Many years ago, we had a troubled employee leave work very mad. He was quite furious with his computer and went home for his revolver unbeknownst to us. He came back to work with it and unloaded all six rounds into the system. Each round went through the case and each one missed the drive/motherboard/videocard. So, the system was still working despite the abrupt extra cooling holes. This further incensed him and he went away even madder, but this time in cuffs.

Curious as to why you were banned as I enjoy your comic. We were just talking about your comic and the Garfield - Garfield strip in the FarSide sub yesterday.

That said, yesterday I coincidentally deleted my other account on lemmy.ml as I don’t really like the vibe there. Maybe that vibe had something to do with your ban. Looking forward to seeing more of your work still.

Scream, “Do you know who I am???”

60% of the time, it works every time.

Can we all agree that whatever version of predictive text we have nowadays is crap, and has been for a long time?

I'm sick of random capitalisations mid sentence. I'm sick of common words being replaced by less common ones or even downright nonsense. I'm sick of it taking three attempts to successfully get the word I want. I swear it's been like this for five years or more. Can we have a better version yet, or at least the old one back?

KnightontheSun ,

I’ve finally had to disabled it. Been a few weeks and while typing is more of an effort on my part, it is also much less frustrating.

The predictive text was far and away the most annoying part.

KnightontheSun ,

I’ve turned off the predictive typing, but still have the basic old style spelling correction enabled. So much nicer. Yes, it’s like moving back ten years, but I am no longer excessively frustrated from typing on my phone. And it was excessive.

KnightontheSun ,

Yes. The Great American Streetcar Scandal.

They were never really punished for this and I think this was a lesson learned by all that corps could do what they want without fear of repercussions.

KnightontheSun ,

Most places I’ve seen this referenced it is called a “credit freeze”, but good advice nonetheless.

Google will start showing AI-powered search results to users who didn't opt in (www.engadget.com)

If you're in the US, you might see a new shaded section at the top of your Google Search results with a summary answering your inquiry, along with links for more information. That section, generated by Google's generative AI technology, used to appear only if you've opted into the Search Generative Experience(SGE) in the Search...

Startpage is what I use at the moment and it’s been fine. Am trying to decouple from the googs too.

How to Figure Out What Your Car Knows About You (and Opt Out of Sharing When You Can) (www.eff.org)

Cars collect a lot of our personal data, and car companies disclose a lot of that data to third parties. It’s often unclear what’s being collected, and what's being shared and with whom. A recent New York Times article highlighted how data is shared by G.M. with insurance companies, sometimes without clear knowledge from the...

KnightontheSun ,

Yes. Telemetry boxes. Most cars have had them for almost twenty years. The cell connection is more modern.

Telemetric insurance is a thing now.

Or "iced dessert". <25% milkfat is the line, I think.

KnightontheSun ,

They break the styrofoam down right there and make new material. I am not sure if they do everything on premise, but you can see it happening right there with some of it.

Fanfiction Community Rocked By Etsy Sellers Turning Their Work Into Bound Books (www.404media.co)

Etsy sellers are turning free fanfiction into printed and bound physical books, and listing them for sale on online marketplaces for more than $100 per book. It’s a problem that’s rattling the authors of those fanfics, as well as their fans and readers....

Rule of Acquisition 67: Enough is never enough

I don’t know. They stay out too late, get way too drunk and make a terrible racket when they get home.

KnightontheSun ,

Why was six afraid of seven?

Because seven was a registered six offender.

KnightontheSun ,

My HA system sh!t the bed last year and I've been too consumed by other projects to get back to it, but seeing your post makes me want to raise the priority back up and get to it. So, thanks for that!

Passenger sees Boeing 757-200 “wing coming apart” mid-air — United flight from San Francisco to Boston makes emergency landing in Denver (www.cbsnews.com)

Passenger sees Boeing 757-200 “wing coming apart” mid-air — United flight from San Francisco to Boston makes emergency landing in Denver::A United Airlines flight to Boston was diverted to Denver because of an issue with the plane's wing.

KnightontheSun ,

It was simply changed to, “If it’s Boeing, I’m not going.”

KnightontheSun ,

I could play it poorly quite well thank you very much!!

Question of recommended home camera system

A friends mother that I used to rent a room from asked me to help her set up an outside home security system with motion sensors so she could watch the neighborhood cats cat around in her yard. I thought I'd screenshotted a previous Lemmy thread that had a perfect recommendation, nope. Can't find it....

I use both Blue Iris and Arlo. They both have pros and cons. I am using the free Arlo storage (two weeks, I think). My Blue Iris setup is local only atm and their software is quite good. I use a W10 VM to host it. I tried using a Synology, but it pounds the disks constantly so I found the VM better suited.

KnightontheSun ,

They were olde by the time I got to administer them and they were failing every so often. They were a pain to work with as I recall, but again no lost data. They would beep with no issues sometimes. One thing that wasn’t their fault was a previous admin had set them up in threes with all but one disk in a raid5 array. They were wondering why performance was crap and one array would just drop every week like clockwork.

Took a while, but I mirrored (VVM) the data off on spare 3500s set up properly. They ran okay then. It was just ancient storage. Glad to work on netapps now. So much smoother and sophisticated storage compared to the olden days. lol

KnightontheSun ,

Why?

KnightontheSun ,

Gotcha, thanks for the reply. That's for straight up EVs, right? They do make a couple hybrids? Those are still going to be offered? Sorry if you aren't the right Toyota spokesperson to ask! ;-P

KnightontheSun ,

Or use a Water Pick. I switch it up every other day and use floss in between.

Some dentists don't like floss as it can sometimes drive those bits further down.

KnightontheSun ,

It is an appliance so perhaps your setup makes it more difficult to use. I leave it near the sink and just use it with my slobbering mouth over the sink. No more time or effort than flossing for me.

I will say the thing is louder than it should be. Like a damn motor boat when turned up to high.

KnightontheSun ,

May I ask what you are using for a blocker?

KnightontheSun ,

Can you please expound on this?

I gave up on Amazon last year. I do without many things which is fine, but there are some things that are more difficult to find without them. I am still doing without as I'd like to figure it out for the long term.

Can you give examples of the vendors that supplant Amazon for you?

KnightontheSun ,

Why don’t you come over, Friend?

We’d like to have you for dinner…!

KnightontheSun ,

The man was very rigid with how he felt his wife’s chicken should be prepared.

His whole story is interesting. He did not start his chicken endeavors until his late 50’s after an already quite colorful life.

There is a documentary on youtube somewhere and it’s worth seeing.

KnightontheSun ,

In Elon’s eyes he’s still testing on animals.

KnightontheSun ,

No. I won’t go back there. I am biding my time here waiting for more to come. It’ll happen eventually.
