what's your current linux distro?

wanting to hop into the world of linux on a dual boot method (one of my favorite games unfortunately cannot be run on linux at all, and it's a gacha. I don't want to gamble with my account being banned, so I'm keeping windows for it specifically.) this'll be my second go at it, I used Pop!_OS briefly but had some issues with...

Debian

I've tried different distros and liked them, but tend to come back to Debian.

My scepticism is through the roof reading this. First, I find it hard to believe that he has two working units unless they are programmed to sit in front of a terminal and tap Y...

Maybe just bad research. I haven't tried, but I'm sure if you search for "how to protect yourself online" some of the SEO manipulating websites show up in the first results.

Ok. Makes sense. The video is geoblocked for me so I probably should've kept my mouth shut

There are solutions that work. Like you, I would enjoy a simple app that allows for subscriptions and playlists without tracking or using an account. I mostly use RSS feeds (newsboat) and watch the videos through mpv.

And yt-fzf is great too. It uses invidious instances instead of YouTube links.

Before you delete your comments and reviews change them to something very basic and neutral?

Android phone saving metadata for screenshots (i.ibb.co)

I always remove this data from my screenshots before sharing, but is there any way to prevent this from happening in the first place? I've searched and searched, but all I can find is information about how to remove the data after the fact, which I already know how to do, but it would sure be nice if it never got added in the...

What app are you using to see the exif data? Perhaps my screenshot has this info as well but the different apps I use to view exif data do not show it.

Ok, yes, my phone (which is not a Samsung) also includes some info in screenshots.

The convo on HN about this article is worth a quick scroll.

The first comment (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=39570137) launches a discussion about freedom filled with anecdotes. There are even more anecdotes (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=39570364). And even some praise (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=39570484).

I am not a dev. I don't rice, I don't game. I'm a FOSS user and have been for years. If I run into a problem, there is no way I will be creating an account on Discord to get help. It might not be worth the time and effort. A searchable forum is good enough. IRC logs are good enough. Email lists are good enough. But, also, some open source software makes onboarding seem more cumbersome than it actually is. Getting on Matrix is easy, but in he eyes of a new user it comes off as Herculean. And when a dev decides to use Discord we shake our fists instead of proposing a solution like operating the bridge for them.

I use MuPDF but there is also the GrapheneOS PDF viewer available on their GitHub

You can install it using Obtainium or jus grab it from the GitHub page.

Help with a simple and private phone

Hi everyone, I’m looking to possibly simply my smartphone setup. I would really love to keep it as a utility: phone, text, camera, GPS, web browser, notes, email, music player. Im think of switching to local NextCloud backup system as well. I currently have an iPhone but used to flash ROMs on Android phones, so I would be...

Punkt is neat, but in the end it is Android (if you can believe it). So, it has Signal (or Pigeon, as they've branded it) but it is also vulnerable the same way any Android phone can be. There are some baked-in apps that track and whatnot.

Newsboat

I am not one of these terminal wizards. I do heck of a lot in the terminal, though. One thing I never thought I'd do in browse RSS feeds.

But, a few years back I was in a situation where my only working computer was a Raspberry Pi so I found myself using Newsboat and I realised the big deal.

What non-FOSS software are you using that you wish you could replace?

For me its honestly a ton of my work software (digital forensics), shit is too niche to be replaced by good FOSS options. Cellebrite, Magnet Axiom, etc. Autopsy is great and free and has a linux version but it simply cannot get the same level of data without a pretty nutty level of custom code....

On my phone: a FOSS "find-my-phone" function

On my computer: a FOSS way to access Teams for work. Just give me a Weechat plugin please.

My nieces and nephew had iPads at 4

My nephew plays COD. He is 8. He sleeps with his iPad.

The nieces are are 6 and 11. They are obsessed with tiktok.

My son is 7 and goes to school with kids that have iPhones.

And my son only watches screens when we are supervising. He watches a lot of TV and plays Switch games though. Never phones and we don't have a tablet or any of the streaming stuff.

It is very hard not to give in.

Yep, I live in France (and this YouTuber is French, which is why he is talking about the case). This whole story passed under the radar here because it is the type of thing that French people would be up in arms about.

I think at some point they will likely pass a law related to encryption or ban some of the alternative app stores for phones.
