You're living up to your name, lol 😉

frunch ,

Yeah, things have actually gotten quite a bit better over the past 3 years. Much of that was due to the abysmal performance of his predecessor, so even a "just ok" job would have looked like a masterwork.

That said, Biden's def hitting his stride lately 😄

frunch ,

I hope this goes somewhere, but i won't hold my breath. This company is pure evil, and that's the reason i think it'll survive. They're too useful to the ruling class to destroy

frunch ,

Based on this particular comment chain and your decision to come back and read the article, i decided to read it as well. Very engaging, indeed! Learned quite a bit, def worth the time. I even subscribed to Ed's newsletter, lol

frunch ,

That seems to be the life-cycle of social forums online. The successful ones usually seem to have at least a slightly left-leaning user base, which inevitably attracts trolls/right-wingers/supremacists/etc. The trolls don't have much fun talking to each other, as they are insufferable people to begin with. It seems like a natural progression for them to seek out people they disagree with, since they have nothing else/better to do. Gab and the like are just the "safe spaces" they constantly berate everyone else for having (which they hate extra hard since their bullshit isn't accepted in those places)

frunch ,

Does this work universally or is there a particular station you frequent that it works at?

frunch ,

I really have a problem with the way this was reported: they mention vehicles falling into the water, but avoid mentioning the fact that people were still in some of those vehicles.

Another article went a bit further to explain:

"A major bridge in Baltimore in the US state of Maryland has snapped and collapsed after a container ship collided with it early on Tuesday, sending a number of vehicles into the water.

The Baltimore fire department said it was searching for at least seven people believed to be in the water, after reports that a large vessel had crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge."

There seems to be a greater concern for the inconvenience than for the people who just experienced the most terrifying event of their lives--some of whom may be dead in result
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I hope those people are rescued! I can't believe how much they were minimized by the press.

AI-generated content and other unfavorable practices have put longtime staple CNET on Wikipedia's blacklisted sources (www.tomshardware.com)

In the wave of AI controversies and lawsuits, CNET has been publicly admonished since it first started posting thinly-veiled AI-generated content on its site in late 2022— a scandal that has culminated in the site being demoted from Trusted to Untrusted Sources on Wikipedia....

frunch ,

Can you offer any alternatives? Or are there simply no trustworthy sites?

frunch ,

I always thought the advantage with Wikipedia is that you can find sources for the info right there on their site. If there's any doubt about the info on their site, it's easy enough to vet the sources. I wouldn't trust nearly any site without being able to at least do that anyway. At least in this case you can see where the info is coming from, and it's not just "trust me bro"

Sometimes that music is going harder than it has any right to though! I honestly love a lot of that shit nowadays, vaporwave brought my childhood back in a strangely welcome fashion

Google tests a feature that calls businesses on your behalf and holds until an agent is available | TechCrunch (techcrunch.com)

Google tests a feature that calls businesses on your behalf and holds until an agent is available | TechCrunch::Google is testing a feature that places a call to a business , waits on hold and then give you a call once a representative is available.

"Thank you for holding, sir. What may i do for you?"

"Actually, could you put me back on hold, that jazz station is lit "

frunch ,

Damn, that's an angle i hadn't been considering--the "AI did it, not me!" accountability loophole. Air Canada was just attempting to pull that on a customer that was given wrong info by a customer service bot. They only managed to get Air Canada to make good on their offer for bereavement rates when they were taken to court. Thanks AI!

You know you're on Lemmy, right? This is how it works here ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

frunch ,

It was an observation, but hey everyone go ahead and downvote me anyway. Happy Valentine's Day, y'all -- i love ya anyway 🥂❤️

frunch ,

Sheesh, i wonder if this guy's just a clone of me somewhere else in the world. Just about every comic I've read by them has been ridiculously on point, lol

frunch ,

Don't get on the court if you can't ball, son

frunch ,

I played in an "illegal deck" tourney many years back, probably around Fallen Empires release, so the card pool was still relatively small and power cards weren't commanding the premium they do today. The rules called for a minimum 40-card deck but no limit or restrictions to any cards. I played decks that were literally just lotuses, mountains, channels, and fireballs and i frequently lost first turn. The deck i always think about from that tourney was composed of time walks, ancestrals, timetwisters, lotuses, sapphires, rubies, and ball lightnings. He would just keep gaining cards and playing more lotuses etc, take extra turns, throw a ball lightning at you, end turn, rinse and repeat. At least it took a minute to lose the game against him, lol!

