Weird, I switched my daily driver in December 2022 over to Mint (likewise I've been using Linux for various things since '08, so not a noob) and it's been pretty damn solid since then, including upgrades from Mint 20 to 21 and all of the Mint 21 point releases.

Right now our government has been trending authoritarian, but our companies are full-blown dictatorships.

In my ideal world, we don't have private ownership of businesses. Instead of banks we only have credit unions, instead of corporations providing services, we'd have worker's co-ops. We wouldn't even really have a stock market per-se, because everyone would own a share of every company.

The duty of our collective ventures is to benefit mankind, not to steal from the poor and give to the rich. Furthermore, our society should be optimized for the freedom of its people, not the freedom of its corporate masters nor the freedom of its military industrial complex.

Probably the most prominent libertarian socialist thinker is Noam Chomsky.

They're not that kind of self-aware internally, from what I've managed to gather from interviews and blogs by ex-Googlers.

They think they're rewriting stuff to upgrade in one way or another based on internal pain points. The fact is, external criticism, even from real users, just doesn't penetrate the Google social bubble unless it's coming from another giant corporation or major government.

If (in the web client) you go into Administration -> Dashboard then in the sidebar click on General, then scroll down, there's an option named Login Disclaimer, which lets you add a message to the login screen for the web client.

I don't think there's any setting or mod that adds a MOTD like you're thinking of, that's just the closest thing I can think of off the top of my head

The Shield is also one of the only Android TV devices that passes on HD audio codecs, so if you stream any Blu-ray rips with DTS-HD Master Audio or Dolby TrueHD and you want passthrough to work correctly, you probably want a Shield.

A shield is just a client, can't be used as a server AFAIK.

DTS is just a different set of audio formats/standards, originally popularized in theaters by the movie Jurassic Park.

DTS-HD Master Audio is their lossless audio format, meaning it decompresses out to being the exact same audio bit-for-bit as the mixer heard when they finalized the audio for the movie.

Likewise, Dolby TrueHD is also a lossless digital audio format, so it also decompresses to the exact same audio the mixer heard when mixing/mastering the movie.

Care to elaborate, for those not as experienced as soldering? This isn't the most relatable post without some additional context.

For instance, my only experience soldering is with audio equipment (think wires and potentiometers), never with PCBs and I have no clue what you mean.

The person you were replying to was talking about complex subtitle formats. All Roku models only support .srt style subtitles, whereas a lot of anime has .ass/.ssa subtitles encoded and bluray/dvd rips have image-based formats like PGS. Those more advanced/complex formats can't be played by the Roku directly, so your server needs to transcode the video to burn the subtitles in.
