The videos are not very relevant to the topic of privacy and our freedom.

Today it might be "extreme anarchy: how to make homemade bombs and guns". On the surface, its a great idea, go stop those people.

However, next year it could be something rediculous like "how to rip CDs".
Clearly you must be pirating, time to fine you $500 or put you through a more costly legal battle trying to prove grandpa's 20 years of CDs were all obtained legally. Wow look at all the free money we just made because most will eat the $500 over hiring a lawyer. What else can we "fine" for?

The idea that the government could use your internet history against you, with no other factors, is as absurd as wire tapping someone and waiting for them to say something they don't like.

helpImTrappedOnline ,

Already better then the Willy Wonka one. This one has real sand!

helpImTrappedOnline ,

Comparing expecations (based on the ad) to reality; this is still miles ahead.

helpImTrappedOnline ,

Umm uhhhh they'll have to increase the total price to make up the difference in processing more numbers which will cause the employee budget to decrease hurting the local economy which means less taxes to fund fire department and your babies will burn in a fire caused by the unqualified cable tech they had to hire to offset the loss in profits.

helpImTrappedOnline ,

The smart people may have started it, but the dumb people listened and took it as gospel.

helpImTrappedOnline , (edited )

Agreed. Its a list.
Anyone can make a list of people. They can even put people they've never met on the list.

I can make a list, put your name on it, label "bad people" and leave it for the FBI to find. Does that prove you're bad?

For those who have truley committed the crimes suggested by the "list", I vote for a beheading (not the one attached to the neck).

There's the normal suck, then there's "I (been there 12 years) got passed up for promotion to replace my boss who retired because the owner's nephew who worked with us for a few years (sucked and "volentarely" left 6 years ago) decided their cyptoscheme wasn't working out and needed a job, and that was the highest one paying one avalible."

Or the "Sally got verably harassed dailiy and they did nothing because the harrasser has been there 30 years. 'He's just an old man in his early 50s, older gentlemen call ladies nicknames like sweetcakes, honey, or cutie all the time. They also like to rub peoples shoulders to show affec to help relive the tension and promote a healthier work environment' "

The search and thread managment would be a nightmare, no? You'd need a thread for every company (larger ones needing multiple split by department or location).

There's probably a hundred business with in a mile of me.
Even if you splinter communities by location, the search would be difficult.

helpImTrappedOnline ,

That 'article' is garbage. The headline is more imformative than the actual article.

Nokia, of course, leaned into, ahem, patent licensing and networking equipment as its business.....

Who puts "ahem, in an informational article?

Also how is "patent licensing" a part their new buisness. They submit patents for whatever they're doing just like everyone else.

"Welcome to your new job Private. Here we run a fully automatic system. You just need to watch this screen and let me know if there are any issues with the bleeps, the sweeps or the creeps. Got that?"

helpImTrappedOnline ,

Well on the bright side, these things will start learning from reddit. More garbage for us to chuckle at.

helpImTrappedOnline ,

How about they colabortate on a messegaing standard instead?

You know those movies were the main character blinks and their stuff gets stolen? That's pretty much true in some of the cities.

Also if someone is asking you for gas money, help at the atm, trying to sell you something random - leave.

lemmy.one/c/scams seems to have a lot of the common ones listed. It might be worth lurking on r/scams to see if there's anything more current to watch out for.

Microsoft is once again injecting pop-up ads into Google Chrome on Windows in a bid to get people to switch to Bing (www.theverge.com)

The software giant first introduced malware-like pop-up ads last year with a prompt that appeared over the top of other apps and windows. After pausing that notification to address “unintended behavior,” the pop-ups have returned again on Windows 10 and 11....

helpImTrappedOnline ,

malware like popup ads

What the difference between a virus and window? A virus is well maintained by its creator.

Does it support sponser block? Its kind of needed with many of the sponsers spots now pushing 2+ minutes for a 10 minute video.

Amazon's Hidden Chatbot Recommends Nazi Books and Lies About Amazon Working Conditions (www.404media.co)

An Amazon chatbot that’s supposed to surface useful information from customer reviews of specific products will also recommend a variety of racist books, lie about working conditions at Amazon, and write a cover letter for a job application with entirely made up work experience when asked, 404 Media has found.

helpImTrappedOnline ,

Can we please stop with these stories about "AI chatbot has grabage output"?
We know that. Let me know when they work.

helpImTrappedOnline ,

When the early superman and batman movies came out, they were great.
Even the first ironman was great for the time...the problem is they have been mass producing the same movie every year for the last 13? years.

Just report this as clickbait and let the mods remove it. If Roku didnt get hacked, then that title has no reason to be here.

Replace title with "hakers use leaked passwords to access thousands of Roku accounts" and you have yourself a keeper.

died at the age of 68, Dragon Ball's Creator Akira Toriyama apparently had a dark side as a child (worldnews.infoterkiniviral.com)

The legendary manga artist, Akira Toriyama, passed away at the age of 68, leaving behind an unforgettable legacy of work for his fans worldwide. However, behind his illustrious success and creativity, it has been revealed that Toriyama had a childhood filled with challenges and darkness....

Extremely limited with details

You're being too generous. Substitute only the name and this text could be applied to anyone. There's zero details here.

helpImTrappedOnline ,

We're gatekeeping feeling sad that someone died now?
People feel sad that the creator of one of their favorite shows died and are expressing that online, no need to bully them over it.

Not mentioning someone in their profiles doesn't prove anything. I don't mention any of my family, does that mean I won't care when they pass?

