Melkath ,

Cool.

Do it with Murdoch owned news outlets.

Melkath ,

Take away kids ability to communicate with family and law enforcement when they get shot up.

Genius idea.

Melkath , (edited )

What phone doesn't have internet anymore?

Edit: Wait, I get it. So now kids have their at home phone AND their parents also pay for their "you're at school so this is how you get us your last words in the event of a shooting" phone.

Again, genius.

Parents needing to pay MORE money they don't have and kids have ANOTHER reminder of how their job is basically to obey AND very possibly be killed while obeying.

So much better of a solution instead of MOTHER FUCKING GUN CONTROL.

Melkath ,

If you wanna get all brutal and how it is in America about it, I am thinking more about giving the kids a chance to say good bye than actually getting help.

We have established that noone who could actually do something about it cares about all of the kids getting murdered in America schools.

Edit: And remember. While Uvalde cops sat outside and wet their pampers, a mother overpowered them to get children evacuated. A mother who was... notified by their child with a cell phone... and later faced criminal charges for it.

Melkath ,

Took the words out of my mouth.

Melkath ,

The off chance?

The mother fucking off chance?

You know what an off chance was? Columbine.

200+ years of American history, one bona fide school shooting.

There are so many school shootings happening in America that news outlets just stopped reporting them.

You, sir, can fuck right the hell off.

Request to be exempt from being chastised denied.

Melkath ,

"The dead kids are just one offs! But I asked to not be called out on that."

Thanks for nothing.

Best Buy Membership "discount" (lemmy.world)

So I was shopping with my wife today and I said "oh let's see if my membership helps out." So we went and added the same item to each of our carts, and to our surprise, the total was the same! So what is it exactly that I'm paying for in this membership if the items "original price" is higher for me than it is for regular...

Melkath , (edited )

Ya.

I worked there when they launched a membership thing, and it was points to gift cards that got printed on receipt paper in hopes the barcode on the carbon paper would fade before you tried to scan it, not any actual price reduction.

Kind of like how there was all that fine print in the 200 dollar service plan that made it sound like you got more, but it was always just the manufacturer warantee, so if your device qualified for manufacturer warentee, geek squad would give you the cheap out fix, and get the preemo replacements and put them into stock. If the manufacturer warantee didn't cover it, you were fucked.

Melkath ,

Yup.

I was in the computer sales department.

We were flat out told what the lies were, and how to make them more convincing.

The service contracts were non-refundable, so it didn't matter.

When a manager caught me helping a retiree get a cheap setup to email her grandkids instead of getting them on a line of credit for a top of the line gaming pc, they didn't even fire me. They just stopped scheduling me hours and told me to keep coming in to get my schedule.

Picked up a blank schedule for 5 weeks before I stopped going in and I'm sure they filed no call no show paperwork when I didn't show up for my 1 hour 3 weeks later.

Fuck best buy.

Melkath ,

Yup.

I was 17, I was about to graduate high school so it was part time. I was the most reliable department associate, but one of the "weaker" salesmen.

The department was spotless when I was there and the phone always got answered, and I made sure to bag 3 or 4 big sales a week, but I wasn't out to bleed every poor soul who walked into the department dry. I was more about good service and finding the right solution for each person.

So I got an average of 32 hours a week, well over all the other people in the department, but I was definitely on my way out, and that raging hemorrhoid of a waste of air reaming me out over helping an 80 year old woman who literally showed me her social security check, but assured me she had friends she could get to invite her over for dinner if the computer was too expensive pushed me out.

Its not even like if they fired me I would have gotten unemployment. It was just a petty move from a coward with a micro-peen who couldn't handle a 17 year old telling them they were a 45 year old failure at life working in a Best Buy for just over minimum wage taking advantage of nice elderly ladies.

Melkath ,

My first breaking point was the millionth time I was in the printer aisle before open on a Saturday with a manager laying into me for a half hour about how to "squeeze the last of the juice" out of people, and they dropped the "tell them you are an un-comissioned salesperson so you have no reason to take advantage of them, it disarms them, makes them trust you, you can load anything into their cart after you make them believe that" and I had a moment of clarity, and instead of going "Uh huh. Yes sir" I thought "No. I am an un-comissioned salesperson so I have no reason to take advantage of them. End of sentence."

Genuinely, Best Buy is one of the worst companies on planet earth.

Melkath ,

My memory is I checked with no intention to actually file, first job lost and all, and Arizona + part time = no unemployment.

Gotta be over 40 a week to qualify.

Melkath ,

100% US Military doing it.

Melkath ,

I didn't know know you could see who voted on kbin.

