McDonald’s Gives Up On ‘AI’ After Comedy Of Errors, Including Putting Bacon On Ice Cream (www.techdirt.com)

LLMs certainly hold potential, but as we’ve seen time and time again in tech over the last fifteen years, the hype and greed of unethical pitchmen has gotten way out ahead of the actual locomotive. A lot of people in “tech” are interested in money, not tech. And they’re increasingly making decisions based on how to drum...

I think we are about to experience a true Butlerian Jihad. Not because of the fearsome power of AI, but because of the hatred of shitty LLMs.

Muffi ,

Great! Now I know who to contact when I accidentally delete all the plaintext API keys and passwords I had stored in a public github repo.

Oh boy, Lemmy really doesn't get sarcasm without the "/s", huh?

Even Apple finally admits that 8GB RAM isn't enough (www.xda-developers.com)

There were a number of exciting announcements from Apple at WWDC 2024, from macOS Sequoia to Apple Intelligence. However, a subtle addition to Xcode 16 — the development environment for Apple platforms, like iOS and macOS — is a feature called Predictive Code Completion. Unfortunately, if you bought into Apple's claim that...

Every time I compare specs to prices on Apples website, I get irrationally angry.

He should be paid double for the amount of work he puts into those ads

'LLM-free' is the new '100% organic' - Creators Are Fighting AI Anxiety With an ‘LLM-Free’ Movement (www.theatlantic.com)

As soon as Apple announced its plans to inject generative AI into the iPhone, it was as good as official: The technology is now all but unavoidable. Large language models will soon lurk on most of the world’s smartphones, generating images and text in messaging and email apps. AI has already colonized web search, appearing in...

I don't think this about trying to close it, but rather put a big fat sticker on everything that comes out of the box, so consumers can actually make informed decisions.

Switched to Tidal when Spotify announced their reduction in artist pay, and I can highly recommend it. The interface is much better, although lacking podcasts (but luckily there are many great FOSS podcasts apps out there).

Muffi ,

I liked having both in the same app until I discovered AntennaPod, which is far superior to Spotify's podcast manager.

Muffi ,

I use KDE connect for remote controlling, so I never even noticed. But I can see that being an annoying loss.

Muffi ,

I really hope they start shipping to Denmark soon. We're such a tiny market we often get ignored or forgotten.

Muffi ,

Combine the two and we've got a proper Matrix situation on our hands

Muffi ,

Private companies should not be able to do whatever the fuck they like. They have a very important responsibility, and they will not consider ethics over profit, unless we as a society force them to.

Muffi ,

The way the presenters had to talk over the voice to interrupt it was awkward as hell. It also seemed to pick up on background noise from the audience often and interrupt itself. That makes it unusable in loud public settings (which imo is great, I hope it will never be socially acceptable to chat loudly with your AI in public).

Muffi ,

I think you're 100% correct in assuming they've already fed it data scraped from SO. I've previously gotten code samples from ChatGPT that was clearly from SO down to the comments in the code. Even reverse searched some of the code and found the question it was from.

Muffi ,

I've made a couple of games in Godot over the last year, and watched this video yesterday. It's a really, really good intro to the software. So much covered in just an hour, with a good balance between doing things the easy way, and doing things the correct way. That's often a hard balance to achieve in gamedev/programming tutorials.

Muffi ,

This is true, but remember that this time there is data showing a significant rise in mental health issues among children and teenagers. That didn't happen with TV, music or books.

It is too easy to blame the mental health decline on smartphones and social media though. We should look at the bigger underlying structural problems that are squeezing joy, dreams and hope for the future from our youngest.

Muffi ,

The worst thing about this in my opinion, is that this is mostly a problem for the children from less resourceful families. There is already a tendency for children from lower socioeconomic households to have more problems with concentration. Adding smartphones will only exacerbate the problem and fuel the fires of growing inequality.

Switching to Pop!_OS on a system running a 3090 gave me a significant performance increase. This comes as no surprise.

    Muffi ,

Same. I've got too many awesome projects that I enjoy working on. Sleep is boring.

Been happily off discord ever since the CEO's disastrous, anti-encryption speech at the "Protecting Children Online" hearing. Evil little dude, that guy is.

Adobe is the fucking worst. That immediately killed my hype.

Public transport IS fun! Much easier to masturbate on the train than while driving a car

    Muffi ,

I live in Copenhagen and only own a bike. The amount of cars and their size has risen drastically the last 10 years, it sucks. Almost nowhere in the city is actually car-free, but there are bike paths almost everywhere which is nice.

    Muffi ,

Maybe he wanted something that could actually run?

    Muffi ,

Have they added podcast support to Tidal yet?

    Muffi ,

I just tried to delete my inactive NordVPN account from a European IP (not through a VPN, I actually live there). Spent 10 minutes searching for a delete option without luck. The only way seems to be by submitting a form (which for some reason also requires "payment info"). Sketchy as fuck.

Women STEM students up to twice as likely as non-STEM students to have experienced sexism (www.hepi.ac.uk)

We know that women students and staff remain underrepresented in Higher Education STEM disciplines. Even in subjects where equivalent numbers of men and women participate, however, many women are still disadvantaged by everyday sexism. Our recent research found that women who study STEM subjects at undergraduate level in England...

    Muffi ,

I studied at the Technical University of Denmark and there was so much sexism towards the women there. I was oblivious to it the first year, and then got into a friend group of primarily women. It was mind-blowing hearing their stories, and of the way that university management and leaders shut them down every time they formally brought up the issue. There was (and still is) serious cover-ups of multiple rape cases.

Don't think it's not happening just because you don't hear about it. People in power are actively trying to keep this quiet, and it's working.

    Muffi ,

Scroll through the trained models on civit.ai and you'll quickly get a feeling of the dystopian level of "prettifying" everything in the AI-generation world.

I also once searched for "brown" just to see if any models were trained to create non-white-skinned people, and got shocked when the result was filled with models trained on Millie Bobby Brown from Stranger Things. I don't even want to know what those models are used for.

Before leaving Reddit, I frequently saw what was clearly LLM bots having "conversations" in the comments. Shit's just starting to get weird.

    Muffi ,

For the past 8 years I have had to disable 'mouse acceleration' after every Windows update. The updates have become more frequent, and the setting to disable acceleration has slowly become buried deeper in the menus. Switched to Linux two days ago and I'm never looking back.

    Muffi ,

Still motherfucking micro-HDMI, god damn it! I hate my RPi 4 and end up using my 3 more because of it. I'd much rather have a single HDMI (or DisplayPort) output, instead of two micro-HDMI.
