There would have to be some kind of currently unforseen breakthroughs before something like that would be even remotely possible. In all likelihood, quantum computing would stay in specialized data centers. For the problems quantum would solve, there is really no advantage to having it local anyways.

Microsoft in damage-control mode, says it will prioritize security over AI (arstechnica.com)

Microsoft is pivoting its company culture to make security a top priority, President Brad Smith testified to Congress on Thursday, promising that security will be "more important even than the company’s work on artificial intelligence."...

Tinidril ,

I remember them saying all the same exact things in the early 2000s after a slew of widespread disasters. Security will never be a higher priority than whatever cool new thing they want to sell.

Tinidril ,

The fact that someone's gender makes a difference is part of that "social wound" they mentioned.

Tinidril ,

Aren't society's norms arbitrary? There are certainly societies where showing tits is normal.

Tinidril ,

Where did I advocate for open porn in the workplace? My only point was that it's a sign of societal issues that there would be a gender based difference in how people see the issue. That's not anti-woman, it's just pointing out broader issues.

Tinidril ,

From a US perspective, I see these tactics being used far more extensively by wealthy individuals and corporate interests than I do Chinese interests. Unfortunately, our government and especially our politicians are often directly involved in spreading misinformation and suppressing the truth. We need strategies that function outside of government to close the gaps between reality and public perception.

Tinidril ,

Their interests aren't generally all that aligned, so that helps. It's pretty obvious that the garbage coming out of the cable news networks is at a minimum deeply sympathetic to American corporate interests, if not straight up misinformation.

Tinidril ,

I have a hunch that "working" would not exactly be a top priority.

Tinidril ,

The big oil corporations have been busy buying up all the competing charging networks, so that much tracks.

Please, for the love of God, VOTE! (pawb.social)

I don't like Biden either, but anyone with half a brain knows there are two choices in the 2020 election. If we had a sane voting system, voting third party might be worth it, but as it stands, no one but you knows your favorite candidate exists and unless you want to become their campaign manager that will still be true in...

Tinidril ,

Yeah, appeasement works great with glory hungry dictators. What's hilarious is you guys would be arguing the exact opposite of Trump were in charge right now, making up shit about how soft Biden would be on Putin.

Tinidril ,

Voting for Kennedy on principle. Fuck, that is hilarious. Kennedy is more pro-Israel than even Biden, and he is a complete whack job besides.

Tinidril ,

It's amazing that the vast majority of progressives always come around and vote for the lesser evil, yet we have to listen to this ranting every single time.

You are right that they should be pushing the Democratic establishment to do better, but there is a reason they don't. They know that progressives are willing to make compromises, but the establishment is not.

Biden would choose Trump over a progressive candidate. We know this because he did. When the Democrats moved the first primary to South Carolina from New Hampshire, they probably threw away the NH electoral votes, and they know they will never win SC. They would rather Trump win than face another progressive challenger.

Tinidril ,

As I said, progressives inevitably do end up voting for the shitty neoliberal. Exit Polls have always shown that. Then when the shitty neoliberals lose, they always find a way to blame it on progressives. That's what makes these constant "please just vote" posts especially obnoxious.

The people in these forums are not the people you need to reach. Unlikely voters are unlikely to hang out in political discussions. If you really give a shit, phone bank, canvass, or call your representatives and tell them to quit fucking up so people won't check out of the system.

If you want to virtue signal and play into the neoliberal spin machine, keep doing this. All you are really doing is providing space for all the right wing trolls to try and convince people that not voting is virtuous.

Tinidril ,

Leftists ought to see that Biden is immeasurably better than Trump and act accordingly, but there is no solidarity to be had with the Democratic establishment.

Neoliberalism, just like classical liberalism, is a right wing political philosophy. The left must ally with liberals as necessary, but there is no "pan-leftist solidarity" possible. The establishment has betrayed, is betraying, and will continue to betray any coalition made with the left. If Democrats fought Republicans with half the ferocity with which they fight leftists, this would be a very different country.

Tinidril ,

Just imagine the US goes to war and Elon shuts them off because some foreign leader strokes his (let's say) ego.

Tinidril ,

Communication is kinda important.

Tinidril ,

This is certainly possible from a technical perspective, but it's unlikely that it would happen in reality. Consumer product companies are invariably going to want to outsource ads to a third party, not host them from their own systems. It's also going to be a pretty small percentage of customers that would bother to do this, and they are probably not the ones that are likely to make purchases based on ads anyways.

Tinidril ,

Yes, but what would be the advantage of handling that traffic twice when your already paying someone else to do it?

