The headline/title needs to be extended to include the rest of the sentence

"and then sent them to a minor"

Yes, this sicko needs to be punished.
Any attempt to make him the victim of " the big bad government" is manipulative at best.

Edit: made the quote bigger for better visibility.

helpImTrappedOnline ,

Simulated crimes aren't crimes.

If they were, any one who's played games is fucked. I'm confident everyone who has played went on a total ramapage murdering the townfolk, pillaging their houses and blowing everything up....in Minecraft.

helpImTrappedOnline ,

Nor do I believe in Santa Claus, the tooth fairy, or the Easter bunny.

How we supposed to get people to switch to Linux with this guy spouting nonsense? /s

helpImTrappedOnline ,

With a comment like that, she ain't one the good ones.

helpImTrappedOnline ,

Large capacity drives are good for backups, especially if you're backing a lot of media, such as a DVD/Bluray collection.

So they're protective of their OWN media libraries, but when its customers libraries "fuck em"

I think you're missing the point.

The google service that is being used for the airtag alert is one of the main ones google uses to track you. Many privacy conscious individuals have disabled this service.

Now the choice is

A) disable service to prevent google from spying on you, but risk being tracked by an airtag.

B) keep the service to prevent being tracked by an airtag, but also allow google to spy on you.

Its a loose-loose scenario.

Apple crushes creativity and its reputation in new iPad ad (www.theregister.com)

The ad itself depicted a mechanical crusher destroying artifacts of human creativity. A trumpet, guitar, sculpture, piano, drawing board, paints, a metronome, several analog cameras, a turntable, and hi-fi equipment were among the much-loved items yielding to the machine's unstoppable force.

helpImTrappedOnline ,

This whole outcry is a joke.

They're symbolizing all the creative things, that they just talked about, that you can do with the iPad.

If you got Apple is "destroying creativity" from that, you A) only saw the clip or B) are searching for problem.

helpImTrappedOnline ,

"Oh no they crushed a bunch of random things and it represents the descturction of culture"
What a joke

helpImTrappedOnline ,

Just because it hasn't happened yet, doesn't mean it won't slowly be added over the next 5-10 years.

Making Laws/rules doesn't need to wait for a bad to happen.

helpImTrappedOnline ,

Anybody else come here curious about actual 12ft ladder alternatives and why they wouldn't work on sites anymore?

helpImTrappedOnline ,

While I like the idea, unfortuanlty, that is bad for the environment. We are better off driving them into recycling plants to put the battieires and other materials towards something useful.

helpImTrappedOnline ,

They're a solution looking to solve a problem that already has a well established better solution.
The modern smart phone and voice assistats have been around for 14+ years....

For all these Ai devices can currently accomplish, our budget $200 phones can do an unmeasurable amount more.

If anyrhing, they should be focusing on the voice assistant aspect - "Hey google, add nearest gas station to my trip" "Here's a list of gas stations (I know you're driving but please review this list and select one using the tiny select button)" {presses button} "Please enable location data analytics to continue"

helpImTrappedOnline ,

Was the 6 the one with 3D Touch? If so, you actually lost a feature.

helpImTrappedOnline ,

Seems we're both right.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Force_Touch

The 6 and 6s had 3d touch, while 10 has Force Touch

Too bad win 12 is on track to break the streak.

Seems like they're on track to break the streak with Windows 12.

Honestly, I'd rather see the focus on making it so we can transfer purchases across app stores/devices.

So many people get stuck with one manufacture because they baught some apps over the years and don't want to buy them again.

Even just making the stores talk to eachother would be enough. If I add my Google account to the Apple App Store, the app store can pull the list of purchased compatible software from the play store and sync it with my apple library.

Throw things like the xbox store and PlayStation store into the mix too. To be clear, that doesn't mean exclusives or incompatible things needs to be compatible, thats silly. But if I buy somethibg like cross- platform like BG3 on the PlayStation, I want to transfer that to the Xbox or PC if I change consoles.

helpImTrappedOnline ,

Most developers won't care unless they have their own store.
If I'm sony and want my games to stay on PlayStation that fine.

If I'm a indi game dev (or one who isnt owned by MS yet), I want my game to be cross-platform to maximize potential sales, great. In 2 years, if one my PlayStation sales wants to jump to Xbox, they're unlikely to re-buy my game again. They'll just forget about it or pirate it, so I'm not really loosing a sale.