I had a crappy deck loaded with Llanowar elves, giant growths, and the 1 berzerk i had. I only found out about the tourney after i got to the show, so it was just slapped together onsite with whatever i could find from vendors. It didn't matter in the end--the deck didn't stand a chance...but I'm glad i played--even if only to see some of these stacks of rare cards getting shuffled game after game without sleeves ಠ_ಠ

And MetaCrawler!

I've been hearing Kagi is very good but i don't know if I'm ready to start paying for a search engine. Given the direction things are headed through, it could be worth considering

George Carlin Estate Files Lawsuit Against Group Behind AI-Generated Stand-Up Special: ‘A Casual Theft of a Great American Artist’s Work’ (variety.com)

George Carlin Estate Files Lawsuit Against Group Behind AI-Generated Stand-Up Special: ‘A Casual Theft of a Great American Artist’s Work’::George Carlin's estate has filed a lawsuit against the creators behind an AI-generated comedy special featuring a recreation of the comedian's voice.

frunch ,

That's a really long article to basically say that the Carlin AI stand-up was probably mostly if not entirely written by a human--but to sound like an AI. It's an impression of AI by a lousy comic (or a couple of em working together) and they decided to shit on the legacy of one of our greatest comic minds in the process. If that's the joke, i can see why nobody is laughing.

There's obviously a lot of legal grey-areas here though, so if any good comes from this it will hopefully be in the form of laws to prevent stupid shit like this flooding the Internet.

frunch ,

I'm sure those 1,000 people will have no problem finding work... Once all the other places are done with their layoffs and AI has filled in the gaps, and... Welp, maybe i have to reconsider that first statement 😬

best advice for anyone looking for work these days is to learn a trade. I'm sure the drive for unimpeded profits will eventually crater even those types of jobs through AI and automation, just not as soon.

frunch ,

Hot damn, well that's certainly not what i was trying to advise but i wasn't very specific either. On top of that, I'm in a unique position having been born in a family that would go on to start their own repair biz. I've injured myself on the job no doubt. Made big dumb expensive mistakes, to boot. Never had to expose myself to some of the risks you mentioned though, and my pay is definitely higher than that--but only after having been at it for over 20 years between apprenticing and leveling-up to professional, whenever that happened. Being self-employed is absolutely amazing though, if anyone should be fortunate enough to get a chance like i did. Can't get laid off from your own job! But you're also on the hook for your own insurances, you have to establish a good rep and uphold it, keep a current inventory, juggle appointments daily, drive a lot, paperwork aplenty, etc etc etc, the headaches are plentiful... And I'm still not getting rich doing all this work, either so it's hard to really advocate that strongly for my occupation i guess.

I think my response was more directed at how so many companies are executing layoffs lately. Aren't a lot of these people programmers as well?

frunch ,

Oh yeah, that fuck face. Glad to see someone face consequences for their actions. Hollow comfort, but I'll take it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

frunch ,

That's for kids though, talking about something for the grown ups

frunch ,

Same here! I joined lemmy right around the time my main hdd took a dump--so there was probably a bit of influence coming from here...While scrambling to get another windows installed (and encountering a bunch of obstacles along the way) i finally decided to just try Linux Mint Cinnamon. Tbh, i wasn't sure if my computer was bricked by the time i finally got mint to start up via usb. When it started working, i tried a few basic things--browsing the web, playing music, videos etc. When it all worked with a minimal amount of fuss, i decided it was time to give up windows if i could. Haven't been back to windows since!

frunch ,

(That's also when I realised my relatives never call me to share good news or to ask about me.)

I feel that in my bones, mate

In the end, that may be what she's remembered most for
