Maeve ,

Ohh, this is why all the layoffs! Their going to import employees and pay exploit them. Greedy, greedy M$.

Maeve ,

Yes. While there's nothing wrong with sex work, if you're forced into it to survive when you'd rather not (marriage or cohabitation because it's either that or sex someone to get a low or higher paying job) it's still forced prostitution, and once Mr. Nice Guy has you, it's mask off, 100. Even if you willingly choose Mr. Nice Guy, and the mask comes off, it's a bait and switch, rather than duress and still scummy.

To put it another way, if your choices are die from dehydration or drink poisoned water, dehydration may be less agonizing than drinking from a brackish source.

Maeve ,

Hrc won the popular vote. How did voting harm reduction then do anyone any good?

Maeve ,

I'm saying hrc votes were worthless; throw away votes. Hence a non vote was the same, and a third party vote was at least as valuable, and when enough people support a third party candidate, it will be worth more, because it shows the two major parties they have something to worry about.

Maeve ,

Dems have made it abundantly clear they are willing to move further right than a centimeter to the left. Also my American compatriots see socially left and assume economically left when that's just not the case. Socially left is great, until everyone is homeless, hungry and sick, equally.

Maeve ,

This is a great point. I've said you're either human rights or rights for me and mine, not thee and thine." If you're pro black but not pro women, pro women but not pro lgbtqia, etc.

Maeve ,

You act like Bernie wasn't ignored anyway. Please.

Maeve ,

Right, because the dnc totally didn't ignore Bernie Sanders, or Dennis Kucinich. Again, please.

Maeve ,

Arranged marriages are still a thing. My Indian friend was quite happily a bachelor at 23 until his parents presented him with a choice of three brides or be disinherited and kicked out if the family business and family home compound. He traveled to India to meet his choices and returned married. I'm not sure either of them are happy, but they are parents. That's got to be good for their child, right?

Maeve ,

Cognitive dissonance is uncomfortable. I'm still struggling through plenty of it, with no clear answers. I acknowledge it, and also acknowledge at this late age, my imaginative abilities have atrophied, significantly. :-/

Maeve ,

I was talking about the dnc ignoring him. I wrote him in.

Maeve ,

Swoon

Maeve ,

I agree with the sentiment and also wonder if she's still ferociously pro-copyright?

Maeve ,

Oh wow, I had no idea. Thank you for telling me.

Maeve ,

This was amazingly delightful! Thank you op, for the guffaw!

Maeve ,

And also all our monkey cousins died. :(

Maeve ,

Not too be confused with copyleft and wtfpl.

"The executives and Board are short on caviar and fois* gois. We can't have that when some of those... people still have homes or cars, and can do without more actual meals."

*Flies groi is strictly for us commoners.

Also, I typed it correct twice and twice autocorrect hard failed as I hit send or between send and posting. So AI that consumes too many resources also stinks.

Maeve ,

Even though these people are more that to anyone, including society at large, Capital Hill and the feds themselves, they leave them alone, still thinking they are in control of these groups: compare and contrast how they are treated and then how BLM, antifa, and college students protesting genocide are treated.

Maeve ,

"Go toward" but never actually get there.

Maeve ,

Farming is hard, physically and mentally, especially organic. And necessary. This is wholesome.

Court upholds New York law that says ISPs must offer $15 broadband (arstechnica.com)

Trade groups claimed the state law is preempted by former Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai's repeal of net neutrality rules. Pai's repeal placed ISPs under the more forgiving Title I regulatory framework instead of the common-carrier framework in Title II of the Communications Act....

Maeve ,

There's still a very stacked and extremely corrupt scotus.

Maeve ,

A heavily regulated capitalist country, for sure.

Maeve ,

Happier in general, healthier, threat of extinction farther away. The greedy wouldn't be happier, and it would require a better educated, more vigilant populace without the illusion they too, could some day become part of the leopard class. We'd need better auditing of books, public and private. Fines that were actually punitive, with the certainty of incarceration (more humanely), as well as public record of wrong and correcting measures, and certain nationalization of businesses caught in malfeasance a second time. I think essential goods and services should be nationalized anyway, but that's an unpopular opinion on my instance.

Maeve ,

You can disable copilot, but it's complicated.

Maeve ,

Trollies?

Maeve ,

Well GM and Goodyear lobbied against public transit when they wanted everyone to buy a car, and probably still do , is why public transit is so awful.

Maeve ,

That's right.

Maeve ,

That seems like a bandaid for a tourniquet problem. We need to address causes, otherwise unlicensed, uninsured drivers will increase.

Maeve ,

I think we could find viable ways to engineer something workable without completely tearing everything down, we just have to work smarter. And get rich people to pay taxes.

How do you propose policing all the drivers without license and insurance? We are already way overpoliced, with horrific results. How would you propose bad drivers get to work and do necessary living activities? I think we need to look for inclusive, compassionate solutions, rather than more punitive, exclusionary solutions.

As TikTok ban threatens stability in social media ecosystem, some brands settle into the fediverse (digiday.com)

The possibility of a TikTok ban is inching closer to becoming a reality at this point. On Tuesday, the Senate passed the bill that would bar the social media platform from operating in the U.S. unless ByteDance, its Chinese parent company, sells its stake....

Maeve ,

Yes. Here comes the enshittification.

Nurses Protest 'Deeply Troubling' Use of AI in Hospitals (www.404media.co)

“Life-and-death decisions relating to patient acuity, treatment decisions, and staffing levels cannot be made without the assessment skills and critical thinking of registered nurses,” the union wrote in the post. “For example, tell-tale signs of a patient’s condition, such as the smell of a patient’s breath and their...

I've worked in health care off and on, in some* capacity, for a long time. I know LPNs who are more knowledgeable than plenty of doctors. As I got older, it dawned on me that it's really the individual. If one is in it as "just a job" they tend to think that degree makes them know it all, which means diddly, without empathy and compassion.

Maeve ,

I've known some damned fine RN that stayed with hospice services or ED, for the need of empathy and compassion. That said, I prefer a FNPor PA to a MD. I've also known some nasty RNs who were just in it for the check, and they made patients and every other employee miserable, on their shifts.

Maeve ,

Sure, but this is the same company that lobbied Nixon to institute HMO rather than public health care.

Maeve ,

Wow, there is so much good info on how the buddy holds mental distress. You've never heard of that?

Because only women are worried about becoming step-parents? (This prolly could've been an Ask Lemmy.) (lemmy.world)

I'm looking for some good reading on how to, eventually, best help be a step parent to my partner's children and NEARLY ALL books are geared toward the woman's perspective as though men don't want to be a strong teacher and develop these kids into healthy adults. Ugh!...

Maeve ,

But Being a good parent has nothing to do with biology

That part.

Maeve ,

A long time ago, someone from a not free country wrote a white paper on why we should care about privacy, because written words can be edited to level false accusations (charges) with false evidence. This chills me to the bone.