I just knew lemmy, mbin, and some others don't get counted, so the troll down boats don't matter.

Melkath ,

The irony of claiming burden of proof on a post about proof being suppressed.

My hunch is the billions of dollars we have recently siphoned into a cyber warfare branch of the military, Project 2025, which is advancing almost identically to how The Plan for the New American Century progressed 20 years ago, and a President who is in bed with a war criminal fugitive. Oh, and they also recently started one of the largest censorship campaigns in decades Ala "STOP FREELY SHARING INFORMATION ON TIK TOK! WE ARE SUPPOSED TO FILTER RAW INFORMATION OUT AND PROPAGANDA IN VIA MAJOR NEWS NETWORKS AND ISP THROTTLES THAT WE CONTROL!!@!@"

The 100% part was hyperbole, but America is the one doing everything in it's power to spark WWIII, and the one that benefits most from scrubbing recent history.

Melkath ,

Found the Blue MAGA.

Melkath ,

So you are confirming that, you sir, are the outsider trying to influence American politics... by accusing other people of being outsiders influencing American politics.

Sounds very Blue MAGA.

Melkath ,

Illegal? Yes.

Stops businesses from doing this kind of BS? No.

Also, is this a legit thing posted at a legit workplace? Probably not.

Melkath ,

"Tankie" is a lightning rod to show you are a paranoid shill who loves Biden's genocide.

It also feels unbalanced when it isn't followed with a "Russian bot" comment, like it is 80% of the time.

"I know the president I fervently support did it, but its TRUMPS FAULT! HE USED THE TANKIES AND RUSSIAN BOTS TO DO IT!"

Melkath ,

Are you speaking to Blue MAGA or people with critical thinking skills and morals?

Melkath , (edited )

It is already showing really great potential.

Then the news drops that all of the progress we made on global warming has been undone by the energy usage caused by AI.

So sure, AI will live up the hype, and we will still die a slow and agonizing death of heat and suffocation.

But at least we will have AI friend chat bots to comfort us through the end.

Melkath ,

I'd say the masses dying of starvation and exposure would reduce global warming, but the millions of cars will be replaced by hundreds of private jets that net greater emissions.

The poor factory workers will be more destitute, and the rich will always find a way fill that void. Fuck, they will force their pilot to fly the empty jet around the world just to make sure that conditions on earth dont improve and they eventually get to utilize their vault 3 miles underground before they die.

Melkath , (edited )

CO2 doesn't only come from fossil fuels. It comes from combustion in general.

We can go nuclear, but look at how Russia has ruined its entire country trying to do that (if you are not aware of how severe the radiation problem in all of Russia, not just Chernobyl, has become, there are tons of youtubers that do documentary style content, Plainly Difficult is one of my favorites).

Solar, wind, hydro can do it, but the amount of CO2 produced by manufacturing the generators is still massive. Its just producing the CO2 upstream in the process instead of during the actual power generation. It would take so many solar panels and windmills to replace burning coal that producing them would still release an amount of greenhouse gasses that rivals just burning the coal.

I don't disagree that we can make try moves to mitigate the damage, but giant red flags went out about Crypto mining. The power draw from AI is far surpassing that, and AI has hardly even started to spin up yet.

I hope for the day we figure out how to produce unlimited energy without destroying the atmosphere in the process, but its Newton's Third Law. Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. Each "solution" comes with its drawbacks, but our thirst for electricity only ever grows.

The answer would be to make AI draw less power, not to create more power in different ways.

There is no way we are going to get CEOs to scale back their AI power draw when it gives them the ability to scan everyone's face and spy on them in a comprehensive, existential way. They are already using it on Anti-Zionist protesters. They are never going to give that kind of power up, but that kind of power requires an insane amount of... power.

Melkath ,

Where do you think rebar comes from?

Melkath ,

My company ordered back to office, and as I was told, I was the only one to say no.

I generate too much value and have tolerated being underpayed enough that they can't justify firing me.

I'm also not some MIT AI machine learning savant. I come from a business analyst/ QA background, and I have made a SQL/Java/VBA system for virtually free that does the work of a team of 10 every day, but it's just my underpaid ass running it.

When I lose this job, honestly, I'm fucked and it will be a nightmare because I'll probably need to go into an office, and I'm in no shape for that.

But for today, I said no and I keep doing my job.

Melkath ,

That's been the tactic.

Baby steps.

Melkath ,

Absolutely.

I dont share my anecdote for the first time.

I have heard in equal parts that I have a rare privilege and also that privilege will not last forever.

I challenge both takes a little, but mostly accept both as true.

Melkath ,

Invokes the moment Pikachu spoke perfect English to ash.

