Are we in a "free market" or we not? The answer is "depends on what lobbyists want."

mightyfoolish ,

They provide a shop front interface called TikTok Shop. It's something Meta has been wanting to do for awhile in WhatsApp.

mightyfoolish ,

Government did not care what happened on Tiktok during the KIA nonsense. Tiktok is now more controlled and cleaned up and became a new source for young people. Now the government wants to ban it. It is much better than before and the whole time it was Chines owned. So now, you have to argue against two points.

  1. It was OK Asian people owned it before. Why not now?
  2. The content is moderated now and adults no longer complain it's worse than Instagram, Twitter, or the racist cesspool of a comment section that is Youtube.
mightyfoolish ,

@Zorque They have a phone in every price range starting from free with activation to $2000. Sometimes they use old hardware and software, sometimes they need niche software drivers like the Flip and Fold.

mightyfoolish ,

I get upgrades help the bottom line but considering that 8GB of RAM chokes the silicon they are allegedly so proud of... seems like a slap in the face to their own engineers (and the customer as well but that is not my point).

mightyfoolish ,

There's probably a very good reason most Lemmy instances do not bother with NFSW content.

A German state is ditching Windows and Microsoft Office for Linux and LibreOffice on the 30,000 PCs it uses for local government functions (www.theregister.com)

Schleswig-Holstein, Germany's most northern state, is starting its switch from Microsoft Office to LibreOffice, and is planning to move from Windows to Linux on the 30,000 PCs it uses for local government functions....

mightyfoolish ,

I wonder what they will choose for their base. I was surprised LiMux was based off Debian since Suse is headquartered in Luxembourg City. I personally would welcome a large organization choosing Suse products as we need more competition for RHEL (which would be a huge boon in productivity since we won't need like 3 projects to spend a decent amount of time repackaging RHEL).

mightyfoolish ,

SCSV (semicolon separated values) at least sounds like an upgrade to CSV. Or maybe just use something that is flexible but is standard like JSON?

mightyfoolish ,

Nix does have an interesting package manager.

The states are paying them to support a desktop, not an OS to run whatever on.

Don't they need money to fund both aspects? Is there any support to lean on someone goes with Nix?

A lot of governments in the US pretty much go through Microsoft for simplicity. There's a lot of software obtained from a single vendor. I suppose that's why rhel is so popular.

mightyfoolish ,

Yeah, I get what you mean. I'm so overprotective of my dishwasher I actually pre-scrub plates very quickly so not to clog the dishwasher (which is pretty similar to sanitizing inputs for putting them in a database I guess). 😊 It's still much faster than doing the dishes by hands.

But the point is something simple can run on a simple device with minimal supervision.

mightyfoolish ,

Good to know. I did not realize that this team was this large. I hope it works out.

mightyfoolish ,

I don't know if you understood my original post, it was too get an alternative to an enterprise distro with vendor paid support. In this regard the alternatives to Debian are more OpenSuse and Rocky, not RHEL (this is not a comparison of quality).

Yeah, the other alternative would be to set up a consultation company that is based around Debian. I guess that is what Dataport is supposed to be then, the support. It's s different route but still works.

mightyfoolish ,

BTW, TIL learned more pronouns.

Some people give options when sharing their pronouns. For example a non-binary person could use both “he/him/his” and “they/them/theirs” pronouns. - https://www.diversitycenterneo.org/about-us/pronouns/

Linux is

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux!

[I'm sorry, could not resist.]

mightyfoolish ,

What's the difference?

mightyfoolish ,

We are talking about management going from a Chinese company to a US company. They're will be no guarantees we will end up with the same service.

mightyfoolish ,

Every internet service got worse... with the same owners.

mightyfoolish ,

None of the CPUs on that list contain Intel Management Engine. What gives China, you don't want a CPU in your CPU?

mightyfoolish ,

At this point the EU should just set a timer for complaining that Microsoft uses Windows' large market share to force services on their users. I do like efficient governments.

mightyfoolish ,

Richard Stallman is the textbook definition of "domain matter expert." When it comes to software and his philosophy of the four freedoms of software; everyone should heed his warnings.

When it comes to everything else, take what this man says with a grain bottle of salt.

