People get really weird about this, they act like you MUST cycle and train it everywhere and anything is just an excuse.

blackn1ght ,

Serious question: What's the leftists position on police in the ideal but realistic socialist world? What would make ACAB irrelevant?

blackn1ght ,

Police serve the wealthy, rather than the people

Are there common every day examples where this happens? I'll be honest my exposure to the police is extremely limited and from a UK perspective. Do you mean like the police will prioritise responding faster to wealthy people and are more likely to put resources in solving crimes against them than your average person?

blackn1ght ,

No, I mean by upholding Private Property Rights

What does this mean though? Like if someone breaks into my house then they shouldn't be coming over to investigate?

enforcing racist and anti-poor laws they uphold the brutal status quo

Is this not an issue with the laws of the country rather than the police? I feel like it would be an even bigger issue if the police just became a law unto themselves and decided on their own what they should laws they should or shouldn't enforce.

blackn1ght ,

I'm late to reply but thank you for the response, this is the kind of response and examples I was looking for.

Of course it was lol. Rule 1 apparently - "Be civil and nice". I literally linked to an achived blog post, how was I being uncivil?

    blackn1ght ,

They do though? They provide a place to live that you can move into way faster than you can if you were buying it. They cover the maintenance costs, and some even provide properties that are fully furnished.

I agree that they hoard properties for financial gain but they do provide something.

    blackn1ght ,

What's the problem? Just use your third hand to keep the button down

    blackn1ght ,

If you're a landlord then surely you have the power not to do this with your property or properties?

    blackn1ght ,

Putting the £ sign after the value is in itself mildly infuriating.

    blackn1ght ,

I don't even "hear" lyrics in songs! Is it typical for albums to have songs that tell an overall story?

    blackn1ght ,

Why on earth would they refuse to do it? It's one of the best things to do!

    blackn1ght ,

The human does it out of self preservation, but the car doesn't need to feel too preserve itself.

By getting the in the car, the passengers should be aware of the risks and that if there is an accident, the car will protect pedestrians over the occupants. The pedestrians had no choice but the passengers have a choice of not getting in the vehicle.

I feel like car manufacturers are going to favour protecting the passengers as a safety feature, and then governments will eventually legislate it to go the other way after a series of high profile deaths of child pedestrians.

    blackn1ght ,

On a slightly unrelated note, the Mercedes EQ class are really ugly, both internally and externally.

    blackn1ght ,

I've been watching a lot of car reviews lately and yeah, I think you're right on all points. I watched a review of the new BMW 7 series and even the air control vents are capacitive sensors refer than little levers and it just seems unnecessary. What was hilarious was that the door release is right by the air vent control, so the review I watched saw the reviewer accidentally open the door when they were trying to control the air vent.

There's way way way too much reliance on touch screens in cars. I'm not even sure if you'd legally be allowed to use them in some countries, I feel like you'd have to pull over to just change the HVAC settings! You'd swear it was designed by someone that's never driven a car. They're decisions that are probably coming right from the top and the actual interior designers are pulling their hair out.

There's also a common theme across manufacturers where settings for features are lost when the car is switched off. So you have to go into the settings and change them back every single time you get into the car.

If I were in the market for a car (specifically electric), I'd probably go for Kia. The ev6 and ev9 look really nice. I've seen a couple of EV9s on the road recently and I was surprised at how much smaller they actually seem than on videos.

Like you though we're going to keep our car (Nissan Quashqai) as long as possible. There's no bullshit and it's practical and comfortable.

    blackn1ght ,

I also wonder what happens as new generations start to become prominent, they might not have the same ideals as their parents and either move away or change the dynamics of the group.

    blackn1ght ,

What are your other contacts using? They can't be stuck sending SMS and paying per message surely?

Revealed: a California city is training AI to spot homeless encampments (www.theguardian.com)

Last July, San Jose issued an open invitation to technology companies to mount cameras on a municipal vehicle that began periodically driving through the city’s district 10 in December, collecting footage of the streets and public spaces. The images are fed into computer vision software and used to train the companies’...

