gunpachi ,

I think it's the Boost app.

gunpachi ,

Yeah boost is definitely good, it was my main app until a few months ago. Recently I have been trying Connect, which is another great app.

Connect has improved a lot since I first tried it, also doesn't have any ads. But all things considered - Boost is bit more polished than connect.

gunpachi ,

I use a firefox addon to hide shorts. works most of the time I guess.

gunpachi ,

I agree. Having loops within pixelfed makes more sense.

gunpachi ,

My msi motherboard randomly erases boot entries, I have to keep the computer on for a few minutes and reboot so that my other boot entry appears.

It maybe a problem with the m.2 slot, but it has been the case ever since I bought the motherboard.

Anyways I'm gonna stick to a different manufacturer for my motherboard if I'm building a new PC.

gunpachi ,

At that point BSD will take the place of linux I guess.

gunpachi ,

I have tried Buyvm when I was getting into selfhosting during the pandemic.

They were pretty cheap too, not sure about the pricing these days but you should take a look.

gunpachi ,

I still try interesting distros but the ones I daily drive are usually Arch or Tumbleweed (Void linux came close)

My favourite arch based distro is CachyOS so far, been working really well for me for the past 5 months or so.

gunpachi ,

Don't wait. Get Linux Mint Cinnamon / LMDE on a USB and install it.

If you don't like Debian based or Linux Mint for some reason, then check out Nobara or Fedora KDE spin. EndeavourOS is also great.

gunpachi ,

I daily drive Window managers but occasionally I also check out Desktop environments. Here is my personal preference -

DE

  1. XFCE
  2. KDE
  3. Cinnamon

WM

  1. Hyprland
  2. BSPWM
  3. Openbox / Labwc
gunpachi ,

Thats a cool feature for sure but I don't trust opera.

gunpachi ,

Dualboot works well for people especially if they play games like Valorant and LoL which has rootkit anticheat.

gunpachi , (edited )

The Xfce logo looks like it's for rat poison.

gunpachi ,

My first distro was ubuntu 11.04 if I remember correctly.

gunpachi ,

Can you suggest me some alternatives to SimpleLogin ? Would appreciate it if its free to use, as my usage is very basic.

gunpachi ,

Do yourself a favour and try opensuse tumbleweed. You won't regret it.

Also even on arch things doesn't break unless the user installs a whole lot of stuff from the AUR. Since there are flatpaks around most people can get their day to day apps working without relying on community repos.

gunpachi ,

You do have a point, but each App's play store page itself shows whether it has ads or in-app purchases. One can use that as an indicator for selecting an app. So people just need to pay attention to the small text right below the App's title

example

Then there is always f-droid . You can find really good quality software without ads in fdroid. I rarely use the play store these days (except when I have to update whatsapp and banking apps)
