Right? I want a PHEV so range isn't something I really need to think about.

bobburger ,

Since a lot of people seem to be jumping to extreme conclusions about this based on specious assumptions, here's how the process works according to the article:

Magrathea — named after a planet in the hit novel The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy — buys waste brines, often from desalination plants, and allows the water to evaporate, leaving behind magnesium chloride salts. Next, it passes an electrical current through the salts to separate them from the molten magnesium, which is then cast into ingots or machine components.

bobburger ,

Fun fact: the person your replying to had absolutely no idea that a desalination plant was involved in this process.

I'm not sure what features you're looking for, but Quarto has a lot of really nice features that make it really easy to self host a blog.

Llamafile is a great way to get use an LLM locally. Inference is incredibly fast on my ARM macbook and rtx 4060ti, its okay on my Intel laptop running Ubuntu.

bobburger ,

I think the argument is interesting.

Absolutely no one would support this if the question was instead "If you're alone in the woods would you rather come across a bear or a black/Mexican/Arab/whatever person". However, since right now it's socially popular to group men into a monolithic group and demonize them the man vs bear question and is a very funny and popular meme.

You can understand the point of the meme and still understand that it denigrates half the poplulation and creates toxic discord towards people who are perfectly good human beings.

Not trying to JAQ off here, which societies have been more effective and successfully built by market socialism. Wikipedia only lists a few failed states as having implemented Market Socialism. Also listed is Vietnam, which seems to be doing okay. Most of the growth seems to be coming from trade and investment from capitalist countries in the past 20 years or so. So is their success coming from Market Socialism or excess wealth from Capitalist counties?

Regardless of where their wealth comes from they do seem to be doing a good job of reducing income inequality while raising the standard of living for a lot of citizens.

bobburger ,

Gotcha, so like free market socialism.

bobburger ,

It seems that you're proposing that there's some point of sustainable economic output. Under all socialist states once that sustainable point is reached economic output would be frozen and from thereafter only that level of economic output is achieved.

Then what happens? Do you also freeze population levels somehow? Do you start restricting who has access to resources they need because there are more people than resources than can be produced under the economic output cap?

bobburger ,

You answered 0 of my questions and instead responded with a bunch of non sequitur straw men. Be better.

bobburger ,

I use it for exactly the same thing.

I used to spend hours agonizing over documenting things because I couldn't get the tone right, or in over explained, or some other stupid shit.

Now I give my llamafile the code, it gives me a reasonable set of documentation, I edit the documentation because the LLM isn't perfect, and I'm done in 10 minutes.

bobburger ,

Llamafile runs entirely on your machine. The largest one I can run locally is Mistral-7B and Wizardcoder 13B. They seem to be on par with chatgpt-3, but that's okay for my purposes.

bobburger ,

A simpler answer might be llamafile if you're using Mac or Linux.

If you're on windows you're limited to some smaller LLMs without some work. In my experience the smaller LLMs are still pretty good as chat bots so they might translate well.

Why didn't Biden turn off the genocide switch 5 months ago? Surely the president of the United States has sole control over what happens in another country. Can't he just travel back in time and undo military aide that happened years ago? Surely this a simple issue that Biden has complete control over and he can stop it with a thought if he wanted? Right guys?

You can't deduct your mortgage from your taxes, only the interest. And only on mortgages related to your first or second home. From irs.gov

This part explains what you can deduct as home mortgage interest. It includes discussions on points and how to report deductible interest on your tax return.

Generally, home mortgage interest is any interest you pay on a loan secured by your home (main home or a second home). The loan may be a mortgage to buy your home, or a second mortgage.

bobburger ,

First, I'm glad you made it to the fediverse Loon-god, you'll always be a Warrior's legend.

Second, anecdotally even the crappy results generated by LLMs have value for me. Writing emails, jira tickets, documentation, etc. are all incredibly painful for me. I'll start an email and suddenly folding laundry I've ignored for 2 days is the most important thing in the world for me. Then the email that should take 5 minutes takes me an hour and turns out being way to long and dense.

With an LLM I give it a few bullet points with general details, it spits out a paragraph or so, I edit the paragraph for tone and add specific details, and then I'm done in about 5 minutes.

LLMs help me to complete tasks that I really really don't want to do, which has a lot of value to me. They aren't going to replace me at my job, but they've have really upped my productivity.

bobburger ,

41% is the number of executives that think AI will reduce their work force, not the number of jobs they expect to replace.

Your point stands though.

bobburger ,

Please educate me.

bobburger ,

I appreciate your sentiment, but your lived experience is not everyone else's lived experience.

My lived experience is racism is dead because I'm not racist and neither are friends.

Sexual assault doesn't happen because I've never sexually assaulted anyone and only one person I know has been sexually assaulted.

The economy is doing great because my company handed out $10k bonuses to all employees this year along with a 5% raise.

Which lived experience should we believe?

Please, for the love of God, VOTE! (pawb.social)

I don't like Biden either, but anyone with half a brain knows there are two choices in the 2020 election. If we had a sane voting system, voting third party might be worth it, but as it stands, no one but you knows your favorite candidate exists and unless you want to become their campaign manager that will still be true in...

bobburger ,

Lol, yeah I'm going to organize an armed rebellion against a country that can shoot me in the chest with a fucking rocket covered in swords from the other side of the world while I'm chilling on my deck with my family.

bobburger ,

EVs only recover about 90% of the energy used I'm braking with regenerative braking. That means they don't even recover all of the energy needed to slow the car down, which certainly not enough to get the car back up to it's previous speed.

All this to say:

Regenerative braking doesn’t add significant miles to your driving range.

So relying solely on regenerative braking isn't going to have any meaningful impact on driving range.

Source

bobburger ,

You aren't getting the full benefits of a plugin hybrid electric motor if you're relying on regenerative braking. My source clearly explains this.

You get small efficiency gains that add up over time, but you certainly aren't seeing a meaningful extension in range over a single trip, and you certainly aren't seeing the benefits of a plug in electric motor if you rely on regenerative braking. In fact, this was one of the main points made in the OP; phev drivers rely on the ICE and thus don't achieve the emissions benefits that should come with a phev.

bobburger ,

And you dont see how voting for the "lesser evil" allows both parties to move further and further right?

I see a lot of people who aren't voting using this logic and I don't really understand it.

If there are some number of candidates running, and the most left wing candidate wins each time, how does that push the country to the right?

bobburger ,

That doesn't really make sense, but I appreciate the honest effort.

Good luck, I hope you remember that one of Trump and Biden is going to be the next president whether you vote or not. Which one do you think is going to push the US farther to right? (That's a rhetorical question that you should answer for yourself, no one else's opinion really matters here)
