Super-short version:

The system that Linux uses to draw anything on the screen (showing the desktop, your windows, their contents, etc) is called a display server.

Linux has been using a display server called the X Window System (or x11) since its inception, but it's ancient and has limitations that can't be fixed without breaking everything that depends on it.

The Wayland compositor is the new display server that will be replacing x11, improving security and adding support for newer features like HDR. It's nearly ready for a full release now, and is already the default for some Linux distributions.

Hence my reference to the Wayland compositor rather than just Wayland.

I work in this industry and I can confirm that there's fucking nothing ensuring the privacy of these transactions. Tens of thousands of people have full access to everyone's credit card history, and that's not counting unauthorized access and card skimmers.

Crypto is just as insecure as credit cards. The whole point of the blockchain is that everyone can see all transactions.

Basically, yeah.

Eventually the distant galaxies will fade into memory as their light is lost to the expansion of the universe, then the stars will all burn out, the radioactive materials will all decay, and black holes evaporate in the final flashes of light to illuminate the universe.

With no sources of heat left, what remains gets down near absolute zero as residual energy is lost as infrared radiation. The heat death of the universe is the long, cold dark at the end of everything.

Thus, any "true" sort of immortality must necessarily violate the conservation of energy.

Therefore, we should investigate immortal entities as potential post-stellar-phase power sources.

The strat on 100 LANs was to gang up on the one person who smoked everyone in the game and start grabbing stuff off their fileshare at the same time.

I self-describe as an anarcho-communist, but library socialism (or anarcho-librarianism) is an acceptable step in the right direction.

Library Socialism is wholly compatible with most forms of Anarchism.

The issue with Nvidia cards is that some Linux distros don't install their proprietary drivers by default and the open-source version is only just starting to catch up.

Most will ask if you want to install the OS with Nvidia's drivers, or they'll have an option somewhere in the settings for a one-click install.

A vote for a third party candidate is a -1 to Biden's absolute vote count

That's only true if one assumes the vote would have gone to Biden in the absense of third parties.

It's just as likely that the voter would have voted for nobody or Trump, so at best you are only 1/3rd correct.

I'm procrastinating while stuck at work, what's your excuse?

I love happy roadkill

I was looking for a more apropos non-HappyRoadkill one, "They say the next one will be sent by a woman." "Really makes you feel like a part of history" as the drone drops bombs over them. But it must be buried deep in my image collection.

Once the GOP is made irrelevant, a left-wing electoral movement may be able (with the help of non-electoral leftist activitists) to form a genuine left-wing party, which will make direct action easier and our ultimate victory just that much closer and more likely.

I'd certainly hope so, but the more realistic assessment is a split among the Democrats. Half of them will want to keep their current rightward drift in hopes of attracting ex-Republican voters, the other half will break off towards centrism, maybe social democracy if we're really lucky.

It seems more likely to me because our first-past-the-post elections make a two-party system a mathematical certainty. If one of the major parties implodes, something else must take its place, and a faction among the other major party is much better equipped to attract the newly unaligned voters than third-party also-rans.

Manchin and the DINOs will go one way, AOC and The Squad go another. Party leadership will align with the former over the latter, so the Democrats become the new right-wing party. Whether the left-wing faction joins with the Green Party or the Greens become a faction of the new left party is a distinction without much difference.
