Source?

Good one, but I meant the comic/manga.

I looked at kernel source code enough as a gentoo user

I personally do a restic backup on my server (I have a dedicated hetzner server), and keep a backup on the server itself, and do a backup to a backblaze bucket for an offsite backup.

I also have a restic check job run every week, that reads 10% of the random data making sure everything is fine and working correctly.

For my local machine I do the same but additionally backup also to an usb drive for a 3-2-1 backup solution.

I tend to use rsync 99% times.

crony ,
@crony@lemmy.cronyakatsuki.xyz avatar

I would just use rsync on the whole folder.

Rsync is smart enough to be able to only send files you didnt' have previously like a regular mv command.

Or you can sync the whole directory and have it also delete removed files.

Edit: If you wan't something to automatically "sync/backup" the data, why don't you try and use syncthing? P2P syncing solution that might be exactly what you need in your hse case.

crony ,
@crony@lemmy.cronyakatsuki.xyz avatar

When it comes to media like my music library and comics for example I just use rsync to move new ones to the server every time I collect some new (I have about 60gb of it)

crony ,
@crony@lemmy.cronyakatsuki.xyz avatar

No, I only have new files on my local machine, and as I collect new stuff I move them to my server with rsync and just remove it onthe local machine.

Rsync is more than smart enough to, if you keep same folder structure to easilly move the files to the server without you having to manually copy other each file.

Don't really have some rn. Will make a page on my wiki and link it to you later with some basic examples.

crony ,
@crony@lemmy.cronyakatsuki.xyz avatar

Here is the link to the wiki page I created: rsync

The most important part for you is the last one, but I would recomend to read it whole to understand how rsync works a bit.

What do you mean spend mental energy on keybindings? Sure it will take you a couple times to do them to remenber them but after that you will just know them without having to think about them.

I don't know if it took me more than a couple hours to learn enough keybindings to be more productive than in vscode, and later on I just learned more as I need them and am now able to use them without thinking about it.

I used to spend more time searching for the button to click with a mouse and remembering in what menu it was than it took me to learn and use vim keybindings.

But this is all diff from person to person.

Honestly I just have a directory with markdown files I sync between my devices using syncthing.

For editing on pc I use neovim and for editing on phone I use markor.

I recently started something similar using bookstack as the software behind.

Still severely lacking in content but am willing for anyone who has time and something interesting to write in it as long it's connected to tech, preferably linuc and open source software.

Here is the link and if anyone want's to contribhte I'm more than willing to accept a couple editor to grow the content on it.

Now I'm on nixos because gentoo didn't have a good retroarch package.

Password Manager that supports multiple databases/syncing?

I currently use keePass, and use it on both my PC and my phone. I like it because I can keep a copy of my DB on my phone and export it through a few different means. But I can't seem to find an option to actually sync my local DB against a remote one. I've thought about switching to BitWarden but from what I can see it uses a...

Just add in syncthing in your stack and you will get keepass with the benefit of syncing directly between devices in a p2p matter.

I have been using this combo for almost 2 years now and it's better if you ask me than using vaultwarden.

Used to not monitor at all, but after setting up crowdsec I got completeky into prometheus + grafana system resource and security monitiring on my dedicated hetzner server.

I also keep uptime kuma on another cheap vps to monitor the states of websites directly for issues and I have seted up watchtower to send ntfy notifications on updates so I can know an update is the one fucking everything up.

Recently also setup restuc backups so I made it so I also get backup health check logs as ntfy notifications on my phone, which really helps me keep everything runnig.

What I really need to also do is create prometheus/grafana alerts for additional things to get notifications on my phone for them also ( like when crowdsec starts to randomly not get any more acqusitions, so I have to restart it. Once passed over a week before I looked at grafana and caught that ).

Note: this is all a hoby, I also don't host anything at home out of a couple reasons, most important being internet and hardware is expensive af here so it's simply cheaper for me to play around with vps's and hetzner dedicated servers.

You guys have more than one lane way per way?

Our main roads have one lane per direction, meaning two lains in total and our highways have 2 lanes per direction in total 4.

We get huge traffic jams in summer cause of tourists which can easilly go up to 30km.

Maybe one more lane each direction could actuwlly help there on the highway.

crony ,
@crony@lemmy.cronyakatsuki.xyz avatar

Yea I can see that happening, I was mostly sarcastic at the fact there are countries that stuggle with god know how many lanes and us who have max 4.

Edit: The biggest problem here in total is the complete lack of public transport.

crony , (edited )
@crony@lemmy.cronyakatsuki.xyz avatar

Our cities are made to be walkable, it's Croatia after all.

