Exactly. Neckbeards love to pretend open source magically has no security vulnerabilities, and that the ability to inspect the source means you'll never install anything nefarious.

I expect all of them to have read the source for every single package they've ever installed. Oh and the Linux source too, of course

hydroptic ,

And this technology is what our executive overlords want to replace human workers with, just so they can raise their own compensation and pay the remaining workers even less

hydroptic ,

This combined with the meteoric rise of fascism absolutely leave me thinking that I'll probably end up in a concentration camp

hydroptic ,

I doubt there's any sort of 4D chess going on, instead of the whole thing being brought about by short-sighted executives who feel like they have to do something to show that they're still in the game exactly because they're so much behind "Open"AI

hydroptic ,

This shit is so bad that even a blind guy can see it.

You severely underestimate the shortsightedness of the executive class. They're usually so convinced of their infallibility that they absolutely will make decisions that are obviously terrible to anyone looking in from the outside

hydroptic OP ,

OP isn't going to give you an exact age, but OP is much closer to 46 than 40

hydroptic ,

The vast majority of AI Overviews provide high quality information

According to some fuckwitted Google rep, and I wouldn't trust them any further than I could throw them.

Musk, the employees said, was not pleased with Tinucci’s presentation and wanted more layoffs. When she balked, saying deeper cuts would undermine charging-business fundamentals, he responded by firing her and her entire 500-member team.

The dude's a petulant child. No wonder conservatives fawn over him.

At least here in the EU the ePrivacy directive and to a lesser extent the GDPR generally require that cookies have a limited lifetime depending on their function, to eg. prevent companies just attaching a stable identifier to every random passerby essentially forever. @Sunny, if you're feeling particularly mildly infuriated you could email the German Data Protection Authority, there's a good chance the cookie could attract the Eye of Sauron

hydroptic ,

Sure! This page has some general info: https://gdpr.eu/cookies/

The directive itself is kind of involved because it goes pretty deep into what its aim is and eg. what sort of information can be considers an identifier, and it's actually quite well argued and worth a read if that sort of thing is your, er, thing: https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/ALL/?uri=CELEX%3A32002L0058 (you need to scoll aaalll the way down to be able to show the body text). I had to deal with this stuff professionally when I was a CTO for a company with some stricter than average privacy requirements due to the field, and I was pleasantly surprised to find out how much sense ePrivacy and GDPR actually make

hydroptic ,

Which is why I said to contact the German DPA

hydroptic ,

MIT license too, huh. I was sort of expecting a more restrictive one because, well, Microsoft and IBM

Something being ancient and irrelevant tdoesn't stop a lot of companies.

“Ethnically cleanse,” he said at one point, summing up his idea for a city purged of Blues (this, he says, will prevent Blues from ethnically cleansing the Grays first).

Conservatives are incredibly fucked up. They can't fathom coexisting with people who aren't like them without wanting to "ethnically cleanse" them, so they naturally assume everybody else thinks like this as well

Breakthrough promises secure and private quantum computing at home (www.physics.ox.ac.uk)

The full power of next-generation quantum computing could soon be harnessed by millions of individuals and companies thanks to a breakthrough by scientists at Oxford’s Department of Physics guaranteeing security and privacy. The advance promises to unlock the transformative potential of cloud-based quantum computing and is...

Murder fits reich-wing values just fine. Consensual sex, gay or otherwise, doesn't.

hydroptic OP ,

Ha, that's interesting. In some sense you've been a part of the history of computing.

Glad you liked the video! You might also enjoy Alexander's video about how the Apollo Guidance Computer got turned into the world's first digital fly-by-wire system: Digital Fly-By-Wire: The Apollo Guidance Computer's final gift to the world

It's wild that it apparently took up quite a chunk of an FV APC's interior space:

Interesting that the program had to be loaded every time it was switched on, so it didn't have any permanent storage.

