'Vortex Cannon vs Drone' - Mark Rober shows off tech from a "defense technology company that specializes in advanced autonomous systems". That seems bad

I've enjoyed Mark Rober's videos for a while now. They are fun, touch on accessible topics, and have decent production value. But this recent video isn't sitting right with me...

lledrtx ,

Mark has always been icky for me. I watch these kinds of videos almost excellently - the science-tech ones; yet I avoid him like the plague.

How do you propose YouTube should pay for infrastructure costs (servers, Internet etc), staff costs (engineers, designers, moderators) and the content creators?

lledrtx ,

Are you saying that the ads shouldn't be video ads but webpage ads, instead?

It's their job.

Yeah, exactly why they are enforcing anti-adblock rules...

lledrtx ,

That price wouldn't even begin to cover it. Infrastructure is expensive at that quality. Engineers to maintain such infrastructure are also expensive. Content creators make a ton of money too. Their profits are much lower compared to peers - https://mannhowie.com/youtube-valuation

Also, 22$/month gets you a family plan for 5 people so wtf are you talking about?

I don't give 2 shits about YouTube, I use ad block where I can too. I'm just saying that people who complain about YouTube's anti-adblock stuff are being unrealistic, you can't fault them for trying to block people from stealing from them.

lledrtx ,

Coincidentally I'm on a train too and the whole train car is complaining about me furiously masturbating at the picture.

lledrtx ,

This is incredibly racist. So I really hope this is a troll post.

lledrtx ,

You taking your experience with a few AliExpress sellers & Tiktok owners and generalizing it to Chinese culture is the definition of racism.

Ex-Activision CEO Bobby Kotick looks to buy TikTok amid shutdown fears - Dexerto (www.dexerto.com)

TikTok has been at the center of controversy for the United States government in the last few years. Particularly, members of the Senate believe China-based parent company ByteDance could spy on its users and share information with the Chinese Government....

lledrtx ,

I don't understand why this comment is inevitably under every Tiktok thread. Everyone knows Big Tech spies for the govt especially the lawmakers, precisely why they don't want a hostile foreign govt doing it.

China knows this too - that's why FB, Google etc are banned there. So what's your point?

lledrtx ,

Nice post history, OP. Not unhinged at all.

lledrtx ,

This comic sucks and openly defends racist rhetoric. Why is it so highly upvoted on Lemmy?

lledrtx ,

Thank you for that!

The problem is the first frame. The woman says she doesn't think a whole group shouldn't exist. You can't say that and expect a person from that group to ask why she thinks he should be dead... Replace the sealion with any minority group and you'll see what I'm talking about.

Replace what she said with "trans women are women" or something progressive and I would be 100% on board with the comic. At best the comic is executed badly, at worst it's an exercise in making anti-racists look bad.

2G, 3G, 4G, 5G mobile data made some sense as it represents generational leaps in the technology itself but then Xfinity wants to advertise "10g" internet...

Comcast says it represents a 10 Gigabit cable internet network they are building (it doesn’t exist) so they are basically changing the meaning of the g from generation to gig to act like 10g is 5 generations better (or twice as fast)…or that they have a 10 gigabit network. Neither is accurate. It’s still just cable...

lledrtx ,

I would be surprised if ITU lets them get away with that. 🤔

lledrtx ,

I mean he has a history of doing this... Also, it's not an audio recording. He joined a live audio chat and everyone on the chat (Alex Jones and some other weirdo) thought it was Elon.

lledrtx ,

How do you explain the concentration of wealth in the owner class, then? There are plenty of plots showing that in that website.

Gen Z falls for online scams more than their boomer grandparents do. The generation that grew up with the internet isn’t invulnerable to becoming the victim of online hackers and scammers. (www.vox.com)

No way it went up 20x in 5yrs? There must be something weird with the data

lledrtx ,

Watch 4? I got the non-classic and my battery sucks ass now.
I'm looking at replacing the battery now

lledrtx ,

OMG, thank you! I've been saying for years that something is not right about him but I can't pinpoint why. We will see with time, I guess!

lledrtx ,

I'm so confused by why people have trouble with Nvidia on Linux. I have been using Debian and Ubuntu for as long as I can remember with Nvidia and it's never been a problem. Now I use Pop and it's perfectly fine too. No problem running dual 4K 60Hz monitors... Is the support bad on non-Debian distros?

lledrtx ,

Imagine how many people you can pack in a small space. You only would need 2ft x 2ft space per person and you can put the entire company on a single floor!

I think the ruling class "controls/exploits some things" and they are "in control" is the difference? Like yes they have bled us dry with their grip but as WikiLeaks, Epstein, Panama papers etc suggests, they weren't really "in control". Right now, there's a decent chance that Pakistan falls to the Taliban and their nukes will be in their hands - is actually anyone "in control" of this situation?
