Chocrates ,

Anyone use it and can compare it to moonlight?

Chocrates ,

Is there a tool to version your configs? I use chezmoi for my dotfiles but that doesn't help system configs

Chocrates ,

Yep I still add .bak to mine

Chocrates ,

What language? This comic feels very American. I am surprised it came from somewhere else.

Corporate astroturfing is the norm

Went to Google Play to complain about Hulu. I noticed Google advertising that over 300 reviews had the verbatim quote "watch and movies that you love". It's always confusing that buggy corporate apps have >95% 5 star reviews until you see that the majority are just completely fake, and no one cares or is doing anything about it.

Chocrates ,

I agree with you, but look where the money is at. Google and Amazon and the rest want to take a cut of the money you give these apps and goods. It loses them money if they police these things.

That's why strong regulation can be a good thing, keep the capitalists in check at least a tiny bit.

The Sign (lemmy.stuart.fun)

For context, in case you don't have kids (therefor you probably don't watch Bluey), the family in the car (the Heelers) was selling their house to move for a job but ultimately, the dad (Bandit) decided staying at their house with family was more important. As a final act of demonstration, he lifts the for-sale sign out of the...

Chocrates ,

I was interested in Vagrant when it came out, but it was a touch too early in my career. I still don't really understand why it exists or what problem it solves.

Chocrates ,

Tesla made good cars before. It is reasonable to assume that they would continue to do that. The people that have a cyberteuck today are people that paid for it years ago, so they wouldn't have known how shitty it actually turned out to be.

I can't account for Tesla's continuing and worsenin quality control though as well as their cost saving measures that make the cars less safe. I don't know how you see those trends and not cancel your pre order.

Chocrates ,

That we tend to put on weight as we age?

Chocrates ,

I think the question is why do we seem to be seeing it everywhere all of a sudden. It is an old shitty practice but Roku kicked it off recently and seems like we see a bunch of others for some reason.

Chocrates ,

Yeah but for software you want it to work and sometimes need help, when you steal that software you are often on your own.
In open source, there is nearly always an open alternative that comes with community support!

Chocrates ,

Fair point, that is my fear too. I run Ubuntu so nearly all my software is open source already and for the slim number of tools that aren't in just pay for them because they are good enough to warrant it imo.

Chocrates ,

Hahaha yep.

The pumps at buckees run Ubuntu I think.

Chocrates ,

I just bought an Nvidia GPU because my main use is vifo, and AMD is hard to make work.
Im still salty

Chocrates ,

Why can ai not figure out fingers?

Chocrates ,

It is part of the calculus of employment. You get these shares and you deem if they are worth something (you think the company is compatently run and will IPO) or you think they are worthless.

You can talk about how pointless and probably predatory that is, but that is the current system we inhabit.

Fwiw I walked away from imaginary shares. My public company went private by a hedge fund. Honestly hedge funds are good at making short term cash so maybe that was a bad decision, but I wanted no part in the next year or more of layoffs. Plus my imaginary stock was still on a vest cycle so it would vest probably after the stock was skyrocketing.

Chocrates ,

I have Jellyfin stream old sitcom reruns almost all day while I work. I just don't need to upgrade all that often.

Chocrates ,

I don't know what your setup is, but since I work from home I found that I don't like to be in my office doing shit on my computer that much these days 😞

Just having a screen in another room is helpful to isolate my workday from my free time.
It kinda sucks, I enjoy tinkering with shit on my computer

Chocrates ,

If only we could have somehow linked the video.

https://youtu.be/W6hiY5rohlw?si=Ki6wJmTHA8sF_Hy0

Guessing this is it.

Chocrates ,

I was only able to watch half (of the 3 minute video...) but that is so badass

Chocrates ,

Sorry missed that.

Avast fined $16.5 million for ‘privacy’ software that actually sold users’ browsing data (www.theverge.com)

Avast, the cybersecurity software company, is facing a $16.5 million fine after it was caught storing and selling customer information without their consent. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced the fine on Thursday and said that it’s banning Avast from selling user data for advertising purposes.

Chocrates ,

Do we know how much money they made on it? If it was more than $16.5 then it was still a good step on their balance sheet.

This stuff needs to be fined at the full income they made from the tool plus some penalty. Corporations only care about their balance sheets.

Chocrates ,

I don't know about Yuzu's data collection but they were destroyed because they existed.

Chocrates ,

Not sure why you are getting down votes. Nobody wants SLS, even NASA. Congress is proping it up for pork

Chocrates ,

Uh is that real? It cant be.

Chocrates ,

Ah. Yeah musk is insane but his rockets are cheaper than the SLS will be. Hell Congress hasn't even funded more than 1 or 2 launches because it is so expensive.

Chocrates ,

Damn, the end of security through obscurity on my Linux box?

Chocrates ,

I don't get why China has anything to do with it. Isn't it out of Singapore?

Chocrates ,

Tim Sweeney is pretty openly against any Linux support for some reason so I think that soured Linux gamers against them.
I have been gaming on Linux for 15 years and it is so much better these days, but we are still not a 1st party target. I get why, but it sucks to be ignored and told to just deal with it forever. I spend as much or more on hardware and software than windows gamers (except for a Windows license I suppose) and I guess I have to vote with my wallet.

Chocrates ,

Are you sure it isn't enforceable? Forced arbitration clauses are very common and I think pretty solid legally.

Chocrates ,

FAIR Act

badass, but I am not sure the FAIR act was signed into law. I am finding conflicting information https://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/117/hr963

Chocrates ,

Yeah so it has passed the house but the Senate hasn't voted on it and therefore the President hasn't signed it and it isn't law?

Chocrates OP ,

Piped is just a front end and the data is still on Youtube servers right? Honestly that is probably enough but I'll check out the one /u/tkk13909@sopuli.xyz suggested.

Chocrates OP ,

nice! taking a look. Thank you

Chocrates ,

Can you expand a bit as to why? I wasn't part of it, but saw the same snippets we all saw during the Gamestop shit, and it seemed pretty toxic and a place for naive folks (me if I followed the advice lol) to lose a lot of money.

Chocrates ,

No joke I have had Gmail since it was invite only (i was a dumb kid and still have my dumb kid handle), but Google is scaring me finally and am on the cusp of figuring out how to self host.

Feels like the end of an era, and I am late to the game as well.

Chocrates ,

Me too, trying to figure out what I'm gonna do about Gmail.

Chocrates ,

I felt bad for the dude until I got to the part that it was a rental property.

Not all landlords are scum but enough of them are that everyone in the business is tainted.

Living indoors should be a human right. Charging for shelter should be illegal, same for food and water...

Chocrates ,

Any suggestions on how we can actually make corporations pay for the carbon they emit if a carbon tax isn't it?
Doing nothing is what we have been doing and it isn't working.

Chocrates ,

I loved Google for so long, but they have really lost it. I switched back to Firefox last year as a meek sign of protest. My work still uses Gmail and my personal email is still Gmail, it's gonna be rough to extricate myself. My fucking phone number is Google voice

Chocrates ,

Northstar seems to be a 3d printable AR headset of sorts. I am intrigued, though need to research it more.

Chocrates ,

And the cycle is complete!

  • Make a service that people love
  • Decide to IPO
  • Make investors happy by squeezing every last dime out of your customers until you are unusuable and a competitor comes up to start the cycle anew
Chocrates ,

Anyone got a favourite open source rss reader? So far I am mostly finding stuff with subscriptions. Even though many have a free plan i'd like to try to find an open one first

No, LLM is the AI, OP is saying if you train it with hate it's gonna spit out hate
