LesserAbe , to Technology in Waymo issued a recall after two robotaxis crashed into the same pickup truck

Here's an article saying that based on data so far, waymo is safer than human drivers. If you have other information on the subject I'd be interested to read it.

My point asking about personal car incidents is that each of those, like your car tap, show we can make mistakes, and they didn't merit a news story. There is a level of error we accept right now, and it comes from humans instead of computers.

It's appropriate that there are stories about waymo, because it's new and needs to be scrutinized and proven. Still it would benefit us to read these stories with a critical mind, not to reflexively think "one accident, that means they're totally unsafe!" At the same time, not accepting at face value information from companies who have a vested interest in portraying the technology as safe.

LesserAbe , to Technology in Bluesky and Mastodon users are having a fight that could shape the next generation of social media

I don't understand getting mad about the bridge since it's already possible for any random person to read your public posts on mastodon. The difference is this developer is public about his work. There are probably already private projects that are scraping/indexing mastodon.

Yeah, I get some people prefer that format, but I'm going to skip any article that's just a link to a recording.

I didn't read it as them saying "therefore this isn't a problem," it was an explanation for why it happened. Think about human explanations for accidents: "they pulled out in front of me" "they stopped abruptly". Those don't make it ok that an accident happened either.

You're right there should be a minimum safety threshold before tech is deployed. Waymo has had pretty extensive testing (unlike say, Tesla). As I understand it their safety record is pretty good.

How many accidents have you had in your life? I've been responsible for a couple rear ends and I collided with a guard rail (no one ever injured). Ideally we want incidents per mile driven to be lower for these driverless cars than when people drive. Waymos have driven a lot of miles (and millions more in a virtual environment) and supposedly their number is better than human driving, but the question is if they've driven enough and in enough varied situations to really be an accurate stat.

Lol I appreciate your enthusiasm for the USA but grass is always greener.

LesserAbe , to linuxmemes in ditch discord!

One downside that slack shares with discord is it's not searchable/visible to the greater web

Oops all frosting

Why can't these people get their fucking act together? Each box is only like 60% correctly frosted wheat nugs

LesserAbe , to Technology in Google Bard is dead, long live Google Gemini

I'm not being sarcastic. It's definitely something people usually think about when naming a product.

LesserAbe , to Technology in Google Bard is dead, long live Google Gemini

Did they say somewhere they were going to add that as a voice command? Right now you trigger Google by saying "ok Google".

My understanding is you want a name that's recognizable, searchable, and as short as possible given those constraints. If we attach Google to "Google Bard" that seems like it fits the bill. No one really talks about bards conversationally. "Gemini" already had a notable space program association, plus astrological sign. Someone like Google can probably overcome those existing associations, but why choose a word that's longer and less distinct?

I do get annoyed saying chatgpt over and over (same with LLM) so I don't view that as a favorable comparison.

LesserAbe , to Technology in Google Bard is dead, long live Google Gemini

I don't think Bard is necessarily a great name for this product, but going from one syllable to three seems ill advised.

LesserAbe , to Technology in Ethiopia set to become first country to ban internal combustion cars

Thanks for the insight.

LesserAbe , to Memes in Blockchain: the wave of the future

The more people who use proof of stake blockchains the more power it will require, same as the more people who visit CNN.com or the more people who turn on a light bulb, but it's not nearly as much as proof of work.

The difference between proof of work and proof of stake is that the first one in order to function requires showing that someone did a bunch of processing on their computer. By attaching a financial cost (literally expending energy) to mining new coins, PoW helps avoid someone fraudulently taking over the network and issuing as many new coins as they want.

Proof of stake works by people who already hold coins putting some of them up as a kind of collateral, so it's nowhere near as processing intensive.