Recluse houses are better for debaucherous parties of all types anyway.

All houses are great for debaucherous parties of all types! Your neighbours may not agree but they need to loosen up, maybe join one of those debaucherous parties for once

hydroptic ,

If they were capable of being educated they wouldn't be a conservative bigot in the first place

hydroptic ,

Why would I change your mind‽

hydroptic , (edited )

Some people can change.

I congratulate you on becoming a better person, but I've given up trying to educate conservatives. Every single conservative I personally know has only gotten worse over the years, and the last straw for me was when I had one who self-identifies as a "moderate conservative" flat out tell me that he wishes gender and sexual minorities didn't exist, and that he thinks the mere existence of these minorities is "polarizing" and makes him feel uncomfortable.

So yes, while I fully acknowledge that it's possible for conservatives to unfuck themselves and that being dismissive of them definitely won't help, I'm just so past trying to be the better person when all I get back is shit like thinly veiled wishes for a "final solution". I'm so fucking tired of the onus being on progressives for trying to make conservatives better people, when so many of them want to literally murder us queers

Edit: I realized I know one conservative who did actually become a good person eventually. He used to be a straight-up neo-Nazi too (and I'm not being hyperbolic here, he actually self-identified as one) which makes it all the more impressive

hydroptic ,

Anybody who's worked in computer repair has probably had to deal with this fish person

Edit: fixed stupid

hydroptic ,

Or, you know, don't use Windows

hydroptic ,

Ah, anti-cheat problems? Feels like those are nearly the only ones that won't play nice with Proton nowadays

hydroptic ,

Yeah, for men the likely worst case scenario is embarrassment, women can get straight-up beaten or murdered

hydroptic ,

How common exactly is someone getting arrested for sexual harrassment just for asking a woman out?

hydroptic , (edited )

I'm going to assume you're asking in good faith even though you could have just googled "woman killed for rejecting man" (or something similar) yourself to find that out, but here's the top results for that query – meaning that these are absolutely not the only cases but just the top ones on the first page of the results:

Naturally you can claim they're lies, or exaggerations etc., but it really should be clear that this is a common phenomenon.

How many articles can you find to support the claim that men routinely get sexual harrassment charges for rejecting a woman's advances? And do you think it's comparable to getting literally murdered? And note that this is just the murders: other forms of abuse after rejection are also common

hydroptic , (edited )

regular, reasonable guys don’t like the idea of asking out a woman who’s immediately afraid he’ll kill her if she says no, not just because they don’t like the idea of potentially making her uncomfortable just by approaching her, but also because even if she says yes, a relationship that has that level of fear or distrust right off the bat is doomed.

You'll have to excuse my language, but this just pissed me right the fuck off.

Frankly this is a load of bullshit and not a description of how anyone reasonable actually acts. Women getting murdered for rejecting men's approaches is incredibly common, and you're fucking placing the blame on women for fuck's sake. Jesus christ this is just so fucking infuriating. Reasonable men should understand that if they're not a goddamn murderer then they should be fine.

I made another comment with a list of the top results I got for "woman killed for rejecting man", which should hopefully drive the point home that this actually is a scarily common problem that women face – the fact that your little fucking feefees get hurt by the idea that women can be wary of men making advances is inconsequential.

Poe's Law and all that; conservative opinions are nearly universally idiotic enough that it's hard to tell them apart from parody / sarcasm

LINE GO UP! This is good for economy! You want line to go up don't you? If you don't, you let the communists win

The first thing that popped into my head when I saw that "fence" is Tengwar:

The elves must really hate dyslexics

That indeed is the joke, yes

hydroptic , (edited )

Ha, true, it can be almost as hairy as Tengwar especially if you write nonsense. Quick, name all the letters:

Ok that's hilarious.

In a few decades maybe it'll officially be "keming"

hydroptic ,

At least shapewise it's like close-ish; the one that really gets my goat is how the fuck does т turn into m.
