@Ilandar this is a good solution . Another would be to just not jump ship head first, but rather replace everything wth FOSS alternatives instead if they're not available on Linux (e.g.: replace MS Office with LibreOffice, Photoshop with GIMP or something else, etc.) and use them for a while. Most of the programs should also be available for Windows, and if not you could also use WSL to run them.

Once you get used to these programs, the actual Linux transition should be easier.

Just tried the mobile version of Winamp looking for a better Android music player. The interface looks great tbh, but man, they got no support for wma files and some of the tags are not read correctly (on the songs I own). I know this is not an issue for most of the people, but for me, it's really limiting on the music players I can use on my phone. Sadly, Winamp doesn't fit in this category either. Thank god there is Foobar that supports all these from day 1

petrescatraian , (edited )
@petrescatraian@libranet.de avatar

Thanks! I'll check it out. Foobar is fine and does a lot of things that I do not see other players doing. What I didn't like was the fact that it has no adaptive icon and there is no way to display the lyrics of a song. Plus that I was looking for something that was following the material design guidelines more.

Edit: just checked it. Seems like it's not properly reading some artist tags, so it cannot find them:

i.postimg.cc/Y249YqV3/Screensh…

Plus, in Foobar, a split album is displayed in both artist's views. Poweramp simply creates a different artist entry, just for the split:

i.postimg.cc/66DQ0xxN/Screensh…

I did not check how an album with multiple discs is displayed, but I still find Foobar's library management capabilities unlike any other's.

I do have to admit that Poweramp has a cool interface though.

search results will become secondary as they push their service

Oh, so they're gonna emphasize less on search results and more onto their half-arsed services that they're axing from time to time? This is so Google of them.

Can somebody explain me how OPML works for RSS? Are these files usually imported into the RSS reader apps or are they used where they are? @electro1 Which app more exactly? I'm not aware of Friendica having any mobile app. The web version seems more than fine. If, however, you want a dedicated mobile app, then check out Relatica.

Friendica also supports the Mastodon API, so you can also log in with pretty much any Mastodon app.

@electro1 they do need to update their website a bit fwiw. Friendiqa is not that great at all. But no, that's not an official one either. They do not have any first-party app at all.

Edit: You can also find a help section wherever you might choose to create an account, or a wiki available at wiki.friendi.ca/ with more information.

And if you want to get more familiar with how Friendica works, you can also check out (and share) anubis2814's videos on YouTube on the topic:

@GadgeteerZA it's not really that new, it's been around for as long as Mastodon got the first boost back in Autumn 2022 (at least that's when I first heard about it, something like that). There's plenty of other microblogging servers out there, as microblogging is overwhelmingly served via AP and not only. There's even a Nextcloud app for that.

@jeena I only use DeepL to translate and that's it. I also started taking notes in .md files, so that could make for a good use case in the future if there was an AI that I could use without connecting to the internet (e.g. to only let me tell stuff based on the files I got). Otherwise I am pretty reticent on AI. Perhaps I watched too many fiction movies, but I am afraid it will become too sentient and somehow escape the human oversight, thus creating havoc in our lives.

@hedge Wow, this is big. Fedi needs more macroblogging options to compensate for the domination of Mastodon and other microblogging platforms. And also it being another corporate actor like Meta, but smaller, will create the incentive for Meta to play more fairly in the long run and not EEE the Fediverse with Threads, just like it did with XMPP by integrating it under Facebook almost a decade ago. This is exactly what we need to become and stay mainstream.

Apple pulls WhatsApp, Threads and Signal from app store in China (www.washingtonpost.com)

Apple has complied with the Chinese government's request to remove several popular communication apps from its app store, including WhatsApp, Threads, Signal, and Telegram, due to national security concerns. This action was taken following a directive from the Cyberspace Administration of China. These apps have been crucial for...

petrescatraian ,
@petrescatraian@libranet.de avatar

@Stillhart yea, you can, but that means trusting the third party providing the apk. Besides that, China also has a big power over the internet. They could outright block the apps from working altogether only by cutting the connection. Especially with Threads and WhatsApp where you cannot choose any proxy within the app.

