Only color laser printers put those yellow dots on paper. The black and white ones don't because they can't: They don't have yellow toner.

So get a black and white printer and you'll be fine.

[US social psychologist Jonathan Haidt] links the rise of the “phone-based childhood”, continual supervision by adults and the loss of “free play” to spikes in mental illness in young people.

So phones are one out of three of the cited problems, but the only one they're doing anything about. These poor kids are going to have to deal with helicopter parents and no free time with one less form of escape. Something tells me that'll make it worse.

People think mainly of the Hindenberg when you mention airships, but there were a lot of other ones that met tragic ends. The US Navy's Akron and Macon both crashed due to storms, the former with the loss of all but three sailors.

I think the troposphere is just too turbulent for big fragile bubbles like this to work. Maybe if we had blimps like Neil Stephenson's The Diamond Age - where they are made of diamond and use vacuum for lift - they could be strong and small enough to work. But the idea of using something like this to deploy wind turbines is just asking for trouble.

It would be a lot better if Congress could pass a comprehensive privacy bill, but we lack a functioning government so I guess this is the best we can do.

Yeah, if China wants the data of Americans they should buy it from American companies, not harvest it themselves.

They're not mad about leaking data, they're mad that China is drinking their milkshake.

They say on the bottle that it's a blend so I don't think this is that infuriating. Though if I saw "Texas Honey Blend" I'd assume it's cut with crude oil.

I can see it being useful if you’re making candy. Different sugars crystallize differently, so it’s not uncommon to mix corn syrup and sugar to get the right ratio.

But they’re also making “pancake syrup” that is corn syrup dyed and flavored to approximate maple syrup which is a crime against nature.

Semi-Hemi-Demigod ,
@Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social avatar

If it was a bunch of different honeys they would have listed the types on the front of the bottle, I'm sure. The word "Texas" heavily implies that it's made out of something terrible.

Semi-Hemi-Demigod ,
@Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social avatar

Yeah, I was commenting on the notion of mixing honey with corn syrup generally, not this shit.

Though I'm sure there's a bunch of old ladies in Texas who have recipes on old, yellowed card stock that call for this.

If you eat a lot of pasta I would recommend learning some simple sauce recipes. Tomato sauce is probably the cheapest, and it's basically a can of whole tomatoes, half an onion, some garlic, and some herbs. Cream sauces might be cheaper to buy canned, but you can make those with some cream, onions, garlic, and Parmesan cheese.

Other than that it looks like you're making good choices. The system just sucks ass. I hope your next trip is more fruitful.

Manufacturers are driven solely by consumer demand unless regulated

I disagree with you on this. Manufacturers are also driven by what makes them the most money. Affordable compact cars don't make much profit, but big, expensive, cheaply engineered trucks make them a ton of money. Body-on-frame construction, cheap suspensions and drivetrains, and ancient engine designs lower their costs to develop a lot, and they just throw some leather and a touch screen in it and can mark it up 20% or more because now it's a "luxury" truck.

Then there's the advertisements which are designed to influence consumer demand. And the ads for big trucks are targeted squarely at people who want to feel powerful. They put them on every ten minutes during sports programs to prime their market into thinking this is a reasonable vehicle for them to own. When they buy it and realize it's actually not that fast, not that great as a commuter, and costs them a ton in gas they get angry and then drive like dickweeds.

I'm a little sad the new VW van doesn't have a Westfalia trim. Those pop up campers were great: Stove, fridge, sink, table, and it sleeps four. Plus with a tailwind you might hit 55.

Not to mention that the 7,000 pound EV can do 0-60 in waaaay less time than a big truck.

I'm of the opinion that putting small cars way up in the air as CUVs ruins the driving so much it makes people worse drivers.

Or maybe it's just that every CUV I see driving acts like they don't know where they are or what they're doing.

Semi-Hemi-Demigod ,
@Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social avatar

They claim the C stands for "compact" but I like yours better.

Semi-Hemi-Demigod ,
@Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social avatar

I think you're right about that, and I also don't think car designers actually care anymore. I see all kinds of vehicles with huge C pillars - like that Camry you rented - and a lot of them have dented bumpers like they backed into something they couldn't see.

Car companies don't fix the designs, though. They just add more features like BLIS and proximity sensors that beep at you when you're too close to something. This helps, sure, but it also reinforces the idea that drivers don't need to actually look around them.

With our aging population, we'll have even more people who can't physically turn to see what's around them. And because these folks also have trouble getting into and out of cars of normal height, they buy CUVs which have even worse visibility.

Semi-Hemi-Demigod ,
@Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social avatar

Car bumpers are usually able to take a 5-10 mph crash without more than cosmetic damage. But that's only if the bumpers hit each other. The fuckoff huge trucks have their bumpers up where the tailgate is, which will crumple the lid an maybe fuck up your frame which can total a car even in a light impact

    I remember being excited about the "hot hatch styling" of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 until I found out it's actually the size of an SUV.

    Also, it will probably be twice as heavy as my GTI. That will be super great for handling, I'm sure.

    Then again, normal people don't buy those things and the fact that I don't like this will ensure it's a hit

    Semi-Hemi-Demigod ,
    @Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social avatar

    Normal SUVs are so huge one that's the size of a house is considered "compact."

    Semi-Hemi-Demigod ,
    @Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social avatar

    A low CoG helps, for sure. But if the car is twice as heavy everything that holds the car off the road needs to be twice as strong to handle it. And then there's still inertia to deal with, especially when turning or braking.

    And then to get the same amount of performance out of it they need to make it incredibly overpowered, and then sell it to people who have no business driving something that can go 0-60 in four seconds.

    I checked to see if there were any EV sports cars because having handling like that would be amazing, but the ones that aren't hypercars are all just special trims on base model cars.

    I get that, and I thought the same until I started writing documentation myself and found people misinterpreting what I thought were very clear instructions. Every piece of writing has subtext and secondary meaning, even technical docs.

    Even understanding that the person writing the docs didn’t speak English as a first language helps me find clues to fill in the gaps that exist in all documentation. And that’s a skill I first picked up in literature class.

    But that’s just me.
