OneDrive automatically backups folders in Windows 11 without users' permissions (windowsreport.com)

According to the latest reports, Windows 11 has made an independent choice by automatically turning on OneDrive folder backup for Desktop, Pictures, Documents, Music, and Video folders without your permission. This signifies that, whether you approve or not, everything is becoming coordinated with the cloud....

pufferfisherpowder ,

Funnily, or sadly enough, OneDrive integration is one of the things I miss from my windows days. It's just extremely convenient how it's integrated into explorer and office. And how well the smart/ on-demand sync works. I can't find a setup to replicate this on Linux.

That being said I don't intend to go back and this move is insane.

pufferfisherpowder ,

Thank you! I thought was going nuts. It's been such a long time since I had think about whether something is synced or a way to set it up. With OneDrive I could just grab the files I needed from the cloud and push them off the drive if I needed space. It really took away any hassle about sync.

It really feels like moving to Linux is a step back 10 years when it comes to cloud storage.
I also tried nextcloud but the smart / on-demand/ virtual file system is experimental in the Linux client and doesn't work as seemlesly as OneDrive. Besides being turned off every time I restart.

pufferfisherpowder ,

Thanks! I looked at it but I would like to stop giving money to MS. So my plan is to ultimately move away from OneDrive.

pufferfisherpowder ,

Yes, but I can't get the virtual file system/on-demand sync to work properly. It turn off every time I reboot. I gave up after a while since it's experimental for now anyway.

pufferfisherpowder ,

The client works fine, it's just the virtual file system option that turns off after a reboot.

Google has a deal with reddit as well. https://www.reuters.com/technology/reddit-ai-content-licensing-deal-with-google-sources-say-2024-02-22/?utm_source=reddit.com

But I don't think it's just an issue with the dataset. It's the false promise of these LLMs having a fucking clue what a good search result is and what is not. They don't. They are just good at creating text that sounds plausible. That's not what searching for factually correct information is about though.

pufferfisherpowder ,

We need to tax the fuck out of the dIsRupTIve vultures called venture capitalists. The only disruption they cause is offering an existing service with extra little value returned to society and workers until the competition is dead. Then prices are raised and society gets squeezed a second time. It's fucking disgusting. The raised tax on these fuckers can then be used for public transport, amongst other things.

So, no, we don't get public transport from banning Uber doing this. But Uber wouldn't do this (or exist) if the investors of this shit company would pay their fair share and if Uber had to follow proper labor laws.

Powertoys Run is really good as well, and developed by MS which is just en extra layer of absurdism considering how bad the start menu search is. I mapped powertoys Run to the windows key and have not looked at the start menu since, literally.

pufferfisherpowder ,

Yeah and while Elon is the fucking worst I assume not everyone knows that he is the Tesla man. It's incredible actually how much he's intertwined with the brand. I would totally buy a Toyota or whatever and I couldn't tell you the name of their CEO, nor of any other car manufacturer, nor would I look up who they are beforehand.

Granted the poster above is on Lemmy so I assume he knows more about musky boy than he would like.

pufferfisherpowder ,

How do you like it better than chat gpt? Isn't it the same thing?

Bike infrastructure can be combined with other modes of transport. My daily commute is 56km in a mix of bike, bike in train, bike. Around 45min per way. I'm certainly not the only one either.

pufferfisherpowder ,

You are indeed delirious it seems! There's absolutely no way to average 30kph in a city. Not even with an E-Bike capped at 45kph max. Even on flat open ground, no traffic, no traffic lights, stops, whatever, a 30kph average is a approaching a road bike training average. It's an utterly impossible speed for a normal commuter on a city bike.

pufferfisherpowder ,

It's not too bad, really! Provided the trains are on time. And the fact that it takes away from the freedom of a bike only commute. As in, the thing I love about biking is that it's all up to me. If I leave on time and my equipment is maintained well, there's few things, short of a flat or crash, or a similar unforeseen condition, that will slow me down. And if I need to go faster I go harder. Absolutely love biking past a good traffic jam.

pufferfisherpowder ,

I didn't say anything, but the post you're originally referring to is not talking about max speeds either, but ranges. I.e. average speeds. In a hilly city you might well reach 30 or even 60kph downhill. But it's then even less likely to hit that as an average, at some point you will have to go up that hill again.

Totally agree on changing the view of city planners though. Even if I'm lucky enough to live in a city where this already very much reality.

Nah, a Chromecast with Google TV is a super cheap and reliable way to sail the high seas. Stremio, VPN, some kind of debrid service. Works better than any legal streaming service my friend told me. Not that I would ever try to hurt the poor studios.

pufferfisherpowder ,

On the Chromecast, one of the other reasons I got one. There's some localised content I get to access like that.

I considered a VPN on the router but a) the router provided by our ISP doesn't support that, so it would be another investment and b) I didn't want to introduce a potential point of headache for when I'm not around. I.e. my non tech savvy partner having trouble with the VPN.

If you think cleaning is picking up after yourself you haven't actually cleaned. If I had just a tiny bit more disposable income I'd love to spend it on someone properly cleaning the apartment.

Between two full time jobs, commute, and a toddler there is not much time, much less energy, to clean beyond a quick vacuum, and wipe down of the bathroom once a week.