In fact, I think they already did it.

petrescatraian ,
@petrescatraian@libranet.de avatar

@sonori the problem is that Discord tried to mix social media with Instant Messaging. This is not something that's working well. On one of them, you just talk to people, ask them about stuff and whatnot (this is why it is also called direct messaging). On other, you want to have stuff that is rather more easily accessible and has various other social functions - and it is also designed around it.

You also have a place where you can centralize all discussion (i.e. the feed) so you can at least get an idea of what is going on.

Discord (as a messaging app, primarily) is totally unfit for these tasks.

@hedge I dislike Facebook, so that's why I am here. But if the only way to stay in touch with people I know irl is on Threads, so be it. Either my server federates with Threads, or there's one more Threads user in this world.

Well, at least that's what many people would choose, imo. On the flip side, if Facebook itself would be federated and my server would federate with it, I would simply delete my Facebook account. Period.

I get that Meta is an outrageous organization, but people seem to forget the purpose of these platforms altogether - which is communication. And communications happen when other people use the same platform as well. And okay, let's say I have a managed Fedi server (which is the most hassle-free option of self-hosting, leaving money and legal stuff aside). What am I gonna do if, e.g. I get a Tinder match and the girl is asking me for my Facebook or Insta? Should I say something like "hey, I don't have either, but make an account on this random-ass website where only a few hundred people are there as well, and you don't know anyone of them personally"?

If people want to get people to leave the Meta platforms for Fedi and whatnot, then federating with Threads and educating people this way would actually be a better option imo.

petrescatraian ,
@petrescatraian@libranet.de avatar

@flora_explora that's why you have to get as many people here before the last e phase ;)

petrescatraian ,
@petrescatraian@libranet.de avatar

@FfaerieOxide huh? How is that supposed to be an analogy? You are infinitely safer interacting with a Threads user here than by actually using Threads itself. Like, I don't get it. Do you guys want to get more people on the Fediverse? Do you want to convince your friends or just turn the Fediverse into the default way of communicating with people so that if you meet a new person at a cafe or a bar to simply ask "hey, what's your fedi address?" without them giving you a weird stare and ask you what's that thing? Or are you just implying that we should just have, like, our own castle, where only we can socialize online and the other people would simply be some foreigners of some sort?

Yes, that change can happen even in time. But with a social network like Threads joining in with hundreds of millions of people you have the opportunity to show, at least to people you know, but not only, live, what it is like to get on a platform that respects your privacy, doesn't bother you with ads of any sort, have a more sane feed that you as a user can control, and still keep up with the latest stuff they care about. Threads was never and never will be about all this stuff.

Sure, they will try all their best to, e.g. rank you lower in the feed or do a Pixelfed thing on whatever. Or some people will look at you like a Linux promoter or something. But if more people in the mainstream see the Fediverse as a valid platform and not some sort of a niche thing that geeks and hackers like to use, then they'll be more likely to join.

What many of you fail to understand is that Meta joining in is an opportunity to freely advertise the Fediverse to the masses. Sure, not the whole 100 mln. or so Threads users will join, but imo, in terms of user numbers, this part of the Fediverse not owned by Meta will have a lot to gain. And when that happens, we'll have a lot more leverage if/when they do nasty stuff. Or just shut their federation for good.

And one more thing: I get those that are defederating from Meta by principle, because of how Meta behaves as a company. But defederating with Meta strictly because of the bad users there simply implies that all of those 100 mln. users are bad faith. Are you really believing that 100 mln. people in this world among of which some of your friends and family members are all transphobes, homophobes, nazis etc.? If so, then you have a pretty gloomy view of the world.

I mean, sure, many users will be problematic (as there are on many Fedi instances that one might or might not have blocked) which would need the ban hammer a lot. Probably even temporary defederation untill the situation gets resolved.

But I like to think that these people are a minority in this whole world. 🙂
@hedge @flora_explora

petrescatraian ,
@petrescatraian@libranet.de avatar

@FfaerieOxide I think we all have our needs and wants, out of which all need to be addressed in one way or another.

The very fact we're having this discussion is a healthy sign that it's okay to have different opinions on such topics - no matter how wrong it sounds.

There is no one-size-fits-all, despite some people like FediTips/FediFollows/FediWhatever is thinking about people.

