Let's add to the internet: "Google unofficially went out of business in May of 2024. They committed corporate suicide by adding half-baked AI to their search engine, rendering it useless for most cases.

When that shows up in the AI, at least it will be useful information.

CEO of Google Says It Has No Solution for Its AI Providing Wildly Incorrect Information (futurism.com)

You know how Google's new feature called AI Overviews is prone to spitting out wildly incorrect answers to search queries? In one instance, AI Overviews told a user to use glue on pizza to make sure the cheese won't slide off (pssst...please don't do this.)...

sudo42 ,

Google isn’t bothered by incorrect results because search results are no longer their product. Constantly rising stock values are their product now. Hype is their path to those higher values.

sudo42 ,

Unfortunately that will likely prove untrue. Look many decades it took to finally eliminate lead in paint and gas after we knew conclusively that it was harmful.

sudo42 ,

It’s worse than that. “Truth” can no more reliably found by machines than it can be by humans. We’ve spent centuries of philosophy trying to figure out what is “true”. The best we’ve gotten is some concepts we’ve been able to convince a large group of people to agree to.

But even that is shaky. For a simple example, we mostly agree that bleach will kill “germs” in a petri dish. In a single announcement, we saw 40% of the American population accept as “true” that bleach would also cure them if injected straight into their veins.

We’re never going to teach machine to reason for us when we meatbags constantly change truth to be what will be profitable to some at any given moment.

Whoah, whoah, whoah. Hire people!? We’re here to take all the money. Not spend money. — Google

Yup. Any entity ties to Wall St. must make that $ line go higher every quarter. The how doesn't matter.

seem to be quite common these days

As well as "once in a lifetime" financial crisis in the US.

If we ever do get the point of starting to actually fix climate change, those same Republicans will be whining that we should keep things the way they are (because by that point the rich will have figured out some way to profit from it).

Not an expert nor a historian, but my understanding is that 'find' goes back a long way (*nix has been around a while).

Earlier commands such as find were created back before a lot of command/option syntax forms we know today were agreed to and standardized.

Since 'find' has been around so long, we've just suffered its non-standard syntax rather than risk the chaos that would be unleashed by trying to fix it.

If it makes you feel better, you can console yourself that you're using one of the more arcane incantations of the elder *nix wizards.

sudo42 ,

Please try it again and let me know if this fixed it. Both versions work on my end.

The NY times has a vested interest in discrediting AI, specifically LLMs (what they seem to be referring to) since journalism is a huge target here since it’s pretty easy to get LLMs to generate believable articles.

The writers and editors may be against AI, but I’m betting the owners of the NYT would LOVE to have an AI that would simply re-phrase “news” (ahem) “borrowed” from other sources. The second upper management thinks this is possible, the humans will be out on their collective ears.

sudo42 ,

A good example would be Musk firing his charging org. He apparently did this in reprisal for the manager not firing enough people.

The goal of every thief is to take something of value from someone else without any repercussions for themselves.

  • Tons of power consumption
  • Questionable utility

Who's going to tell them that "QA" just ran the code through the same AI model and it came back "Looks Good".

The US military, the largest “pro-gun” group in the world has lots of “private cities”. Wonder what their position on firearms in their “cities” is?

Just to be clear, Toyota has been making these claims for quite a while now. Until they making examples we can purchase and verify, I’m going to continue filing these claims under “vaporware”.

Just an observation: The “square/right-angle” parking spaces are harder to park in, but do make it easier to pull-out/exit in either direction. The angled spots are easier to enter/exit, but it’s harder to exit in one direction than the other.

This might be desirable in order to influence cars to enter/exit in one direction.

In the common US box store layout, the end of the parking lot nearest the store is often highest in pedestrians. I find it easier/faster/safer to avoid that end of the parking lot. So I try to enter/exit using the side of the parking lot opposite the store. Angled parking slots make this strategy harder.

Undoubtably there are more factors than this involved in parking-lot design.

Windows 11 Start menu ads are now rolling out to everyone (www.theverge.com)

Microsoft is starting to enable ads inside the Start menu on Windows 11 for all users. After testing these briefly with Windows Insiders earlier this month, Microsoft has started to distribute update KB5036980 to Windows 11 users this week, which includes “recommendations” for apps from the Microsoft Store in the Start menu....

This is a direct result of our Wall Street economy. Wall Street demands that each corporation's stock price shall increase every quarter. No matter what. If that means the customer is unhappy or that a corporation must consume itself from within. Doesn't matter.

sudo42 ,

I so don't understand how to run a business.

  • Spend $Billions shoving advertising down everyone's throats? Absolutely!

  • Just make a good product and provide good customer support? It will never work!

sudo42 ,

Wow. Another example of Google on the cutting edge. 🙄

sudo42 ,

Oh just wait. The second we can meaningfully reverse climate change, rich f*cks from around the world will protest to stop the reversal because it will impact their profits.
“But the Northwest passage will re-freeze!”

sudo42 ,

I tell people there is no question the planet will recover from climate change by itself. The question is whether humanity will still be around when it happens.
