The last car I bought is a 2014 model year. The one before that is a 2016. I'm not buying anything made after 2020, even if I have to squeeze gasoline from the rocks with my bare hands. Not because I don't like electric, but because I don't want a spy appliance to drive around in, even if it has emoji headlights.

This is why nerds who don't like literature class are missing out. If you can figure out the meaning of some inscrutable poem most documentation should be a breeze.

He could have posted something about how the universe doesn't fit our preconceived ideas and how this day is an example of that and that this means you should dig deeper to get to the truth because it's usually a lot more complex than what it seems.

But no, Neil woke up and chose dumbassery

What in the fuck has Reddit developed in the last year that cost half a billion fucking dollars?

I’ve been in dozens of quarterly review calls for every company I’ve worked for where EBIDTA is mentioned and this is the first time someone explained it clearly.

Thanks!

I used to work in the adtech industry so allow me to translate:

Metrixlab buys data from harvesters and uses some algorithm to tell companies where to put product placements. I don't know why they mention e-commerce because Amazon killed that industry.

Harris Interactive makes ad content. All that shit about "consumer intelligence" and "simplifies intricate decision-making" is about using ads to get people to make emotional rather than rational decisions.

GutCheck is probably behind a lot of astroturfing of brands on websites. That's why they're bringing brands "closer to authentic, contextualized human experiences."

KuRunData is sifting through all WeChat data to gather information about companies.

Semi-Hemi-Demigod ,
@Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social avatar

They are utterly mundane. The dirty secret of the ad tech industry is that while they're collecting all kinds of data, targeting ads has never been shown to be more effective than just making a good ad. Conversion rates are terrible unless they use extremely creepy amounts of targeting that would immediately get them investigated.

Why talk to people when you can talk to AI?

One of the reasons I'm in the tech industry is I prefer talking to computers. They don't even need to be intelligent.

The filing also states that the company believes “we are in the early...

I've been to a datacenter that had part of Wikipedia in it in Dulles, VA. It's definitely not a basement, it's one of the coolest places I've ever been.

The company I worked for was decommissioning a server rack and they needed some warm bodies to unhook cables, so they let some non-sysadmins go in to help out. Security was super tight, but once you got in there it was a nerd's wet dream: Whiteboards everywhere, weird foreign snacks and energy drinks, dim lighting with sick red neon trim.

I also got to keep all the Ethernet cables I wanted which was pretty sweet.

Plus all of those subscription transactions have individual costs. 3% just to the credit card companies alone. We either need to actually make low-cost microtransactions an actual thing - no Bitcoin is not that thing - or we need to publicly subsidize artists for the sake of art.

They should lose their business license for this. Back when I was a wet-behind-the-ears web developer building apps on the production server I knew not to do something like this.

It's not hate. It's confusion. I have no earthly idea why I'd want my toothbrush to connect to anything.

Semi-Hemi-Demigod ,
@Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social avatar

Maybe the name is the problem. "Internet of Things" implies that "things" are connected to the "internet."

I could definitely see the utility of a toothbrush with a three-axis accelerometer that tracks its orientation to make sure I'm getting all of the surfaces of my teeth. But you can do that with Bluetooth, not wifi, and I don't know why the app needs access to my phone book and a monthly subscription.

If these things were built on open standards it might be better.

I just got a manual for the first time in a while and I forgot how great driving at 45 mph in 2nd gear to warm up your car is.

Semi-Hemi-Demigod ,
@Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social avatar

That's too messy and requires a tool. Just push on it from the inside with your feet. It might even come out in one piece so you can put it back.

(Don't do this except in emergencies.)

Semi-Hemi-Demigod ,
@Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social avatar

Or at the very least you can put it in "L" which will keep it in a lower gear longer, which burns more fuel but warms the car up faster.

Though I'd only do this on really cold days because it's incredibly inefficient.

Semi-Hemi-Demigod ,
@Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social avatar

I know that driving a car will get it up to operating temperature faster, but whether it's more efficient to let it idle for 10 minutes or to drive in a lower gear could be a toss-up.

This is why we need the MythBusters to get federal funding so they test these things.

You can be investigated for neglect if you let your kids walk alone.

It happened in Maryland.

Semi-Hemi-Demigod ,

Imagine having to leave your house to go to work.

My commute consists of walking down the stairs into my office. Takes about a minute unless there's a cat, in which case I'll be stuck for a few minutes giving him pets and letting him know he is a good kitty.

Semi-Hemi-Demigod ,
@Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social avatar

It doesn't really, but I'm sure there are parents who are driving to work anyway, and walking or biking the kids would take even more time than the

So I figured they'd just let the kids walk on their own because it's only a mile and it would save the parents some time. (Plus they don't have to go out in bad weather.) But then I remembered that even that isn't allowed anymore.

Then again, I'm old enough to have been a pedestrian latchkey kid and I'm pretty sure if I did that to my kids at the same age they'd be in the foster system.