Melkath ,

Amen brother.

All the way through I have been saying "we need to hold Biden's heels to the fire, not be sending the message that his fascist tactics are working."

"BuT tRuMp!!!"

Now Trump wins because liberals are disenfranchised and what's worse, I predict that will only drive the DNC deeper into fascism.

They rigged Bernie out, and doubled down on the fascism then.

This cycle, there isnt even a viable candidate that they are suppressing, and they are tripling down on the fascism.

Biden has already lost, and Progressives are more likely to team up with him (Edit: By him, I meant Trump, not Biden. They have become the same Party with a little bit but not much disagreement over abortion) than to resist him.

America really is fucked right now...

Melkath ,

They "lost" 4 billion dollars like the Pentagon "lost" 12 billion dollars in Iraq?

I guarantee you that Meta has become the biggest Top Secret spying agency for the US government.

All that money got "lost" into straight up spying programs.

Melkath ,

So the NSA, FBI and CIA are thanking China for assisting in their efforts, right?

Melkath ,

As long as you ensure a US based entity is spying on you with it, and not a China based entity, then no.

Melkath ,

Because the world has long since surpassed far beyond 1984 levels of spying on unsuspecting innocent civilians.

Melkath ,

Not to mention all of the slave labor from all of their incarcerated immigrants, and I'm sure the US will get a tax write off or something when they finally seceded.

Melkath ,

Brings to mind the black mirror episode with the dude who made his living doing a tour on a stationary bike generating electricity and watching ads, but ending up squandering the proceeds on avatars to entertain him and on a girl he was crushing on who was fast tracked to hardcore porn as a result of his financing.

Melkath ,

This.

Melkath ,

The AI was just RNG applied to a census.

Melkath ,

You can pay one person 5k for 40 years, or you can use a machine that cost 200k upfront that breaks down in 10 years.

Which one are the capitalists going to choose?

Melkath ,

Rams through major bribery to kill TikTok and try to force a sell to Facebook.

Immediately sets up a Threads account.

Tik Tak Toe.

Melkath ,

With what?

Facebook has been death rattling for the better part of a decade.

The metaverse failed.

Oh shit... the Oculus.

Cheaper means higher volume means spy-ie-er.

So that's how they could afford that NEARLY UNANIMOUS bill.

To be fair, I have a vive and it is just as much of a data breach.

Melkath ,

I have been informed my SSN, DOB, and payment information have been "compromised" at least 50 times in my life.

Melkath ,

To collaborate more effectively with the NSA and CIA.

Former Twitter executives sue Elon Musk for more than $128 million in severance (www.npr.org)

Twitter's former CEO Parag Agrawal, Chief Financial Officer Ned Segal, Chief Legal Counsel Vijaya Gadde and General Counsel Sean Edgett claim in the lawsuit filed Monday that they were fired without a reason on the day in 2022 that Musk completed his acquisition of Twitter, which he later rebranded X....

Melkath ,

How many people did they fire without severance?

They're just butt-hurt that the severance that they built into the company for themselves and not for others was not afforded to them.

A bigger fish came along and gave them a taste of their own medicine.

Fuck 'em.

(Unless someone else comes along and proves to me that everyone fired from twitter by Elon or these 4 got 32 million dollars in severance each.)

Melkath , (edited )

They absolutely refuse to close out about half of their POs, they just leave them in final fulfilled status, but never close them. Makes it a nightmare to try and maintain a clean "Open PO" data feed.

Spent a year trying to get them to just close the POs. Got run around half the world. No results.

They also have this habit of getting people to accept orders directly through email via excel spreadsheets instead of submitting proper POs.

This leads to different segments of the company flying blind and constantly clashing with eachother when trying to set global demand drives.

They also use Ariba as their vendor portal, which if you have ever tried to do a deep dive into ANID number relationship management, you know that Ariba requires extensive collaboration on both Vendor and Client side to keep the framework from becoming a knotted mess.

They don't have any particularly present Ariba collaboration.

All in all, in my current position, I have dealt with ASML and many of their competitors. LAM is by far the nicest to work with. ASML has been one of the most frustrating to work with while getting the least accomplished.

Melkath ,

Purchase Order. I work in Supply Chain.

A client forecasts a needed item number, then they submit a Purchase Order, a Sales Order is made for the Purchase Order, A Work Order is made for the Sales Order, the item number is manufactured, the Work Order is closed, the item number is delivered to the client, the Sales Order is closed, an invoice is generated, the invoice is paid, the PO gets closed. Unless you're ASML, in which case, there is a d12 roll to decide if its gets closed or if you just leave it there forever.
