Anyone using Mac windows and Linux over the years would see that most Linux DEs copy a lot from either MS or Apple, most outside of gnome primary mimicking windows.

So you literally just know gnome and kde plasma. That's cute.

jnk ,

Woah there! That wasn't a flex, I just said you don't seem so familiar with current computer interfaces. But hey, if you wanna be offended you do you

jnk , (edited )

When did I state any opinion on UI in this conversation? I just said not everything is apple and MS, and no shit most stuff has similarities people get used to features and there's stuff that just can't be done in more ways. Also I actually find KDE like a sweet spot between windows and android, with a few original and apple features. Just keep whining about how superior you think you are like an average apple fanboy

jnk ,

Google is an advertising company first, everything else second. Of course they shouldn't be trusted, it's safe to assume they'll log and analyze the smallest piece of data

jnk ,

This announcement would be a week after CryptOS imploded beautifully

jnk ,

are you that dense with jokes?

jnk ,

Problem is the training data might include "Do you know what google is, noob?"

jnk , (edited )

I haven't tried it myself (tho I'm planning to do so soon), but check Onju voice, it tries to do something kinda similar.

I hope someone tries do pull that on an echo dot. Good hardware, shit software.

Edit: Update with related links.

The Onju Github i forgot before, tho it's linked in pcbway. It has instructions to set it up along with home assistant and even a matrix bridge.

Onju voice satellite is a different project using the same custom pcb. This one looks better integrated with home assistant and has an actual wakeword system (unlike og onju, which doesn't have one by design). This one feels more like "better private alexa for home assistant".

Toggling on data collection without informing the user would mean billions of dollars worth of fines in Europe, so I doubt that happens regularly.

More like a few thousand euros symbolic fine and an angry letter saying "don't be an ass again pls our infrastructure depends on you" after years of blatant abuses and anti-consumer practices, followed by an ambiguous law (with positive effects affecting only european users) they will definitely not manage to circumvent withing the next week and a half. Not this time 🤡.

The problem here is the fact that most people just do not give a fuck about this; that's why there's no coverage in the (mainstream) media, why the only people who cares end up just leaving windows and why this kind of options are usually opt-out and they can actually afford to silently re-enable them cuz who's gonna check anyways? Random people ranting on meme communities about my fancy malware?

jnk ,

A version with different distros would be nice. I want to see blood here.

jnk ,

Tried a few of those once, only one worked and mfker installed itself in the next update. Uninstalling Windows was easy af tho.

jnk ,

That's the thing, most desktop distros come with a web browser preinstalled, but:

  • It's usually firefox or librewolf, which are objectively superior to edge in any scenario.
  • You can uninstall it right away with either a three word command or open a program with a big red "uninstall" button, no console needed.
  • Nothing breaks, the system literally doesn't give a fuck if you even have a web browser at all.
  • If you want another browser then go for it! You can even use edge if you're a psychopath. Your system wont judge you, but i might sorry-
  • It will never reinstall crap you uninstalled and set it the default on a random mandatory system update.
jnk ,

Agreed on that last part, making that the default would be a great solution. I could also use a signature in comments, like that guy who always puts the "Commercial AI thingy" but automatically.

jnk ,

Have you tried to read the fucking manual you filthy lazy fuck? Marked as solved. Is there anything else i can do to help you? 😊

jnk ,

The price difference is that google steals your data. That's it. OpenAI steals data, ask for money to use most of their models, and buy even more data from other companies stealing user data (like google and SO). Also indexing web pages is not even the "stealing" part of google, it's just not comparable.

Yes, training AI on user data for free then selling the end product is a reasonable thing to be concerned about. It'd be different if the product was free or the data was sold to them with user consent.

SO has announced a subscription-based service trained on user data for free, and not only there's not even opt-out, they're mass-banning users for trying to "opt-out" manually. Tell me one thing here that's not completely fucked up.

Does Matrix have anything akin to 'posts' as in Lemmy and Reddit?

