I think you're right - women are also socialized to seek out social/interpersonal connections more than men; this is a big factor in why the suicide rate for elderly men tends to be significantly higher than for elderly women.

This doesn't explain the 60 year olds but with the elderly (70+) women in my life, the vulnerability to misinformation is also an artifact of their comparatively poor levels of education. They were schooled with the expectation that they would be SAHMs.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

This is like cartoon villain level evil at this point.

“That is something that everybody can see with their own eyes. The killing of aid workers, the targeting of hospitals, the total destruction of the healthcare system, the massive number of civilian casualties, many of whom are women and children,” McManus said. “That does not happen in a context in which the prosecuting army is adhering to international law.”

This is key.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Yikes.

I had a conversation with Pi which tries for empathy. It was really weird because every now and again it did sound like it was interested in me or cared about me. Reminds me of that Philip K Dick story about the murder bots that look like wounded soldiers or lost children.

Do you leave a tip for housekeeping if you're only staying one night in a hotel?

Is it a 'thank you for prepping my room' or 'please clean my room today'? If you tip post cleaning, it's likely going to someone else the next day. Many hotels now only do housekeeping on demand. How do employees feel about this - do they miss the tips or are they happy for a less stressful workday?...

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Tipping isn't a thing in my country, to the extent that if you left money lying around your room it would most probably still be there when you got back.

Unless maybe you were staying somewhere that gets a lot of tipping tourists.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Friendly reminder to everyone irritated by the above rhetoric:

If you are in a country that suspended its support of the UN organization UNRWA, you can still donate to them directly at https://donate.unrwa.org/

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

That's a pretty bizare straw man; I'm picturing it looks like this.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Good name for it. I've been weirdly haunted by it.

Google fires 28 workers for protesting $1.2 billion Israel contract (www.nbcnews.com)

"Google issued a stern warning to its employees, with the company’s vice president of global security, Chris Rackow, saying, “If you’re one of the few who are tempted to think we’re going to overlook conduct that violates our policies, think again,” according to an internal memo obtained by CNBC."

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

I never really forgave them for the original ManBearPig climat change denialism.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

If it had happened like in the 1980s or something it would have been forgiveable but it was like 2006, at that point we all already knew climate change was real.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

I remember being young and thinking middle-aged people are staring at me because they want me /they disapprove/whatever.

Now I'm middle aged myself, I know the staring is way more likely to either be something along the lines of "ah that kid is so 90s, I never had that green colour but blue Fudge used to wash out to green like that..."

Or "have we run out of natural yoghurt, we bought that 500ml pottle last week but we had curry twice, maybe I should get some more..."

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Me too, it's like the boring version of those "reveries" in Westworld.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Morpheus: ".... and find out just how deep the rabbit hole goes." Only it's more like an interconnected maze of rabbit holes leading everywhere. I wonder if you can still get "pina colada" Malibu?

Theoretically she could part her hair with a knife and bleach the green side, wait 20 min and put the black side on with a toothbrush, then wash it and add the green as required?

I love how Gen Z has gone back to all that stuff.

@livus@kbin.social avatar

Fashion goes in cycles. Personally I'm just waiting for the nice wide jeans to filter down to an affordable price point and then I'm going to get some for myself.

I hate skinny jeans. They feel cloying and I'm pretty sure they promote swamp crotch.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

It sort of felt like capitalism was embracing the skinny leg trend and that's how it became so ubiquitous even outside of fashion. Same price, less fabric.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

There's probably fancy metal hairdressing combs that would do it, but the "prow" of a normal comb is too blunt to separate the hair perfectly. You end up with strands from the left on the right etc.

The old DIY trick is to turn a sharp-pointed knife upside down so that the blade doesn't face the scalp, and then use the point to gently part the hair. That's how you get a perfect straight parting.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

It could get bad if you sliced your scalp!

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

And fuck off whoever that tells me again to set up my own instance. What I want is popular instance admins and mods to

Seriously though you're making demands that other people work for free in a manner that will benefit you.

Way I see it, either take some of the free lunch that's on offer or make your own.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Orientalism is this stuff.

Idk I personally enjoy seeing terms I learned in grad school being thrown around in a mod log.