For a lot PC software, you buy a license from the developer directly and if they offer a cross-platform software, they dont care if you're on windows or mac. They might care about how many activations you have, but that's about it. There is no app store middle man.

On pixel, if you ever need to - press and hold the power button, select "lockdown".

(It might apply to other androids too, I don't know.)

You will now need a pin to unlock the phone. This disables the lock screen shortcut (camera, light, etc) as well.

Why disable your convence features for an scenerio that is not likely and can be quickly and easily be prevented.

Universal: You could also just the tap the sensor with a "wrong" finger a few time, and the pin will be required.

Maybe don't do this one in front the cops...if you find your self in a postion where they are trying to unlock your phone, you probably don't want to piss them off.
.

Edit: I'm surprised no one called me out on "if you're ever need to".
The sentence was going to be "if you're even in a situation that needs...", but that was getting too long. Forgot to change you're to you.

helpImTrappedOnline ,

My 5a sensor is fantastic (it is on the back). I'll be sad when it's time for this phone to go.

Elon Musk says it's his turn to have the remote (www.engadget.com)

[Xitter] just announced a smart TV app for streaming video. Or, more accurately, that it claims it's building one, with absolutely no launch date mentioned. The appropriately-named [Xitter] TV wants to be “your go-to companion for a high-quality, immersive entertainment experience on a larger screen.”

helpImTrappedOnline ,

I read that as Fiskars first, and thought noo not the scissor company! But all is good, just another EV startup gone flop.

helpImTrappedOnline ,

AI, or LLM, that doesn't know what to do. Hell no.

An automatic system that takes in human input (that's already sent to the gov via our employer), does some calculations and returns a result to us so that it can be verified and adjusted as needed by a human? Yes please.

helpImTrappedOnline ,

Be careful, you'll need to keep up on vacuuming around the display, or you'll have tiny diodes scattered all the place.

Also wear safety googles while viewing. Occasionally the diodes shoot our far, especially if there's a sudden white flash on screen.

Ask: How do you handle your résumés?

Usually I rely on my network & haven’t needed this kind of document in ages, but I’ve been tasked with creating a résumé for myself. I’ve grown more privacy-conscious every year & I think it’s weird that we are expected to give out so much information about ourselves to companies that lie about their culture & don’t...

helpImTrappedOnline ,

Maybe they are pretentious and applying to a pretentious inistute of prestige. Any resume without an é is immediately burnt in a fancy fireplace and the applicant is shunned from the pretentious society forever.
Its possible, right?

Skyrim is 12 years old...

(It will be 13 in November, a teenager...oh god, get ready for the rebellious phase.)

Edit, I did not watch the video, which is about Fallout. The meme was made for Skyrim.

helpImTrappedOnline ,

Those SSD are both hardware and software locked to the mother board. Once the SSD goes, the whole machine goes.
The same can be said about RAM...once that goes, the mother board does too.

Perhaps the goal is to use the SSD as a sacrifice in order to extend the life of the obviously more important RAM.

helpImTrappedOnline ,

I know. I wrote it as a crap excuse. The SSD that stores user data is infinitly more important than RAM.

helpImTrappedOnline ,

They might not specifically software lock the drive, but I do recall somethibg about them enabling disk encryption by default. So you're data is essentially tied to the system.

https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/protect-data-on-your-mac-with-filevault-mh11785/mac
It is enabled automatically, and unless you actually know to store the key somewhere you're fucked.

Buy YouTube Premium with your hard earned money so you can feel good about a few extra pennies going towards your beloved creators.
We'll keep the rest of your precious money for ourselves to bring you new and exciting features you never asked for -