And bad people and entities exist all the time. They existed before Facebook, they existed with Facebook (and Meta), and they will exist after Meta as well. Just check any blocklist of any okay server and you will spot them.

If you know them IRL, you can tell them IRL to get off of facebook.

This didn't work, sadly. And it doesn't work because such platforms make you think that they are the default. That nothing exists beside them or that if it does, it's either dangerous or empty. Don't you even see that the first question someone joining Mastodon is "who is also there?". This is a good opportunity to show them that someone is there...

@hedge

petrescatraian ,
@petrescatraian@libranet.de avatar

@FfaerieOxide people hate Facebook. Or Meta. They hate their policy, they hate how their services (don't) work, yet they stay there because everyone is there. If they see people that are not there, I think they are more likely to make the switch (not that will do, but more likely).

not legitimize it's use

I never said that people should use Threads to join the Fediverse. I said that people who already use Threads can be more easily convinced to join this place.

But if you think a good chunk of people will just randomly browse the web, stumble upon these weird sites called kbin.social or libranet.de and understand how they work from the get-go, then I have bad news for you.

That is, unless you just feel better staying in a cloister castle anyway.

In which case, you should understand that not anyone wants this. 🙂

@hedge @flora_explora

petrescatraian ,
@petrescatraian@libranet.de avatar

@FfaerieOxide that's not how the perception of the masses works, though.

@hedge

petrescatraian ,
@petrescatraian@libranet.de avatar

@FfaerieOxide So you realize something is not on Threads by the fact that it is not on Threads? On this logic, I also heard about a bearded man bringing presents on 25th of December each year.

@hedge

petrescatraian ,
@petrescatraian@libranet.de avatar

@FfaerieOxide Tell them to join the Fediverse from the Fediverse 😀

Like, simply, if you tell them that they can access all the content they want on Threads (because that's why they're there), while not being there, and also see it demoed from you, the person already on the non-Meta Fediverse, they are more likely to make the switch, especially if they encounter any regular issue like being wrongly banned or having network issues.

Hell, even if they create backup accounts here, it's still a partial win for us - they can switch back any time back and forth and see what fits them better. ;)

@hedge @flora_explora

petrescatraian ,
@petrescatraian@libranet.de avatar

The Fediverse is the Fediverse by not being Meta. You are arguing for destroying the Fediverse for everyone by waving Meta in.

By waving Meta or Meta users? If it's the latter, I do not see anything wrong. Regular instance moderation still applies.

My point is that the focus should be on user growth of the regular Fediverse, so that Meta would have a harder time applying EEE and making an actual impact with it. (De)federation of Threads should be less of an important topic. But user growth should be the numero uno priority.

Those are my 2c on this. Hope I made myself clear.

Why do you keep putting my and others' @ in your messages? If that's a your instance thing it's weird.

Yes, I'm on Friendica, and this is the default behavior, sorry. This seems to be a way to be compatible with Mastodon, which uses tags to notify people of new replies (silly, I know, but someone at Mastodon decided that this is the way to go).

When replying to someone, I usually write the comment after the 1st tag because it's easier and makes more sense in such a discussion. Sorry if that bothered you. I am now on my PC and I can delete them easier 😁

petrescatraian ,
@petrescatraian@libranet.de avatar

I kinda dislike the word as well. Makes it seem like it's sort of a separate and special side of the Fediverse, when it isn't. It's just as interconnected and interoperable with other Fediverse software like Mastodon (microblogging) or Friendica (macroblogging) the same way as others are. In fact, here I am, replying to you from Friendica.

Imo people could just call them as they are: bulletin boards. Or just something involving groups, idk (because that's what they are, mostly).

@Blaze I kept my last phone for about 5 years, and it was still quite usable when I left it. But I just lacked space, and I had to be picky even about the apps I needed. Now I plan on keeping the one I have until I no longer receive updates.

Should I *GASP* create a reddit account so I can get support from Tuta(nota)?

Because they're not answering my support queries, and I've been having connectivity issues since the last two versions or so. Most of the time they've been pretty good, but if their desktop client can't sync to their servers it's of no use to me. Is anyone else having this problem?...
