Kbin_space_program ,

No, but you're not trying to sell your abilities to write things. The entire point of OpenAI as a company is to sell its LLM.

Kbin_space_program ,

You can absolutely do that with a text to speech app and the app Tasker on Android.

Reddit: 'We Are in the Early Stages of Monetizing Our User Base' (www.404media.co)

Reddit said in a filing to the Securities and Exchange Commission that its users’ posts are “a valuable source of conversation data and knowledge” that has been and will continue to be an important mechanism for training AI and large language models. The filing also states that the company believes “we are in the early...

Kbin_space_program ,

Reddit is dumb enough that they probably have a backup they kept of EU users.

Kbin_space_program ,

More rough than "can it". Pretty sure the closer translation would be Shut Up.

I agree with it.

Kbin_space_program , (edited )

He said gueule, not bouche. It's the rougher of the two terms.

Kbin_space_program ,

Yes, absolutely, its definitely the nicer way of saying it.

Kbin_space_program ,

It's updated RFID tags that are even harder to detect, and unlike the standard ones, require specialized technology to activate, so they get security through obscurity.

It has nothing to do with NFCs. Likely has a lot to do with the police state ID cards and vehicle tracking that the Bush Administation tried to implement in the late 2000s.

I am genuinely horrified to see how much data google collected from me

I created a google takeout and in that zip file I found some files containing a ton of data about me. It has logged every single page I visited while using the google search engine and chrome browser. It even logged every single time I opened an app on my old android phone. It even has VOICE RECORDINGS of me and a log of every...

Kbin_space_program ,

You do realize that Google is far worse than Apple and Microsoft combined right?

Kbin_space_program ,

As a percentage of population, so did Julius Caesar.

The reality is that Google is entirely dependent on ads and selling your data.

Apple and Microsoft, it's just a happy side gig they can do.

Apple makes its money selling mediocre hardware and software for a premium markup.
Microsoft makes money selling Windows, Office(+Teams) and Azure to business users then from video games, then ad revenue.

Kbin_space_program ,

Yup. It's a slow process for me, but honestly the fediverse is proving a great resource for that.

Kbin_space_program ,

Oh I got your point, but I also reject it. Google is objectively making the internet worse.

There isn't any reasonable comparison to Apple or MS outside of they're all too big and too unregulated.

Kbin_space_program ,

Because it was infected with malware from hostile countries.

Kbin_space_program , (edited )

Not just late stage capitalism(which is really just a return to oligarchies)

You want to know how this is all being pushed: look into the "International Democrat Union"

It's led by the christian-fascist and former Canadian prime Minister Stephen Harper. He's giving them the aid and policy directives they're using to trick people into voting for them.

It's why Pierre Polievre, current leader of the federal opposition in Canada, wants to talk about anything other than India's assault on Canadian sovereignty. Because Modi, him and Harper are really tightly knit.

Kbin_space_program ,

Nah, Harper and his Reform party spend two decades worming their way into Canadian politics by at first showing their hand in the late 1980s and early 1990s, then learning to hide it and play it slowly. Any time any of their cult played their hand in the 2000s it was always an "outburst" or "temporary error in judgement".

They then conned the existing sane conservative party into "merging" with their their smaller party, and through cheating the internal politics of the combined party and pandering to the GOP, got the funds to crush the sane conservatives at the federal level.

It has nothing to do with social programs. Has everything to do with a decades long plan to push politics rightward into accepting extremism.

Kbin_space_program ,

Not Trudeau, hes rightly bringing up India attacking Canada. Poilievre, the leader of the official opposition, is the one trying to bury it.

Also its very well documented that Modi takes advice from Harper, and Poilievre being a former member of Harper's cabinet, absolutely worships the ground the robot-man walks on.

Kbin_space_program ,

My Opa survived the dust bowl.

He had a story of being through a locust swarm that ate the (cotton) clothes he was wearing.

Then he survived WW2 landing at Sicily(first wave) through the Italian and Netherlands campaigns.

Kbin_space_program ,

That was during the great depression and the "dust bowl" in Manitoba. Based on the dates in the wiki, he wasn't alive when they went extinct.

Kbin_space_program ,

The point of journalism is to get the facts across and inform viewers. I don't care about the journalist other than them being impartial and reporting on the facts.

Kbin_space_program ,

That's different. Video game journalism isn't factual news, it is reviews, which are inherently opinion pieces. I expect to get personal elements there. Not to mention the unique role of games putting the players in the seat of telling the story.

To paraphrase Sir Patrick Stewart:
Video games are a unique entertainment medium because the person playing them creates the story.
In a book, the author writes the story and it comes to life in your head.
In a movie or show, ultimately it's the director and editor who get to tell the story, the actors doing what they're told.
In a play or music, the actors/musicians on stage tell the story.
In a video game, the player creates the story.

He was only talking about video games, but the same applies to the modern ttrpgs and more complex board games like "the captain is dead" or "tokaido"

Kbin_space_program ,

Yeah there is.
Fox news isn't it.

Also I didn't ever say "factual news"

Kbin_space_program ,

Because Firefox has better XSS detection than Chrome and will block adware sites from injecting tracking that Chrome completely allows.

Kbin_space_program ,

In my experience of using the traffic inspection tool fiddler: for https sites you have to have it add its own self signed cert to be able to see traffic.

Firefox, out of the box, detects it immediately and warns you of a security issue, not letting you do anything.

Chrome, and chromium based browsers,
don't even notice it and happily let you do what needs to be done.

I've had the experience of a few sites not working recently in Firefox, one of them explicitly stated an ad server was blocked because of xss settings and refused to load. Chrome didn't care.