  • you'll get exclusive acess to the ever growing library of YouTube Originals, because we felt it necessary to take the "You" out of YouTube and sponsor our own content for you to enjoy.
  • We'll bring more pixels to you with real time 4K video streaming. Now you can enjoy one of the 6 channels that actually record in 4k in beautiful life like quality on your tiny phone, the 13 year old computer screen you rescued from your work dumpster or your smart 4K TV that doesn't have a WiFi card fast enough to get all the pixels for a buttery smooth expirence.
  • Next we'll bring you Live TV straight to your eyes from across the globe. Ditch those pesky cable bills and pay for our ever growing selection of unwilling particpents as the affordability of streaming destroys traditional cable for the low monthly cost of $57.99 for the first 3 months. As a bonus, our website doesn't bother to tell you if it includes any the other YouTube Premium features - you might just end up paying for premium twice and we have no real obligation to tell you.
  • Finally, we've thought of the little ones with our special version of YouTube for Kids, called YouTube Kids. Here we use an advanced AI system of people who can find the report button to filter out any content we decide goes against our ever changing guidelines. We allow your children to only watch the most mind numbing, cheaply made, addicitive garbage to keep them ocupied while you do more important things than raising your child.

We know the real reason you're here is YouTube Music. Access our huge library of every song that we haven't been forced to take down because some studio decided they wanted their cut. We'll entice you to spend a few more dollars than what you pay for just YouTube Music to get ad-free YouTube videos and the revolutionary ability to play music in the background on your mobile phone. That's right, we've developed a method in which you can listen to music at the same you binge read cringy fanfiction novels at 3 in the morning. It's revolutionary.

Still not convinced, lastly we added in the amazing feature called offline viewing. This will download the videos you select to your device offline in an encrypted format so hackers can't steal them from you, allowing you to watch them anywhere, provided you have an internet connection so we can verify you downloaded the videos.

Buy YouTube Premium today, and buy it again every month, for the low price of your daughter's medium latte macchiato coffe milkshake with extra caramel, whipped cream and a cute bright red40 cherry on top.

helpImTrappedOnline ,

Ha, glad you enjoyed it.

I've tweaked it a bit. Now featuring - improved grammar, an ending and a few more jabs at YouTube.

helpImTrappedOnline ,

My schools blocker used to block their own site from time to time.
I wouldnt really call it stupidity, school IT or the vendor (im sure they payed some absurd amout for the service) would tweak the filter and the school site would get flagged.

helpImTrappedOnline ,

The IRS is (supposedly) under funded. That's (supposedly) why they can't actually go after the rich people and business. They can't afford the legal fees.

The reason there's no federals site is corporate lobbying. You see if there was federal site, business like Turbo Tax and HR Block would fail. They convinced the government "let us take care of the online platform", the gov said "okay, but as long as you make a free service for low income people".

Then the corps branded the free version a different name, burried it and advertised the paid one. Then they filled the service with all kinds of dark patterns to get people to pay for crap they don't need. Government hasn't done anything about it.

helpImTrappedOnline ,

I see you're playing with the slevless outfit mods.

helpImTrappedOnline ,

What apps and links please?
Just so I know what not to download.

(Yes I know its in the article...)

helpImTrappedOnline ,

Huh, I didnt expect to see Intel or Realtek stuff in there.

The iCloud one is funny and oddly specific. Its like a "fuck you for using both Apple and Facebook crap"

helpImTrappedOnline ,

I got a nice prebuilt relativly cheap in 21, but the case had 1 fan in front. I immediately swapped everything to a case with many fans.

helpImTrappedOnline ,

Check out DeArrow. Made by same person to crowd source non-click bait titles and thumbnails (using a screen shot from the video).

"You won't belive this new gadget can do this" -> "review of (product name)"

"I ate 100 hotdogs in a day!" -> "Mr. Beast knock-off wonders the streets and eats 3 hotdogs at a few street shops."

helpImTrappedOnline ,

Now we just need people to stop abusing the "highlight/get to the point" option.

Its great for "listen to my whole life story before I tell you how to fix this super obscure computer problem"

Not so great for "watch me build this cool table" skips to the final result.

helpImTrappedOnline ,

I know, I'm just being picky. Someone likes to skip right to the end for a channel I watch every video, where the 'journey' is the intresting part.

helpImTrappedOnline ,

I like that they choose the least convincing fake pictures.
Its not really helping their argument.

helpImTrappedOnline ,

Next pannel:

Left twin beats the kid for no reason.

Right twin: "I told you."

helpImTrappedOnline ,

Na, some of us still deal with these style connectors. Not so much for video, but it's still used for rs-232 (control signal) and other data. They are great when you dont want the connector to ever fall out.