But we have almost 0 public transport, especially between different cities, we only have train between 3 cities in the whole country and the train's go max 40km/h. Most of our cities are also small enough that you don't need any public transport inside of them cause everything that is in the cities is in the walkable distance ( I will explain later what the "is in cities" part means ), except the couple bigger ones that have buses that go every 20 mins to locations.

When it comes to buses also almost 0, tourists and even locals have to rely on buses for tourists that are controlled literally by other countries cause buses here barelly go. One good example is between 2 biggect cities here bus only goes to one then back to another at monday and friday, and only once in morning and once afternoon.

Worst part is that everything spread out across, if somebody here gets sick, he will have to travel to 3+ diff cities for diffeerent examinations each being 100+ km appart from each other + no public transportion unless the day you have the exam a bus is going otherwise you need to get someone to drive you there or have your own car. Same with buying literally anything other than just basic necesities.

What we have is complete lack of public transport and the fact everything is much spread out that it forces you into owning a car, or to get someone who can drive you, taxis also arent a thing here and are only found in couple big citiea, while being so expensive it's not worth it.

Edit: forgot to mention that most people here work and commute to job in different cities than what they live in, I had work in summer and had to commute 68km in one way each day for the work by my car because no public transport, reason being I was getting commute money from the job as compensation for having to use my personal venicle so it ended up being a lot cheaper than moving closer to the job. Even now searching for another job I still end up going for job intervies in cities 50+km away cause there is almost no job close to where I live and will most likelly commute to them again because it will be cheaper than moving there. I used me as an example but a lot of people that I know commute to their jobs by their car that are easilly 50+ km away,

Another good example was my hs english teacher, she traveled around 200km dailly one way to my hs cause it was cheaper than moving here with her 1 year old kid and working husband in her city of living.

crony , (edited )
@crony@lemmy.cronyakatsuki.xyz avatar

Check my other comment, but short answer is nope.

Edit: those are rugular public roads that are the only way to travel, not specific areas.

Update: I have ended up with hosting a sharkey instance, mostly because of it's very active development and nice ui. ( No way it was cause of the shark costumed waifu )

crony ,
@crony@lemmy.cronyakatsuki.xyz avatar

You could try using ssh reverse proxy and proxy the port to the vps.

Another way is to setup wireguard on the vps, connect the powerfull machine to it and keep it always connected there. ( This isn't really a good options since then all traffic is moved thrkught the vps )

There is also grok I think that's the name.

In general I think ssh reverse port proxy would be a decent way and then you can use a reverse proxy on the vps like nginx or caddy ( you need one that works on the host network )

I don't have access to amazon at all, ao don't get the rave about amazon itself either.

Is Framework actually "good" for the industry?

Framework as in the laptop company, just for clarity. https://frame.work/. For those unaware, the idea is that these are laptops built with a high degree of modularity so that you can replace far more than a single stick of SODIMM with the goal of even upgrading your CPU and mainboard a few years down the line....

crony OP ,
@crony@lemmy.cronyakatsuki.xyz avatar

Yea I'm using let's encrypt. Juet wanted to hear opinions from people who are probably more experienced than me.

crony OP , (edited )
@crony@lemmy.cronyakatsuki.xyz avatar

I'm open to using sothing like caddy or traefic, but my issue is I have a mix of packages hosted directly on system and in docker container's and as such need to proxy them all.

That's why I'm not using caddy or traefic.

Edit: rn my mix consists of about 16 diff containeraized stuff and another 4-5 not containerized stuff.

Edit2: Just now realized that they can be used on the host system's also. Would you recommend traefic or caddy?

crony OP ,
@crony@lemmy.cronyakatsuki.xyz avatar

Requires me to add cname record's, which beats the purpose of automation honestly. Will most likelly move to caddy.

crony OP ,
@crony@lemmy.cronyakatsuki.xyz avatar

Do you have it on host or container. I'm thinking abour switching to caddy on my host and replacing nginx with it but just wan't to hear your experience with it.

Certbot has no support for vultr dns, not even with plugins. Already check.

crony OP ,
@crony@lemmy.cronyakatsuki.xyz avatar

Nice ui, and I already have a vps there. My main dns provider is namecheap but made it use vultr under the hood because of the nice ui.

Yes

crony OP ,
@crony@lemmy.cronyakatsuki.xyz avatar

@crony@lemmy.cronyakatsuki.xyz avatar

Hi already tried that, worked for one domain and then stopped working for every other domain.

crony OP ,
@crony@lemmy.cronyakatsuki.xyz avatar
