Your instance rejects Follow requests from instances not on your 'Allow list', which is a pretty small list.

Edit: the list has since been expanded.

'subscribe to anything' is handy, too. I'm subscribed to this post, for instance, so get notifications of new top-level comments.

I cannot make any post/comment containing the string [slash]etc[slash]passwd on lemmy.world (lemmy.world)

When I try to submit a post or comment containing the string [slash]etc[slash] passwd, the submit button goes into a loading state and spins indefinitely. The request is blocked by Cloudflare with status code 403. I can't even search for the forbidden string. You have to check dev tools to find out what went wrong, this error is...

That's kinda funny, in a way - unsophisticated prevention for an unsophisticated attack.

Everyone trying to use the Internet normally suffers due to this kind of stuff.

It probably is. I'd tried Mastodon but found myself not going back. Phanpy re-invigorated my interest in it.

There was a great windows app called 'dvdshrink' that let you rip commercial DVDs onto blank DVDs (shrinking them if necessary). It got taken down with a Cease & Desist, but the MPAA or whoever didn't worry about who took the domain. For a long time, the site was just filled with ads instead - now it's a bit more sophisticated: no real link to download the software, but lots of genuine-seeming donation requests.

The fake site is at the first search result for that software (edit: it's probably best not to link directly to it)

Decades ago, my school's drug info was similar: every drug had a single entry ('euphoria') in the Pros column and a massive list (ending with death) for the Cons column.

New piefed feature , anyone can subscribe to any post or comment (piefed is a reddit and lemmy alternative) (codeberg.org)

This is a feature that as far as i know lemmy does not have, so it might be worth it to checkout and support piefed, it will probably be useful if there are certain topics that are really relevant to you and you want to develop in depth knowledge of.

The lead dev is Rimu - which isn't on LW's admin list.

Well it's good to see that - unlike Lemmy - Reddit users have found a way to bash Windows without using pre-transition images of Elliot Page. So they've got that going for them, at least. (I'm assuming this post is also poking fun at Reddit, for being riddled with ads)

EDIT: Apologies, I shouldn't have made this comment. I'll leave it up, so the replies have some context.

It was two, fwiw. They were also upvoted, and engaged with (which is what the trolls want, of course). I shouldn't have made that comment - it's a sign that I've been on my phone too much this morning. I'll amend it, and then go out for a walk or something.

Sorry. It's from me being too online. Must. Put. Phone. Down.

Mastodon also has a different outbox format (one that's paginated), so that's the other reason their posts don't show from Lemmy. Solving the problem of following users with fake communities has also been proposed (by me, and also here), but it's generally a bad idea - a hack that will come back to bite you. If Lemmy were changed to integrate Mastodon more, it'd ideally be a big project - one that would fully embrace the idiosyncrasies of Mastodon (like muting replies and denying Follow requests) because ignoring them would lead to trouble later on.

Not much for beets. My config.yaml is just:

library: ~/.config/beets/musiclibrary2.db

import:
    move: yes

terminal_encoding: utf8

plugins: fetchart embedart

(so fetchart and embedart are the only plugins)

(from then on, a Navidrome server hosts the music, and I tend to use a Windows app called 'Feishin' to play it)

"So the choice is ... or bees?" (which is two Eddie Izzard references in one)

The cookie pop-up for this site gives you 2 options: 'Accept and continue' or 'Decline and subscribe' which I've never seen before and enters a new level of cookie choice abuse. (Accept is for 823 partners, btw)

Hmm. Just re-checked. Still says the same thing for me. Maybe it's country-specific (I'm in the UK), or browser-specific (I'm using Chrome on Android), or being A/B tested (although the comment about all French newspapers doing this suggests otherwise).

Tesseract. You can use it for your own instance by logging in to it at https://tesseract.dubvee.org/ (which is a bit counterintuitive, because there's also a local Lemmy server there, but it works). Or self-host it of course (see https://github.com/asimons04/tesseract)

Something's not quite working btw. It's tricky to chat about because various front-ends auto-convert absolute links to instance-specific ones, so I'll surround them in code blocks and hopefully they'll leave 'em alone. Anyway: the fedi-link for this post is https://dubvee.org/post/1007192 which is where it is, but if you try to visit that with a browser you're re-directed to https://tesseract.dubvee.org/post/lemmy.world/1007192 which isn't correct - it should either not re-direct you or re-direct you to the correct URL at https://tesseract.dubvee.org/post/lemmy.world/14138451

This is a great list. Note, though, that lemmyverse.net (and by extension, !trendingcommunities) are less useful at the current moment than before because lemmyverse needs an update before it can crawl the increasing numbers of instances on 0.19.4 or above.
