"Digital sovereignty": German federal state of Schleswig-Holstein ditches Microsoft for Linux and Open Source alternatives (blog.documentfoundation.org)

Schleswig-Holstein, the northern German federal state, will be a digital pioneer region and the first German state to introduce a digitally sovereign IT workplace in its state administration. With a cabinet decision to introduce the open-source software LibreOffice as the standard office solution across the board, the government...

What's an app vendor here? Or what does that mean in general? I feel like one of the reasons given on other (failed) attempts to switch to libre software has been that other public places / ministries etc still using MS had incompatibilities with e. g. Munich's FOSS stack. Though I think this is something you could overcome if you wanted to, it's not like these problems don't exist (and probably have solutions) elsewhere. I think FOSS software has come pretty far in the last years, I haven't booted my Windows partition in months, so I have a tiny bit of hope that they can make it work.

Those two apparently don't allow law enforcement access to their databses (yet?) even though I seem to remember they do. But others do:

I'm using the intro-skipping-plugin (has no credits-skipping, I think?) and it's working very well for me.

jlow ,
@jlow@beehaw.org avatar

Aaaaahhh, yeah, didn't think about that 😓

I think they're looking for a new maintainer for the Android version, hopefully they'll find one but don't depend on it too much

jlow ,
@jlow@beehaw.org avatar

I've heard that the one Home Assistant is making is also pretty good

jlow ,

The article goes a bit into the tests that were done and what scientists thought, from skimming it I'd say the results where inconclusive:

Super hard to tell without further info / screenshots. So they're sorted by release(?) and those are correct in the metadata but it still sorts them wrong?

jlow ,
@jlow@beehaw.org avatar

Lol and here I was being naive and precious thinking it would be because it some (probably made-up) health-concerns, when they're all just puppets of the meat-industry. Scary.

Another hint are the people in typical French Haute Couture.

Liked the article but the end was kind of a letdown for me. If capitalism-driven AI is ruining the web even further why would demanding that AI is better today already and not in the future help with any of the problems this article has described?

For me the solution is obvioisly rejecting corpo-spam social-networks and going back to the selfmade small-internet, the fediverse etc. Sure that's not a solution for humanity as a whole but neither is demanding better AI now.

Are have I completely misunderstood something?

jlow ,
@jlow@beehaw.org avatar

Ok, yeah, but I still think that totally misses the point. At least for me even fully functional AI will still be a desaster and would be used for the most heinous stuff, eroding democracy worldwide even more and it obviously changes nothing of the social-media-silo capitalist hellscape most people live in comfortably (or less comfortably if it gives you eating disorders, depression and stuff).

Is osmand normally terrible?

I just tried osmand. It took forever to locate me and then the map would freeze for minutes, then the blue arrow would finally jump to my location. It seems useless for real time navigation, is that normal? Google maps works fine on the phone (Android) so it's not the hardware. Is there maybe some setting I haven't found?...

jlow ,
@jlow@beehaw.org avatar

Been using Osmand as my only source for navigation for years and years, it's not perfect but far better for me than what you're experiencing ...

jlow ,
@jlow@beehaw.org avatar

Yeah, you can export multiple-page PDFs and https://floss.social/@doctormo is working on revamping how it's handling colour so we will eventually get propper CMYK support and other cool stuff

jlow ,
@jlow@beehaw.org avatar

Overkill for this but just wanted to mention

stirlingtools.com/ (self-hosted PDF magic)

jlow ,
@jlow@beehaw.org avatar

Yeah, there are some nice articles from the BBC on this, including one with the person playing that masked-character. The dialogue/story for actresses/actors was apparently LLM-gibberish as well.

jlow ,
@jlow@beehaw.org avatar

Also of you can stand the quality check out DVDs in charity shops or second hand online (Ebay etc). (And give away / resell after you made a "backup".)

jlow ,
@jlow@beehaw.org avatar

Yeah, fair, but depending on where you are you're already in illegal territory if you're circumventing DRM on the discs (e. g. Germany, I think).

