Yeah, I'd agree. Donald Trump is the perfect example, at least until recently.

machinin ,

Why the actual fuck is anyone throwing such a fit about the military researching the impact of one of the most important current technologies on military strategy and planning?

I do miss the depth and experience of Reddit users on articles like this.

Edit - glad to see some good responses in this thread.

machinin ,

Yes, I understand their criticism. But you would never prove the consequences of using LLMs in a military strategic situation without doing the research. It is some some edgy user coming in after the fact to say they knew it would happen anyway

Good engineers, scientists, and strategists don't think "Why would someone do something so idiotic?" They ask "What happens when someone does this idiotic thing?"

Apparently, for OP, it seems absurd for anyone to research the question of what kind of military strategies current LLMs would create. I guarantee you that students from military academies and leaders from militaries across the globe have already been using these tools in their work. It would be stupid as fuck not to research the impact.

I just hate that people like the OP sit in their armchair without doing the research and say "obviously you're going to get those results!" Science and engineering don't work that way. It was frustrating seeing such vacuous comments upvoted so highly.

I think you want to use hourly cost, or maybe some other measure of the utility of something. I can own a rock, and it may be a magnificent rock that will last centuries, but it isn't going to give me much benefit.

Same with an old cell phone. I may be able to use it for 8 years, but I'm not going to use it for navigation, taking pictures, video chatting with family/friends, replacing my laptop when I'm out, etc.

Your table is a good start, but it's missing some really important information

machinin ,

Basically, I don't think think monthly cost of ownership is a good metric for value.

I probably used an old cell phone maybe 3 hours a week. I use my smartphone at least 3 hours a day communicating with people, reading news, studying, games for kids, work, etc. I don't think monthly cost of ownership reflects the value that those devices bring me. Your table needs a different column that measures the value more appropriately. Perhaps ownership cost per hour of usage?

You have another issue in that smartphones replace cameras, radios/Walkmen, maps, and even laptops In many cases. An iphone doesn't just replace an old Nokia, it replaces all those other items as well.

I don't think you need more rows, you need different columns.

machinin OP ,

How many queries a month do you have? I'm at 15 days and I'm already at 750K. Do you pay for your service? I can do that, just curious what is common.

machinin OP ,

Unfortunately, I don't think my router is compatible with Merlin.

Thank you, though, I appreciate the feedback.

machinin OP ,

Sorry for the confusion, but everything was working fine, I just had to update the server my pi-hole docker container was hosted on and noticed that I lost access to the internet. It works beautifully when the container is up and running.

machinin OP ,

Thanks, this looks good, but I'm not sure I can do it on Asus. I'll look into it.

machinin OP ,

Thanks, I see that is the common recommendation. I also have to think what to do if I'm away and the family has issues.

I appreciate the response.

machinin OP ,

Sorry for the confusion, I was just doing maintenance on my home server and so the docker container hosting pi-hole was down. Usually it works beautifully.

machinin OP ,

Thanks. Yeah, that is what I did during maintenance, but I'm trying to think what happens if I'm gone and my family has issues.

machinin OP ,

Thanks, that might work. I'll check into it.

If you have a pi-hole or other way to block access to your network, I've found these useful to block:

androidtvwatsonfe-pa.googleapis.com

androidtvchannels-pa.googleapis.com

androidtvlauncherxfe-pa.googleapis.com

machinin ,

Fuck, I regret buying my Chromebook so much.

machinin ,

This posted prompted my to set up pihole. My blank space has a big "not connected to the internet," although all the services work.

Unfortunately, they also disabled accessibility settings, so I can't remap buttons or add another launcher.

This is my last Google TV. Are there any other options?

machinin ,

The software is free, and you would never need to pay anything to get set up great system for yourself. In addition to that, they also offer a service that you can subscribe to that gives you some benefits. You can replicate all the functions on your own, I believe, but the service makes it extremely simple.

machinin ,

I'm not sure if I'm the typical user looking at these reviews, but I want to know about installing other firmware. For example, on Asus, can I install the Merlin firmware. On others, is ddwrt or openwrt available?
