Personal beliefs expressed en masse seem to have shaped huge chunks of history and our planet, so…

Agree to disagree.

WeirdGoesPro ,
@WeirdGoesPro@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I’m not advocating for them either, but they all definitely mean something.

WeirdGoesPro ,
@WeirdGoesPro@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Eh just because an individual or a group finds something “meaningful” doesn’t mean, well, anything

This is the comment from a different user I was originally replying to. I’m not asserting anything other than that widespread belief has “meaning” through its impact on the world. I’m not asserting that those beliefs are factually correct or morally good.

You seem to think I’m advocating for religion, but I have not been doing that.

Why can’t it wait until you get home? We took ashtrays out of cars, so why would we put another addictive and distracting thing in there?

I play games too, but I also recognize that they can overwhelm some people.

WeirdGoesPro ,
@WeirdGoesPro@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I’m not trying to compare them on a chemical or scientific level.

I’m just saying that I was able to quit cigarettes and I have had some friends who are not able to quit video games, so it is at least a little addictive for some people, and those people would not be better served by one more place to play.

Hey, congrats! I’m 14 years clean from heroin myself.

Ok, I can see my opinion is in the minority here. Games in cars seems like a bad idea to me, but I’m not the king of cars.

Self hosting is actually crazy cheap compared to any kind of corporate solution. Anybody paying for SquareSpace, for instance, could cut their cost by a factor of 20 or more with a FOSS alternative like Ghost Blog.

I know my setup is over engineered a little so I pay a bit more, but my expenses are still under $100 per year for subscription services that support the self hosting.

$2.50 per month for a VPN.

$40 per year for two VPS’s (this is what I know I overpay for since I didn’t really know how much I needed when I set it up, but the time to change it is worth more to me than the extra $10 per year).

$17ish per year for a domain name.

Plex lifetime pass (around $100 one time).

And of course, ten million dollars in man hours spent learning how to use Linux.

My wife says she wishes she could make me scream like Linux does. I told her she would if I could put it in her bash.

She leaves me alone when I’m on the computer now. It’s quiet in here.

Something something government abuse being used to forcefully take over companies, businesses driven over seas, new avenue for corruption to flourish, etc.

I think businesses should be held accountable too, but creating a superhighway to nationalize control of any business that steps out of line is a recipe for disaster. How long until politicians use that power to find justification for stealing whole corporations?

Came here to say the same—a crack pipe is usually straight and open on both ends with a metal filter of iron wool in it, often of “Chore Boy” brand…or so I’ve heard.

I think the questions are more prominent because a wider audience of people are becoming more privacy conscious.

In my case, I haven’t had the advantage of going to school for any of this, so I have to pick up knowledge where I can. If there is a reliable tool available to accomplish my task, I’m more likely to use it than to pursue a more manual solution because even simple computing questions can be rabbit holes that result in hours of reading and learning.

The reason that I made this post is because your options are always limited by your awareness of available solutions, and I presumed there might be someone else out there who has struggled getting a VPN reliably bound to a service.

WeirdGoesPro OP ,
@WeirdGoesPro@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Indeed! There are many simple and quality ways to set it up, and users can pick anything they prefer. FOSS is dope like that.

My mind was really blown when I saw how easy it was to set up. I can’t endorse it enough—it is one of the easiest containers I’ve worked with, and it is doing a relatively complex job flawlessly.

    Are you using Nginx to make your app available on the web? If you are on a home internet connection, how confident are you that your ISP has given you a static IP?

    Running Nginx and Tailscale to route traffic through a VPS with a static IP has been way more reliable for me than any attempt at static IP hosting from a home connection in the past. At $5-$15 per year, a VPS is cheaper than the hassle of troubleshooting with an ISP at home.

    Media Library Statistics Display for Public Viewing

    I’m hoping to find some kind of statistical display for my media library that I can show on my website. The dark seed of the force is a pathway to many resolutions that some might consider…unnatural.

    WeirdGoesPro ,
    @WeirdGoesPro@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

    The g’s in cellular data have long been devoid of any real meaning, and they keep coming out with more g’s that have essentially no improvements.

    Much like how Netflix advertises 4k when the quality is no better than 1080p at best.

    WeirdGoesPro ,
    @WeirdGoesPro@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

    I know these things. Doesn’t change what I was saying though.

    Netflix has been advertising content in 4k and then streaming it at a lower resolution.

    Likewise, the advertising for 5g leads you to believe that it is somehow vastly improved from the previous generation when no guarantee of that exists.

    But most importantly, all of this is stemming from a one line joke—it was never a serious comment on 5g or 4k definitions. I’m surprised that you took it that way.

    WeirdGoesPro ,
    @WeirdGoesPro@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

    All that happened by design. The trend for decades has been to remove the user from the internal workings of the computer. This paved the way for expensive support packages, geek squads, and genius bars.

    If we look at cars as an example, the future of computing looks grim. Who’s to say that there won’t be leased laptops with built in features behind paywalls in the next 10 years?

    WeirdGoesPro ,
    @WeirdGoesPro@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

    Who do you think “the business” is? Lemmy is a free open source software created by volunteers. The one paid developer works for donations alone. Every instance is independently run, free of charge, and donation supported.

    Have you looked around and noticed the lack of ads, algorithms, and promoted posts? All of that is due to Lemmy not being a business.

    If you don’t want to contribute even a positive word toward other people donating what they can, then I’m really not sure what you’re doing in a brand new community driven FOSS project.

    WeirdGoesPro ,
    @WeirdGoesPro@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

    That does explain some of my bewilderment at your stances in this conversation.

    Nobody says you have to donate, but you are discouraging others to do so as well with your definitive statement of “no reason to donate”.

    In effect, if nobody donates, we are putting 100% of the pressure on about a dozen individuals who run large instances and/or who develop the software. Overbearing financial pressure like that burns out good administrators.

    Lastly, helping in any way you can is just plain neighborly. If you can’t help by donating, you can at least not discourage others from doing so. Even a “I appreciate the hard work that goes into this place” is a contribution.

    Instead, you’ve chosen to basically say “I don’t care, not my problem, I don’t care if it burns”, which is a pretty rude thing to say in a thread directed as a thank you to the people who have put in all the hard work and time to make this place.

    So, in summary, you don’t have to donate, you don’t have to care, but if you are discouraging others from caring and getting involved, you are no longer neutral, you are part of the problem.
