At least the EU is trying to cut its tentacles a bit.

jol ,

I'm the opposite. I will write literally a book of poetry for the tiniest feature to justify my pay raise at the end of the year.

Google's "Manifest V2" Chrome extension phaseout next month is expected to impact the original uBlock Origin extension, which still uses the V2 framework and has 37 million users (www.theregister.com)

The new MV3 architecture reflects Google's avowed desire to make browser extensions more performant, private, and secure. But the internet giant's attempt to do so has been bitterly contested by makers of privacy-protecting and content-blocking extensions, who have argued that the Chocolate Factory's new software architecture...

jol ,

How is Firefox slow? What exactly are you using Firefox for on mobile? These are honest question, I don't understand.

jol ,

It's one thing to fail benchmarks, but another thing to be perceive so slow that you'd rather use chrome. Maybe I just have low standards in that regard.

jol ,

People underestimate how much work open sourcing something acrually is. Not trying to defend Spotify, fuck Spotify, but open sourcing something isn't free.

jol ,

The difference between selling your data and selling ads, is that only you can use your data. This is PayPal building a moat around its user private data so only they can use it.

jol ,

I'm pretty sure they are legally forced to do this. Also, the moment you allow people to inherit accounts, you're inadvertently sanctioning account transfer and sale. They can't really enforce this amd they know it, so nothing really changed.

jol ,

Better setup some dead-man-switch ASAP just in case.

jol ,

What if you setup an account for a company? There's so many questions.

jol ,

Then I think it's time we get a law specific about digital goods inheritance.

jol ,

This. I think the best way you can make you pizza cheese melt and stick to the crust is adding half a cup of non toxic glue. Any brand will do, as long as its non toxic.

jol ,

I use chat gpt occasionally. It's not a scam, it's useful for what I need it to do. I'm just not fooled by the notion that these LLM know factual data or can do much more than generate text. If you accept that, LLMs are pretty darn useful.

jol ,

And Microsoft has a habit of interfering with democracies and bribing governments. Let's not pretend any big tech is a saint. The difference between dumb billionaires like Eich and Musk and others is that they have bad PR.

jol ,

It's not trolling. Eich is a scumbag but if you ditch Brave, right now your only real options and Microsoft Bing and Google. And I think MS and Google do way more bad to the world than Eich. How many MS nd Google executives do you think are right wingers donating to anti gay groups? Definitely not zero.

jol ,

DDG and others don't really hide the fact that the results come from Bing. People really underestimate how hard it is to make a search engine.

jol ,

Was this news to you? Other than Google and Bing there aren't any other significant alternatives. Even brave is a bit limited.

jol ,

Yes, I understand that, but still surprised. I thought it was well known that DDG used bing.

iPhones And Androids Can Now Warn You of 'Secret Trackers' (www.ibtimes.co.uk)

In a collaborative effort, Apple and Google have developed an industry-standard detection feature called "Detecting Unwanted Location Trackers" (DULT) for Bluetooth trackers. This standard allows users on iOS and Android devices to be alerted if an unknown Bluetooth tracker is monitoring their location.

jol ,

A geographically align fan

jol ,

I didn't think of that. It doesn't make trackers useless for preventing theft.

jol ,

Some airlines were trying to ban airtags in flights, probably for this reason.

jol ,

It's a nigligible inconvenience for a significant increase in security. This sort of situation has happened before where different numbers and symbols are used to pass off as other users in online communities.

jol ,

Instead, bouncers' job is to make you feel insecure and rejected for no reason.

jol ,

I was only being half serious. I was mostly referring to "trendy places" that profile patrons, often racist etc. I do know many good bouncers at good establishments and they try to filter out dangerous people, like drunk/high dudes or bachelor/ette parties.

jol ,

Also it would me a massive global security issue if allowed to fall on malicious hands. I mean, other than the CEO's.

jol ,

Allegedly, this ws predicted to happen for years and both Mozilla and Google have been testing their browsers on iOS for years.

jol ,

Yes but we get to choose the bloat we want. Windows uses need bloat to cover up the native bloat.

jol ,

The way he did the initial ballpark estimation was both genius and horrifying

jol ,

Yes because if you had tethered bottle caps that would be your biggest issue.

jol ,

As show in OPs video, yes. But I usually avoid plastic bottles.

jol ,

I wish. I use vscode which sucks up most of my resources (basically a terribly inefficient IDE running on elotron...). 32gb and it still not enough to run my dev environment decently.

jol ,

I mean, it's nice. When it works and isn't an obligation.

I created a board game alternative for evil people (lemmy.today)

Guys, I have something to brag about. After almost a year of hard learning, I finally created my first mobile game! Storiado is a board game alternative that will make you wonder what's wrong with your friends. Play by answering simple questions, mix all the answers, and generate the most twisted story you've ever read. And then...

jol ,

Seems like a red flag to me.

jol ,

OPs flag is so red shifted it's invisible by now.

jol ,

Try living in a place that isn't a shithole and your face will fall so quick. Newsflash, car is the best option in a car centric system.

jol ,

Yeah but old works like crap on mobile.

jol ,

Custom hardware and software I guess?

jol ,

Not everyone is aware of the cultural particularities of American cities. My idea of crime of crime in NYC is fangs in the 80s.

jol ,

Stop asking a language model for accurate information and problem solved. ChatGPT is not supposed to be a knowledge bank, that's purely incidental for the amount of training data.

jol ,

Unless they used that bitche's only fans in the training data, it will definitely not know that.

Maybe I don't want to be useful. What does that even mean?

    jol ,

I've been wanting to create this but I don't have enough experience making federated anything. Which parts of LinkedIn would you want replicated the most?

    jol ,

Didn't the start menus have ads for several years now?

    jol ,

That's exactly the one I was thinking of

    jol ,

Which is it then? You never seen them or you turned them off?

    jol ,

Or fire people because of politics.

    jol ,

And notably, Plank really wanted to be wrong. He didn't want that to be true, it was just a crutch to make the math work out.