I haven't really used any kind of messenger service since probably MSN Messenger and IRC back in the day so I'm a bit behind on a lot of the basics. Part of what's quite different now than the experience then is what modern messenger protocols seem to be used for, as in they have public channels dedicated to topics that function...

jnk ,

For me the ideal replacement would be to have a client supporting both lemmy and matrix. The UI would likely be an abomination tho.

I prefer Matrix communities over Discord servers, but both are mediocre forum replacements. I wish forums would return, but the heydays of PHPBB seem long gone.

Also prefer forums for most stuff, in group chats the relevant info gets lost easily, it's harder to moderate, and impossible to continue a topic in medium-big communities. I think most people like discord over post because they don't like the "create topic each time you wanna talk" dynamic, but then everyone started using thread channels the moment discord added them. It could be more reasonable to have one "general" chat then the rest be posts (kinda like amino i guess?), rather that implementing a whole forum inside an instant messaging app.

jnk ,

...Did you just speculated a terrifyingly credible AI-generated Microsoft ad disguised as genuine tech support?

Confusing realization here

Isn't that like an AI ad about AI and ads?

jnk ,

Upvoted & i want to end my life now

jnk ,

Either that or stop babysitting canonical and use debian instead

jnk ,

I truly wouldn't recommend Linux for a fairly tech illiterate person like him

I would actually argue the opposite, linux is way more intuitive for new people who hasn't used a pc before or hasn't used windows long enough to fill their brain with their unconsistent mess. I've seen 3 variants of this already with people close to me ( last one of them encouraged by me). Kinda mind boggling.

jnk ,

I thought it meant 90% of the ones switching to windows

jnk ,

Not very accessible, in the vast majority of (troubleshooting, nothing private) cases free gpt is the best option (fast, free, openAI training on that chat might even be beneficial to the community). Decent GPU's for LLM are stupid pricey.

jnk ,

Untrue statement plus in some distros you don't need the terminal at all. Fear to the terminal is included in windows' inconsistent mess, as i said, to real first time users it's not that horrible to "talk to the pc so it does what you told it to do".

Also you don't get to decide if an experience i had felt mind boggling or not (?

jnk ,

The worst web browser ever, period, is still embedded into the system to this day and the entire OS will collapse if you manage to delete. Just an example; without the bloat you literally wouldn't have any OS left (except, ironically, some unix components).

That said, I agree with you, no OS is great compared with windows lol

jnk ,

Tbh I'm pretty new to nixos, but I'm starting to believe if we had that the exact same config (at least without flakes, I'm still having trouble undertanding them) but with a slightly abstracted UI, it would be one of the most user-friendly distros out there.

Like just imagine being able to click "Add program", write the name of a program, having all the options appear below as dropdown menus or on/off switches, then click big blue button "Apply" to rebuild.

jnk ,

Check on EducaandOS. It's my region's school distro. It was absolute crap around 15 years ago, when they launched (names Guadalinex Edu), but it was preinstalled in school laptops so we learned to use it.

Right now it's pretty decent and simple enough to just throw it into a kid's computer, but sadly nobody gives a fuck about it. It would be so cool if more institutions tried to pull projects like this

jnk ,

So that begs the question: whY THE FUCK haven't i search for that before?

Thanks, I'll be looking into it

jnk ,

I will die of laughter if someone manages to trick copilot to get data stolen from the USA (or another countrie's) government by M$. Not saying it will happen, but knowing GPT... Just imagine the memes

jnk ,

Perfection. I'll add one more:

MacOS: "We had the original mouse and everyone else copied us so, in order to make you feel special and quirky, here have an exclusive inverted wheel mouse. Only 199'99. Your welcome."

jnk ,

Hey, thanks for coming back with the response! I wish there was more conversations in the "public" space.

As for the original post, if I've understood correctly, this is more a client problem than a matrix protocol one, right? The next important step would be to have an android client feature the jitsi VOIP calls.

jnk ,

Blame apple for that. IPhone has this proprietary messaging app pre-installed which is probably super convinient for the ecosystem but uses some obsolete SMS protocol to communicate with android phones.
I think recently this has gotten better, but only because beeper and the EU pressing on them