Tinidril ,

They aren't protecting us from TikTok, they are protecting themselves from us. They put a lot of resources into controlling mass media then got blindsided by social media. Now they have social media mostly under control, but only in this country. They can't risk the next Bernie Sanders giving people hope for a better world.

Tinidril ,

Don't leave out healthcare inflation. It's as bad or worse than housing inflation, but it's easy to forget until you need it.

Tinidril ,

American social media companies are also controlled by foreign powers. I have no interests in common with the ultra wealthy and massive corporations that control this country. They are just as foreign to me as anyone in another country. I trust them less than I trust TikToc.

Tinidril ,

Actually, yes. The only exception would be YouTube, but I don't let the algorithm tell me what to watch. I have a handful of channels I follow, and sometimes look up a howto video.

Tinidril ,

The US is well past the point where radicalization is an unreasonable response. It's radicalization paired with stupidity that's a problem, and that's what we have with the accelerationists and MAGA.

Tinidril ,

Did voting for Biden stop Trump this last election?

Um, yes? It didn't stop Trump from breathing, but it stopped him from being president this term. Even if it somehow eliminated Trump, there is always the next Trump. There is no point where we can stop fighting to preserve past victories, even as we fight for new ones.

How many times are we supposed to vote Democrat against our own interests

None. Voting Democrat is always in your interests. (At least until something major changes) Voting corrupt Democrats out in primaries is even moreso. It would be nice if we lived in a system that can support more than two parties, but we don't.

Will it always be "neoliberalism or fascism" every election

That's why we fight to take over the Democratic party. Every obstacle to defeating Democrats in primaries has a corresponding obstacle to winning a general with a third party candidate. Winning as a third party is both more difficult, and more risky.

You want a shortcut, but there isn't one.

Tinidril ,

Biden isn't pro genocide, at least there is no evidence to say that. The Biden administration has been against the ground invasion from the start.

Biden has made some missteps in my opinion, but America pulling support for Israel was never a real option. Israel does require aid, but Netanyaho doesn't care if that aid comes from the US, or from his buddy Putin. Israel realigning with Russia would put Palestine in an even worse position because it would threaten their support from Iran.

Then, of course, there is the risk of a regional war breaking out of Iran takes the strained relationship between the US and Israel as an opportunity. That could easily pull other countries in and become WW3.

Foreign policy is about more than just virtue signaling. It's outcomes that matter, and what a lot of people are calling for will not get them the outcomes they are looking for.

Not that I'm shaming anyone for pressuring Biden. The positive movement on aid shipments was very likely helped along by the protest votes in Michigan.

Tinidril ,

Israel does a lot of research and innovation for US technologies, including weapons. That would be of great value to Russia. I can't speak as to what weapons the US can and can't lock.

All of this is in a kind of unrealistic realm, because US support for Israel isn't going anywhere.

Tinidril ,

Assuming they get you on video, it would be trivial to crop out the clothes and give the algorithm only your face.

Tinidril ,

Yikes. I know it shouldn't surprise me anymore, but I'm still shocked at how deeply so many people have absorbed this nonsense.

Tinidril ,

My guess? Watching too much CNBC or Fox Business.

Your understanding of regulation only considers freedom on the side of business and not the freedoms of everyone those regulations protect from corporate malfeasance. You don't get that "socialism" includes things like worker cooperatives that should be the ideal of market commerce. Your concept of freedom seems to exclude the concept of positive freedoms. Your idea of capitalism ignores the coersive reality that workers without the means of production live under. I could go on but I'm not sure I could ever stop finding new issues, which is quite amazing.

In short, your comment contains nothing that isn't straight up corporate propaganda from someone with not enough curiosity about the world and privileges that have allowed you to remain ignorant.

Tinidril ,

LOL, that's not anger. At best it's exhaustion, which has become my typical reaction to people taking a dump on a thread and demanding answers to tired old bullshit that's been answered a thousand ways before.

Tinidril ,

You can lead a horse to water, but when his health fails or his business burns down he'll be looking to the big bad government for a handout.

Tinidril ,

A few years ago when I was working from home and on the phone all day, I much preferred my landline. My cell service was decent, but the landline was better. No dropped calls, no static or garbled audio (from my side anyways), and no latency causing me to talk over other callers. I always hated getting on calls when I was remote from my home office.

Tinidril ,

Not that I care what they want, but I think most would prefer to be yeeted.

Tinidril ,

Mainly because the major streaming services wouldn't allow their platforms to run on it.

Tinidril ,

It would seem to be rational that the less mass of metal in a connection, the faster that connection will charge or discharge voltage. Physical sockets require a lot more mass just to ensure solid contact.

Tinidril ,

Not that I support either but, if corporations get free speech, why wouldn't AI?

Tinidril ,

The US does too, but fat chance of that happening.