This comment is so ridiculous it has to be some sort of bait.

    blackn1ght ,

Or you can just purchase any of those features permanently

The subscription model for features on a car is shitty for a host of reasons, but at least they're still offering the option to buy them outright like normal. If you really value ownership then at least you can purchase the car and buy these addons up front.

I'm going to go against the grain here and say I do see why they think doing this could be attractive to customers. I'd wager to say that ownership of their vehicle isn't a priority, just look at how many people lease their cars now vs buying outright. This is a market that will have the car and replace it within 3 years. So these type of people may purchase upfront an extra they absolutely do care about and must have, but if there's something else they're a bit unsure of, they could leave it off, get the subscription for a month to try it, and then decide if they want to continue on a longer plan to keep the feature.

    blackn1ght ,

I hear you, but the vast majority of Audi customers just won't care about this DRM or property rights on their car. If they're leasing then it's irrelevant as it's never their car in the first place. It just won't even be something that they even consider.

What their customers will care about is the fact that they don't have to financially commit to getting an "optional extra" up front, but instead can pick and choose when they want to use it.

    blackn1ght ,

I think the latest models also have the gear selector (or whatever they're called for automatics / EVs) on the touch screen, so you need to swipe up to put it into drive.

    blackn1ght ,

Or left hand for right-hand drive cars, but yes.

I watch the CarWow channel on YouTube and they review a lot of EV's, and the host struggled with it - it would take him several attempts to get it into drive as he'd swipe up but not all the way so it would never actually engage. I guess in that case a software fix could be applied to make the control more sensitive but it's still fucking stupid to have it there in the first place.

Also for more WTFs, on that same channel, they do these challenges where they drive a bunch of EVs on a route and see which one goes the furthest, which has the closest range to what the manufacture claims it'll do and what happens to the vehicle when it runs out of battery. There was an instance where the Tesla ran out of charge, but they couldn't open the recharging port because the little door is electronic.

    blackn1ght ,

I understand all those requirements except the tape player. I don't why anyone would need that? In fact they'd probably just add additional cost as I imagine getting brand new tape decks would be hard to source now.

    blackn1ght ,

TIL the second amendment applies to everyone in the world.

    blackn1ght ,

You said everybody without a context of a country, which implies everyone around the world, not everyone in the USA. It's okay though, I'll forgive your stupidity in forgetting there's people outside the US.

Fortunately for me I am from one of those countries. It's not like they've got guns either. Even if we did, what would people do? Start randomly shooting at people who we think are fascists?

    blackn1ght ,

The only hope is that Labour are enacting a strategy of just getting elected first. Once they're in they can start moving to the left a bit more.

    blackn1ght ,

I always have a custom background on even though my room is tidy. It's just that our bed is directly behind me and I don't particularly feel like showing everyone our bed, even though really it's harmless. It's just a privacy thing, not something to hide mess.

The people who voted Brexit weren't concerned about their ability to side load apps

    blackn1ght ,

Well they were basically only ever really concerned about two things (immigration and muh sovereignty), they didn't give a shit about anything else, they'd even say it would be worth the UK going backwards for decades to get out of the EU.

FE car produces more emissions throughout the season than F1 or NASCAR due to expensive manufacturing

Are you able to expand on this? What's unique to FE's manufacturing that it could be more impactful than F1? I can only assume it's something to do with the batteries, but F1 also uses batteries for the hybrid system, albeit smaller than FE's.

    blackn1ght ,

As a fan of F1, and I casually watch FE, I'd much rather have human commentators, thanks.

    blackn1ght ,

Thanks for the reply. It definitely sounds like there should be a limit on the number of batteries used per season then. There must be a reason for doing it though - are they just not as performant once they've been through a race weekend?

    blackn1ght ,

The only two possible reasons I can think of are to try and keep on top of costs, and to keep performance of the teams as close as possible.

    blackn1ght ,

None of them. I don't care who they are, nobody should be a billionaire.
