Affordable Android Excellence: Best Smartphones Under $200 in 2024 (www.gizchina.com)

While flagship smartphones boast impressive features, spending $1,000 is not a prerequisite for a satisfying Android experience nowadays. If you’re in need of a new smartphone and have a budget of approximately $200, there are numerous excellent options available. Surprisingly, some of the best Android phones under $200 come...

Pantherina ,

And then how long do you get any updates?

Pantherina ,

Idk, I bought a used Pixel and use it with GrapheneOS. 150/200€ often, if you repair it yourself its cheaper.

LineageOS is just the tip of the iceberg. There are many components that will likely not get any updates

Pantherina ,

LineageOS is a project making AOSP (Android Open Source Project) usable. This means bundling it together, combining it with the right drivers and kernel for specific phones.

They also maintain many of the AOSP apps (gallery, phone etc) and modernize them, which is awesome as Google abandoned them.

LineageOS is not security focused and often less secure than stock Android. It has no Google Apps by default, which means a lot of proprietary Apps that rely on the backends will not work, at all.

There is the option to install "NIK Gapps" or other names, which is just a bundle of all Google Apps, installed as System apps, just as horrible as stock Android is.

There also is microG, which is also a system app and is not Opensource, as it downloads official Google Binaries.

Every System app can read critical device identifiers that you cannot change, and can access all files, as it doesnt need permissions.

LineageOS is a usable Android, often more up to date than what came with the device, but those Devices never have full support for Custom Operating Systems, like relockable Bootloader or full security features. So in the end you have more updates but partly less security, more privacy or none.

Also the Updates that LineageOS can even supply are very minor. Android devices use the Linux kernel but a special version tailored to that SOC (System on a chip). They would need to make a custom Kernel just for that phone, often newer, as manifacturers of those cheap phones have nonexistent Update lifespans.

They dont do that as its a lot of (unpaid) work.

Then there is firmware which is only delivered by manifacturers and signed with their private keys. No custom OS can do that and firmware security holes are very important and a lot.

So LineageOS is a really nice project if you donate to them but still save money. Abusing their hard work to buy cheap devices and get their longer OS support for free is not cool.

And in the end it is incomplete, insecure and nothing to build upon when buying a new device.

Btw, a ROM is only a small part of the firmware that you cannot change. No custom OS is a ROM.

Pantherina ,

It has evolved a lot since then

Pantherina ,

Pressure and sound waves.

Its more obvious than you think

Pantherina ,

IP over Avian Carrier

Pantherina ,

Only on mobile, and hidden opt-in

Better drop that BS platform

Pantherina ,

Jesus was a twin but "God" just mutated his X Chromosome through "god rays" and merged the cells together.

And now guess how the twin was called.

Pantherina ,
  • extremely slow updates
  • incomplete updates as component lifespan is shorter than advertized

Yeah, its about what comes in the Future

Pantherina ,

Not all components included will get security updates for as long as their OS will.

Agree that instant updates are not essential for many people, but you dont need 0days to abuse publicly disclosed vulnerabilities.

Pantherina ,

I actually bought an USB stick that repeatedly fails to boot any Linux Distro. Have to test that one.

A RULE SPY'S IN THE BASE?! (lemmy.blahaj.zone)

I searched up "Lemmy" on the PlayStore and noticed that Reddit appears right before the last lemmy client in that search X3 do u guys know if there r any other lemmy clients worth trying? I randomly felt like trying all I could find and for now I'll stay on Jerboa and the Web UI but I use Voyager too now, mainly for DMs...

Pantherina ,

Please use fdroid, search for apps there, copy the source URL and use it with obtainium

Pantherina ,

Jerboah is also very recently updated.

Btw fdroid just builds the apps. It is often better to use the APKs from the release pages of github etc. so that you only need to trust the devs. It is also way better for security as FDroid uses the same signing key for every single app.

Obtainium works okay for that, you enter the URL and it finds a lot of sources. It is completely overcomplicated though.

Pantherina ,

F-droid is a service. They get submissions for building apps, some people gather the needed stuff and the app is build on their servers.

Meanwhile app developers 90% of the time build their apps themselves, with their own signing key.

The F-Droid app is outdated, use "F-droid basic" as weird as that sounds. That is build against modern libraries.

But I use that app now only for searching for apps. You can add repos and you get new apps shown easily, then I open the app page and down under "source code" with a long press I copy the source code.

That you can enter in obtainium and it downloads the official release of the Dev instead. Turn off everything automatic update/download in F-Droid.