Now if you identify as a Stallman-sexual because you have a toe jam fetish; I'm not going to kink shame you for it.

mightyfoolish ,

For example, I agree that we should reject the term “sexual assault”

While RMS is a person who loves to argue on semantics; this argument comes from his friend being accused of sexual assault. "Oh my friend was accused of sexual assault... when you think about it what really is sexual assault?" (This is not a direct quote, I'm just making a point.)

I think it’s sad that someone uploaded a video of him doing something embarrassing just to make fun of him

This was during a conference and he was being asked a question. The most you can complain about is it went viral (or that he did this in public).

Nintendo is suing the makers of the Switch emulator Yuzu, claims 'There is no lawful way to use Yuzu' (www.pcgamer.com)

Nintendo is suing the makers of the Switch emulator Yuzu, claims 'There is no lawful way to use Yuzu'::Nintendo of America is suing the maker of the Nintendo Switch emulator Yuzu, saying it "unlawfully circumvents the technological measures" that prevent Switch games from being played on othe

mightyfoolish ,

Even better, there's two!

Ryujinx and Yuzu are both competent emulators even though the Switch is Nintendo's current console

mightyfoolish ,

Microsoft would make more from continued Windows usage (between selling data and products like Office) then that license key sold in volume to the OEM.

mightyfoolish ,

While I do think you are correct, you have to remember a few things:

  1. SMS really isn't used outside the US (and iMessage pretty much was the death of text messages and now iMessage also supports RCS)
  2. Open source projects can be strict about following a moral code
  3. Anything more than just sending secure messages is just an attack vector and more layers of code to maintain
mightyfoolish ,

Most plans include unlimited text messaging.

mightyfoolish ,

Very good point. I did forget about that. That's pretty much the only time most of my family will look at actual SMS messages.

Reddit has never turned a profit in nearly 20 years, but filed to go public anyway (www.cnn.com)

Reddit has never turned a profit in nearly 20 years, but filed to go public anyway::Reddit, the message board site known for its chronically online userbase and for originating much internet discourse, filed for its long-anticipated initial public offering on Thursday.

mightyfoolish ,

Why, Google just paid $60 million a year to scan reddit accounts and generate new dirty videos along with designing adult actors suited to user personal tastes. (What else can you do with reddit user data?)

mightyfoolish ,

Personally, I am okay with Valve not always being the company they are now. A government did its job and the company it affected became consumer friendly [and still dominated the market by believing in a market no other major publisher wanted to touch at the time]. This is what governments are created for: helping the citizens while letting these companies innovate.

mightyfoolish ,

They really need a way to gain money independently from Google. Reselling an interesting looking service is better than only Google.

mightyfoolish ,

I have an issue with calling Edge "a bloated privacy invading Chrome clone". It's a "a bloated privacy invading Chrome repackage", thank you.

mightyfoolish ,

2023 was the year of the Linux desktop.

  1. Got Discord and Zoom off the store
  2. Zoom screen and webcam sharing just worked
  3. Was able to even switch Bluetooth profile through GUI
  4. Essentially any game that didn't use a kernel level spyware works
  5. Chromebook hardware in the $500 range is pretty good
  6. Must software is web based.

I recommend OpenSuse Tumbleweed. Install once, update weekly or biweekly. (It's a rolling release, so it doesn't have major upgrades like Windows 10 to 11 does.) About a month ago I did an upgrade on my old laptop. Handled 2 years of updates flawlessly.

mightyfoolish ,

artix

Wow, are you able to use the new s6 supervisor or service manager yet, or is it too early yet? I saw an initial post once but didn't follow it's development.

Sorry you had problems with Tumbleweed. The forums and subreddit are very supportive, no matter how you installed the distro. It's actually why I moved to Tumbleweed from Arch.

mightyfoolish ,

That makes sense. I just assumed everyone used s6 on artix. Now I know better!

'Our long-term objective is to make printing a subscription' says HP CEO gunning for 2024's Worst Person of the Year award | Not satisfied with merely bricking printers, HP now wants to own them al...::It was only the other day we reported how HP has been slapped with a lawsuit in response to measures that disable its printers...

mightyfoolish ,

Their cheap. HP lowest end printers were always cheaper then the ink. Customers buy the wireless ink with a subscription and think it's a convenience. It's a scam but it's a scam that works.

Basically now that everyone is poor this is how tech companies will address customer needs: low barrier for every and a subscription.
