Microsoft has gone too far: including a Game Pass ad in the Settings app ushers in a whole new age of ridiculous over-advertising (www.techradar.com)

Windows 11 is getting out of hand with its push for advertisments, frankly - remember the recent full-screen pop-up to persuade users to install Edge or other Microsoft services? Then another advertisment was placed in the Start menu, and now Microsoft has finally worn my temper thin - with a new Game Pass ad coming to the...

I’ve been using Linux off and on for about 15 years now. It’s so much easier to use now compared to when I started. I understand why people might’ve avoided it in the past. But the list of excuses is getting pretty small these days.

djsaskdja ,

And eventually they’ll just pull the no ads version altogether.

djsaskdja ,

Your life looks pretty sick to me!

djsaskdja ,

Do you think it’s better than Voyager? That’s what I’ve been using. Pretty satisfied with it.

djsaskdja ,

I follow Biden on Threads via Mastodon. Not that I’m any huge fan of the guy, but I like to keep up with his social media presence all the same. I see value in this integration despite so many people being so aggressively opposed. The Fediverse has very few normies. I still appreciate the ability to observe their activities from a distance.

djsaskdja ,

Going entirely off memory, but the Threads user needs to manually go into their settings and turn on federation. Then your Mastodon or Lemmy server will need to not defederate with Threads. A bunch have done so preemptively out of EEE fears.

djsaskdja ,

I think you’re being overly pedantic.

djsaskdja ,

The ~2018 models right before they switched to the M series chips have been quite cursed from my experience. Basically all the touchbar models. Seen a bunch of those fail just out of warranty the last few years. Otherwise I agree Apple has been quite reliable otherwise.

djsaskdja ,

It’s probably all just Harry Potter fan fiction tbh.

djsaskdja ,

Would be more interesting if they had a Linux version.

djsaskdja ,

In what way is this year the biggest election year on record? It’s literally the exact same candidates as it was 4 years ago.

djsaskdja ,

They say this every 4 years and nothing really changes.

djsaskdja ,

He said he’d build a wall and Mexico would pay for it and that never happened either. Trump says a lot of stupid shit. It’s weird that he’s taken so seriously.

djsaskdja ,

It’s not like if Trump loses his supporters suddenly go away. These people will be right back here in 2028 trying the same shit. Hyping up every election like we’re on knife’s edge is so disingenuous. Especially when the opposing candidates are completely out of touch ghouls like Clinton and Biden. Personally I’m content to sit back and watch it all burn. We’re headed down a shit trajectory no matter who’s in office. There’s no hope for a good future unless we burn it all down anyway.

djsaskdja ,

Totally anecdotal, but I met my current partner not long after subscribing to the paid tier of Tinder. Those super likes came in handy. This was like 5 years ago though not sure how different it is now. I have to imagine it’s worse just like everything else.

djsaskdja ,

The situation is even more dire on iPhone.

djsaskdja ,

I have selected Fedora. Where did I go wrong?

djsaskdja ,

What do you need a system tray for? It has a drop-down control center on the top-right. That mirrors most of the functionality from a system tray that I would need.

djsaskdja ,

Hmmm alright I guess you laid out a pretty good argument. Even when I still used Windows I basically always ignored the system tray. I found it annoying and distracting. Didn’t even really notice it was gone when I started using Linux with GNOME.

djsaskdja ,

Only 3% of Windows users are on Windows 7. Compared to 70% on Windows 10. When that number drops significantly, that’s around the time I’d expect Steam to drop. They’ll go where their customers go.

djsaskdja ,

The US is a democracy? That’s news to me.

djsaskdja ,

51% win for Biden seems insanely optimistic right now.

djsaskdja ,

Debian for servers. Fedora for desktops. That’s my philosophy.

Microsoft is testing Game Pass ads on the Windows 11 Settings homepage (www.ghacks.net)

Microsoft's announcement: "We are introducing a new Game Pass recommendation card on the Settings homepage. The Game Pass recommendation card on Settings Homepage will be shown to you if you actively play games on your PC. As a reminder – the Settings homepage will be shown only on the Home and Pro editions of Windows 11 and...

djsaskdja ,

Why would anyone use this over Silverblue?

djsaskdja ,

Hmmm alright I guess I’ll take your word for it. My experience with Silverblue/Kinoite is that it’s already pretty close to zero maintenance if you choose.

Rabbit R1 is Just an Android App (lemmy.world)

See, it turns out that the Rabbit R1 seems to run Android under the hood and the entire interface users interact with is powered by a single Android app. A tipster shared the Rabbit R1’s launcher APK with us, and with a bit of tinkering, we managed to install it on an Android phone, specifically a Pixel 6a....