You can get every app through obtainum, also from external repos, but there you need the app ID and the repo URL which is hell of a pain, I use F-Droid basic here too.

Obtainium is not ready at all, especially as it has no feed for the repos. But it works.

Pantherina ,

What app? F-Droid basic has the best UI of all I think, just the search button is kinda random.

Obtainium is okay but overcomplex without a reason, its core has a lot of potential though and with a feed and one-click installs it would be really good.

Pantherina ,

Basic has the same UI but modern hidden stuff

Pantherina ,

Nobody reads the source code of those apps. Thats basically an audit, and it may happen sometimes, but it is not a requirement for F-Droid.

They do some general tests, but the "antifeatures" are either by the officially stated permissions or by opt-in in the F-Droid submission. Creators/packagers often state the reason for the antifeature in the README, which means they are the person placing the tag, or know the process.

Google Play has sometimes good, sometimes bad requirements too. Those APKs are signed by developers, but the final product also by Google afaik, its some mix.

You need to trust the devs anyways, thats the point.

Pantherina ,

Why not use KeepassDX? Its better afaik

Pantherina ,

Droidify also has a list of preadded repos you just have to click on, I think I also submitted a list of Links to add. Thats nice and will never end up in the official client.

With the trust model, using Izzyondroid and external repos is best as those are often apps made and signed by original developers. But as its not complete, I use the f-droid store just for search and copy the source URL to obtainium

Pantherina ,

Tested Raccoon and its basically like Jerboah but worse with too big UI, missing features and bugs.

Jerboah forever! Its the most stable Lemmy client and also full featured.

Pantherina ,

Tried Eternity, was a blessing for Reddit but I dont think I need it for Lemmy

Pantherina ,

Aah, the security again...

Fuck this company

Pantherina ,

K9mail, Keepass, (Kamera and Kontakte in German)

And all of those

https://flathub.org/apps/search?q=K

Pantherina ,

Dude there is a big "Disable" button just press it.

No idea what that is, but if its a system app you cant safely uninstall it (may risk breaking OTA updates)

Pantherina ,

Thats scary wtf?

If you are on a Pixel, switch to GrapheneOS.

Pantherina ,

That app has no uninstall button so its a system app. "Wiping the phone" will restore its default state and the system is always untouched

Pantherina ,

Mull, Librewolf, Mullvad Browser, Arkenfox user.js

Its basically privacy.resistfingerprinting, a generalized useragent, maybe blocked javascript or ads.

Pantherina ,
  • how to use apparmor or selinux
  • how to run docker rootless
  • use a reverse proxy like traefik or nginx
  • use certbot or another way to get TLS certificates
  • use a firewall, use secure ssh
  • block spam traffic and matrix servers that host spam
  • host synapse and sliding sync
Pantherina ,

I mean you want to host an internet facing computer. That shit is poorly pretty complicated. But I think there are things that make that easier with presets etc.

I heard of people that Nix is awesome because there are preconfigured configurations, you apply them and also with your single config file you have the documentation of what you did.

https://search.nixos.org/packages?channel=23.11&from=0&size=50&sort=relevance&type=packages&query=synapse

Pantherina ,

I dont get any of those "encrypted mail" services.

You need an app with good PGP support.

  • generation / import when logging in
  • share with every message
  • autoimport sent keys
  • encrypt messages if you have a key
  • sign every message
  • display a checkmark if message is signed

I have no idea what an "encrypted mail" provider is supposed to do differently. Either you use E2EE or you have to trust some random people.

Pantherina ,

Yes nobody cares and that is bad. But I have no idea how "encrypted providers" want to change that.

Pantherina ,

Vendor lockin basically. Protonmail is doing something really bad in my eyes, in that they force you to use their app. That bridge works too, okay

Pantherina ,

Thanks for the clarification!

Pantherina OP ,

I agree the word "backdoor" is used too often

Pantherina ,

This dudes reference is literally a capitalist giant bullshit product with completely imaginary prices.

Like, McDumb raising random prices is no clear indication of inflation. Rice, noodles and stuff are

  • Pantherina ,

I am very concerned about over 200 people thinking "well, that is relateable"

    People, whats wrong with you??

    Pantherina ,

And in the background is a really weirdly edited banner too.

    Pantherina ,

Damn didnt know it was that bad.

They also lack any documentation about how to use their policies on Linux (where you can disable all the bloat). But it should be doable, I will give it another try.

Is the browser even FOSS? Can you compile a working version yourself?

I do that with Firefox and it is really cool.
