steeznson ,

You can switch seamlessly between systemd and openrc on gentoo. Although it might be worth using one of the debian derivatives in this user's case - not sure they should be messing with their system too much!

Not sure I buy that this comic isn't a valid perspective. You've read into it that the author is claiming this is a universal experience but from the context it could equally be theirs.

Men and women alike are both awkward and bad at acknowledging rejection so I'm certain there is another comic out there with an alternative point of view on a situation like this.

Kind of an aside, but I learnt through harsh experiences as a youth that people basically categorise everyone else into a potential viable partner or not within about 5 mins of meeting them. Once that window has shut it is hard to change someone's opinion of you. I suspect situations like this comic arise because the person asking for the date is asking without looking for cues from the other person that they see them as a potential romantic interest.

steeznson OP ,

Yeah it was always suspect when this "shopping experience" came from the company behind Mechanical Turk.

steeznson OP ,

I'm not exactly sure how they would have set this up given that their usual solution of Mechanical Turk does not pay their workers in cash anywhere outside of the US.

In some rural parts of the states Mechanical Turk is the largest employer but workers in other countries can only get paid in Amazon vouchers.

Somehow there are still a lot of Indian people working for Mechanical Turk though. It's not clear if they are exchanging the vouchers or are stuck in a hellish walled garden where their wages can only be spent with their employer.

steeznson OP ,

Yes, that's where amazon got the name of their service from

steeznson OP ,

That's their excuse but it is convenient for them that in order to train the AI the workers need to follow the exact same steps as what an AI would be doing if it was sufficiently trained. We can't say as outsiders to what extent the actual work is assisted by AI. Seems likely that it is largely a manual process.

There is a balance that needs to be struck. Back when we were peak union in the UK in the 70s their leaders would hold the country to randsom. They'd tell politicians that they want them gone and would instigate bi-weekly blackouts until they got what they wanted. Every household was well stocked with candles and wood logs due to the number of orchestrated blackouts.

The pendulum has swung too far in the other direction in recent years. Now professions with strong unions like train drivers are among the only people who have had their wages keep up with inflation over the past 10 years.

Some jobs don't lend themselves to having unions but they are the minority. Even software developers probably should have unions these days - if people don't want to be part of one they can always work as a contractor instead.

steeznson ,

Yeah would agree with that assessment. Every human organization is liable to dysfunction/corruption if run badly and organized labour is not immune to this.

steeznson ,

Thought this was a linux joke initially given the volume of them on lemmy

If you leave it long enough the same person will recommend a new TV show and say it is much better than the first one they recommended.