(And how likely is it that I 1. get busted for pirating when not torrenting/downloading and 2. will make the copyright trolls believe me that I actually legally bought this movie at a charity shop five years ago? Has that ever hapenend?)

jlow ,
@jlow@beehaw.org avatar

And Scribus +___+ (And Open Camera.)

jlow ,
@jlow@beehaw.org avatar

Oh, that's cool (but trick play is not a very good for that, wth).

jlow ,
@jlow@beehaw.org avatar

Argh, I wanted to say it's not a very good name for that. I did not really understand what that's supposed to mean (English is not my first language) but now I think it might be those books you can flip through very fast and it'll be a very simple animation? That would make sense.

jlow ,
@jlow@beehaw.org avatar

I would also replace the harddrive with an SSD (and maybe replace it (mini) pc once you can afford it). With a Pi you run your OS from an sd-card which can work for some time but isn't ideal from what I've heard.

jlow ,
@jlow@beehaw.org avatar

Check out the BBC podcast on the One Coin scam, it's beyond me how these people can live with having destroyed so many lifes (yes, I know how, by hallucinating a world where they're the good guys):

jlow ,
@jlow@beehaw.org avatar

That is interesting because writing documentation and onboarding users is something people without coding skills can do and for me it (still) feels like I need to know how to code to help with projects. Nice.

Faster backup solution?

I use Beyond Compare to sync files from my laptop to my NAS which is a QNAP (my laptop is Linux Mint). It is incredibly slow, to the point that it is driving me crazy. Admittedly, I have lots of large files on my laptop that I move around frequently, so that may just be how it is. I do have my laptop setup to sync to my phone...

jlow ,
@jlow@beehaw.org avatar

Be aware that syncing is not a backup (if you have not specifically set up one way sync). If something goes very wrong and you loose or corrupt data on the main machine corrupt files may be synced (or files deleted from the "backup" machine as well).

@jlow@beehaw.org avatar

Oh wow, what a nightmare. So lucky she has you, I'm always a little sad thinking how awful it must (and apparently is) be for people who don't have resident nerd doing this kind of stuff for them.

Good luck!

jlow ,
@jlow@beehaw.org avatar

Oooof, that's so scary. The problem is obviously that if nothing goes wrong now it'll confirm his believe that it was no big deal ...

jlow ,
@jlow@beehaw.org avatar

So 416 mph, not bad. That good olde made-up paleo diet, right?

What can you get to within a 15-minute walk of your house?

A recent YouGov survey asked Americans what they think they should be able to get to within a 15-minute walk of their house.

Of these choices, I can currently walk to all of them from my apartment, aside from a university (no biggie, I'm not currently studying, although there is a Tafe within walking distance), a hospital, and a sports arena.

How many can you get to with a 15 minute walk from your house?

@fuck_cars

jlow ,
@jlow@beehaw.org avatar

I would love this being contrasted with what they get on average, it would probably really depressing.

It's interesting, walking 15 minutes to the next bus stop sounds like a nightmare in a city but pretty good in the country ...

jlow ,
@jlow@beehaw.org avatar

Yeah, the icons are really cool, I like the chunky, 3d-look.

jlow ,
@jlow@beehaw.org avatar

Waffles with (vegan) bacon and a syrup of your choice?

jlow ,
@jlow@beehaw.org avatar

Yeah, this is sad, just read a post that Desgner News shut down, it also was mostly spam jn the end, no one cared anymore. But maybe that's ok? Things change.

jlow ,
@jlow@beehaw.org avatar

Noyb doing the good work again, unstoppable!

jlow ,

Is this true, though? I heard an interview on the radio today woth a guy complaining that there were no exceptions for electric cars.

jlow ,

For those who wanna I hear

https://www.freshrss.org/

is pretty good. I kinda gave up on RSS when all artists moved from Tumblr and websites with RSS to the disgusting social networks ...

jlow ,
@jlow@beehaw.org avatar

Depends on your use-case obviously, for me it's very nice to have all feeds and read status on all devices (laptop, phone, tablet) and don't need to add a new feed to all devices or set it up again when I change phone, reinstall Linux etc. It also has user-management, so you could have accounts for friends and family and even expose it to the internet (which I wouldn't at this point) or but it on a private mesh / vpn like Tail-/Headscale.

Edit: Whoops, I was talking about self-hosting. Having it as a web service has the same benefits if you don't wanna tinker with tech, obviously, (with the caveat that people from that service know what you read ...)

jlow ,
@jlow@beehaw.org avatar

Oh, very cool list (though Nitter - and probably another Twitter clients?(1) - are probably dead?

(1) Maybe not:

Yeah +1 for Bazarr, has been working flawlessly for me for movies and series together with the other -arrs for Jellyfin for years.

Ok, premium features, In think that's a good business model for FOSS and closed source companies.