How do you expect them to support the creator? Fly to Japan, shake his hand and give him 50 bucks? If they watch the show and share their enjoyment of it with others - they are supporting the creator.

helpImTrappedOnline ,

I do hope in time more niche communities will pop up.
As long as people stay active, the less lazy (or those with more free time) will make the little communities we miss.

Spy Family is a good one to try. Its about a make shift family between a spy, an assiasn and a young kid who can read minds. They all have to keep their true identities secret from eachother in fear of losing their cover family.

Good from the start, good in the middle and on track to be good in the end.

A lot of anime is goofy and absurd and you have to roll with it. Some good ones will have a seemingly goofy premise but end up dark as hell and keep you up at night.

If you want somethibg more relaxing and less time commitment, the Studio Ghibli movies are good. The art and stories are great. Most of the movies don't have a predominant villain, but are more about personal challenges and the characters growing to overcome whatever the outside problem is.
"My Neighbor Totoro", "Ponyo" and "Spirited Away" are great examples of this.

"Castle in the sky" is fun.
If you like action spy/theif type movies "Lupin III Castle of Cagliostro" is a good one from the 70's.

Like american/western shows, there's a lot of garabage mixed in, and sometime even the popular stuff might not be to your taste. (I never got into dragon ball, despite it being one of the most popular anime)

Sorry didnt mean to make a long post, just started typing ideas.....

helpImTrappedOnline ,

Yeah, I meant to give one maybe two ideas...then I went overboard. Sorry about that.
I did at least avoid anything that took 7 seasons to "get good".

helpImTrappedOnline ,

Not too worried, but appricate the reply.

I added a lot of text to each thing when I read someone else say something like "recomendations without giving any reason to watch are annoying", and I thought good point!

helpImTrappedOnline ,

Dont worry, I tried it and it's not well thought out.
After taking an absurd amount of time to set up, it only works with the amazon store or sketchy 3rd party tools to let you side load.

It'd be a lot better if the paired up with Google play store, so purchased apps actually transfer and allowed side loading out of the box.

helpImTrappedOnline ,

Probably no. But in a perfect better world we wouldn't be tied to app stores at all.

helpImTrappedOnline ,

You're broken? I though the question was going to be something along the lines of "why are the dicks so small?

helpImTrappedOnline ,

(I use KeepassXC)

I use the notes section alot. I can store all kinds of related info.
For example on sites that still use a username to login, I can put the email I used to sign up in the notes section.

I'll also do security questions answers here. Using a pasphrase generator for those is good. No one is going to check if your first dog's name really was "consoling-roving-activator-earflap" and no one can find it on your over sharing grandma's Facebook.

I'll also attach any license keys/relevant files for software, now those stay encrypted and backed up with the database instead of in a random folder of text files.

Not when you only buy new socks when the olds ones are beyond rescue....or you buy the same socks again and mix em up.

helpImTrappedOnline ,

Mix them all!!!

At first its easy to tell which is which, so naturally you'll gravitate towards the new ones leaving the old in the back of the drawer. After a year so, they'll all look the same.

What can you get to within a 15-minute walk of your house?

A recent YouGov survey asked Americans what they think they should be able to get to within a 15-minute walk of their house.

Of these choices, I can currently walk to all of them from my apartment, aside from a university (no biggie, I'm not currently studying, although there is a Tafe within walking distance), a hospital, and a sports arena.

How many can you get to with a 15 minute walk from your house?

@fuck_cars

helpImTrappedOnline ,

Yeah, gas stations kind of covers the convenience/grocery store need. I like the ones that feel like the store is the main business, and gas is the side hustle.

helpImTrappedOnline ,

I started on the windows 95/XP, but still hit Ctrl+s after every few sentences. It's just part of typing to me. It confuses google docs when I try to save out of habit.

helpImTrappedOnline ,

Honestly, let's make it mainstream.
Get it to a point where it's more profitable to mass produce Ai porn than exploit young women from god knows where.

helpImTrappedOnline ,

Taking a family photo seems like it'd be within the spirit of the rule.

Staging it so the teens look sad is the second most likely scenario.

Most likely is they staged the photo and made up the discount caption for internet points.

helpImTrappedOnline ,

No never, not at all. I read online somewhere that the internet cannot tell a lie.

I love my alarm app, AMdroid.

Has all kinds of challenge things I don't use (but probably should), but I do use the post alarm function.

5 minutes after I dismiss the alarm, I'll get a notification asking if I'm awake. If I don't respond in another 5 mins, a louder more obnoxious alarm will go off. Its like having multiple alarms, but with out the need to set/disable all the extras.

Also each time I snooze, the time gets 2 minutes shorter. 10mins, 8, 6, 4, 2...

helpImTrappedOnline ,

Unfortunately, it isn't FOSS, and even has paid features.

If your model is 100% FOSS, no luck.
If you dont care:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.amdroidalarmclock.amdroid

Location data is used for location based alarms.
If I recall, in the free version, the ads were just a banner at the bottom, (nothing stupid like "watch video to snooze", although the rage would definitely wake you up).

The recent reviews seem low, not sure what that's about, I haven't had any issues on my pixel 5a, android 14. They also complain about no backup/restore despite it being the 4th item in the settings menu, so take that as you will. My guess is they didn't set it to unrestricted battery usage or display over other apps (to get it to appear when the screen is locked).

Looking at the logs, its only internet access has been google APIs

If you're worried about it, get netgaurd and block all it from all WiFi/cell activity. I'm guessing it will only affect location and "the WiFi signal strength challage".
