Aw darn, I usually like Vox. I guess I won’t be getting news from them as much anymore

The ugly truth behind ChatGPT: AI is guzzling resources at planet-eating rates (www.theguardian.com)

Despite its name, the infrastructure used by the “cloud” accounts for more global greenhouse emissions than commercial flights. In 2018, for instance, the 5bn YouTube hits for the viral song Despacito used the same amount of energy it would take to heat 40,000 US homes annually....

We already have a more elegant solution than training AI when solar arrays produce more electricity than the grid needs - batteries. It strikes me as a better option to save the energy for later use than to burn it off to train AI.

SandbagTiara2816 ,

Ah, that makes sense! Yeah, I’m out of my depth when it comes to how to train an AI model. I tend to leap into defense mode when intermittency of renewable energy comes up, because it’s very often an anti-renewables talking point, when we actually do have a lot of solutions for it.

SandbagTiara2816 ,

It is for sure a tricky question. Another comment pointed out that we may be coming at the topic from different directions. I’ll admit that the energy demands of AI make me nervous, when I consider how hard the transition to renewables already is without the added load, but I’m not familiar with work in that space to make AI training less energy intense. What options are being worked on?

(Other than SMR or betting on fusion)

SandbagTiara2816 ,

Heck yeah! Love me some pumped hydro

SandbagTiara2816 ,

It’s what brought me over! And then I learned so many more reasons to hate it that I hadn’t even known about lol

SandbagTiara2816 OP ,

Does word soup come before or after word salad? You’re right though lol, I just copied the title directly from the article

SandbagTiara2816 ,

Honestly, I think there is something to that. You probably do need to be a sociopath in order to become a CEO like that, but I’d also buy that becoming wealthy, by any means, is probably going to change you and your worldview whether you like it or not

SandbagTiara2816 ,

Neat! I’ll probably try it out. Like it or not, short form video is really popular now, so this feels like a good thing to grow Pixelfed and the fediverse

SandbagTiara2816 OP ,

It’s convention, I think. If I remember correctly, you always put y on the left, because you can also write equations as functions of a variable, x, with the symbology f(x) = mx + b. That way you can integrate and derive the function easily, since m and b are constants, and all your x variables are on one side.

If I were to encounter x = my + b, the first thing I would do, just by nature at this point, would be to convert it to y = (x - b) / m.

It’s been a while since I took math, and I was never the best, so others should feel free to correct me.

I find the stackable layers interesting, but I like the decentralization of the fediverse. I’m way outside my realm of expertise here, but would it be possible for a platform to adopt both?

SandbagTiara2816 ,

Neat, I’ll have to look into it. Thanks!

Why did it irritate folks at bluesky?

SandbagTiara2816 ,

Did you read the article? Or did you just see ‘North Carolina’ in the title and decide to complain about the United States?

SandbagTiara2816 ,

What exactly is an “AI PC”? What makes it better than a non-AI PC? Is this a product that consumers are asking for?

SandbagTiara2816 ,

I suppose a better way to phrase it is- why is an NPU necessary? What does it enable these machines to do that a Surface sans NPU can’t?

And yes, these are business-oriented. But my question remains the same - is built-in AI a feature that businesses, as consumers of this product, are asking for? And presumably this is just the beginning, and future personal devices from Microsoft will have NPUs too. I haven’t heard any clamoring for that, but I could very well also just not be noticing the people that are

Let’s not make the same mistakes with AI that we made with social media (www.technologyreview.com)

From the article: "In particular, five fundamental attributes of social media have harmed society. AI also has those attributes. Note that they are not intrinsically evil. They are all double-edged swords, with the potential to do either good or ill. The danger comes from who wields the sword, and in what direction it is swung....

Electrical substations are really necessary for the clean energy we need. We don’t want everyone off the grid, we need to clean the energy production going into the grid and invest in resilience measures, like energy storage and undergrounding wires, especially in vulnerable and energy insecure communities