Paradigm shifts keep the brain nimble.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

I can't see the whole comment.

Besides which it's a qualitative judgment so unless they did a full on Content Analysis grid on your ass, I'd probably not know what they meant, unless you were doing something really obvious like calling the Chinese "inscrutible".

I still kind of enjoy the novelty of seeing mods censor people for this arcane stuff. I wouldn't want to be on that instance but I quite like visiting it.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Nice to know it's not just me. Feel like a weirdo doing it.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

His "outrage" is meaningless. He's actively aiding and abetting.

US credibility is taking a hit on the global stage.

As for Biden, I can really see why this issue is hurting his campaign in the US. As well as supporting genocide it just makes him sound super insincere and duplicitous.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

I too am outraged by the outrage.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

This article's compatible with that. The tldr is as usual brother laser, any model.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

This is my favourite meme of the week.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

For now. The US is a victim of legislative capture by corporations and it's possible that in the future lobbying by insurance companies will open the door to them using some of that data.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

If someone launched galactic war using clones of me, I'd be laughed at all over the galaxy.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

At first I thought the notorious kbin thumbnail mismatch bug struck again but no.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Smartest animal I ever met was my indoor/outdoor cat.

Then again she was brindle and looked like a wild cat.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Do you mean so I could meet primates? Our zoos don't let you do that.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Thanks for the suggestion.

@livus@kbin.social avatar

Cute!

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

@qjkxbmwvz I think the main fear is Embrace Extend Extinguish.

It's not about interacting with Threadworms, it's about sleepwalking into a situation where Meta is changing the very nature of ActivityPub itself.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

@Ghostalmedia

we’re not going to see them here. We can’t. That hasn’t been built.

It has been partially built insofar as Kbin and Mbin can see Mastodon posts here and Mastodon interacts with us. Wouldn't surprise me if Lemmy eventually gets some of that functionality too.

If Meta starts to EEE ActivityPub that will affect all of us.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

I think this article, How to kill a decentralized network, gives one of the best explanations, because it uses a real world example of how it has happened in the past.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

TIL Lemmy doesn't allow you to follow people. Wtf.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

There’s also some great irony in the fact that they’re talking about genocide while advocating for using the nuclear option to block Facebook despite the massive number of innocent casualties it’ll cause.

Sir/Madame, not being able to see some online content is nothing at all like having your family members murdered in real life.

Read A Death Sentence For My Father sometime and you will see.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

It's a really inappropriate comparison tho.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

@VirtualOdour the point of me sharing that article was just to try to put a human dimension on genocide for that callous person above.

Meta have been implicated in at least two genocides now and openly obstructed the International Criminal Court in their investigation of one of them. I think people are only pointing that out to show how evil Meta are.

But if you want to know what specifically they will do to ActivityPub, the other article I shared has more direct relevance: How to kill a decentralized network.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Your topic's a false premise. First of all it's totally valid to criticize someone for something that couldn't apply in the current situation, because what's being criticized is the decisions and attitudes that their actions reveal.

Meta's refusal to moderate a website they control after multiple warnings that it was being used to incite genocide speaks to their institutional values, accountability, and culture.

By contrast, plenty of instance owners have shown responsibility, accountability, and good faith about admins moderating the instances they control.

try to be accurate and concise.

Lol that's condescending, and it's also a bit offputting. I come here to bloviate thank you very much. :)

The thing is though, I'm not part of the wider conversation about facebook above. You glommed onto a very simple, very specific point I made to someone else about the human impact of social media incitements to genocide.

What Meta did to the ICC isn't even related to my above link (which is about the Tigray genocide, not the Myanmar genocide). But it's well-documented, and I'm not interested in rehashing it here.

The meaning of life is to create surplus value to bestow on cats.

Capitalists getting it too is just a side effect.

Think about it, historically speaking, capitalism basically rose alongside granaries and the ability to store grain. This is also when cats domesticated us.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Yeah I was being a bit of an oblivious dick in my comment.

I still disagree with him though.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

@Spotlight7573 thanks for the heads up. I'm an idiot.

livus ,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

You're right and I have since read the article properly.

I'm not a coder, just a casual, but it's interesting, though I still disagree that it's a good way to go.
