A third player is absolutely welcome to the game but their share is for now still small on Windows.

The Arc Alchemist dGPU bringup has shown the world just how difficult graphics driver software is. They've made excellent progress lately in key areas (on both Windows and Linux) but there are are still many odd gaps to fill.

Battlemage mobile looks pretty exciting, mind you.

Like AMD, they use a kernel module and their user space drivers are in Mesa. If anything, you may have a better OOTB experience with Intel graphics on distros that have more recent packages, like Fedora.

vikingtons ,
@vikingtons@lemmy.world avatar

There's no stupid questions here - there's absolutely nothing intuitive about computer ecosystems 😅

vikingtons ,
@vikingtons@lemmy.world avatar

This may take time but Intel have extremely deep pockets, they understand the value of presence in this market, I'm sure they can and will stick to it.

vikingtons ,

Good to know, though same could be said for ROCm + HIP for AMD. Gets a bit weird as you generally want that for OCL support too.

AMD has preemptively dropped support for Windows 10 on its new Ryzen AI 300 Series chips (www.tomshardware.com)

In another attempt to convince us that "AI PCs" are somehow fundamentally different from the PCs we're already using, AMD has officially dropped support for Windows 10 from its new AMD Ryzen AI 300 Series platform. This can be observed by glancing at the official AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 specs page, which now only lists 64-bit...

Isn't the same true for the 7950X3D?

I doubt you would have many issues using win10 on this platform if you wanted to.

vikingtons ,
@vikingtons@lemmy.world avatar

I mean, sure but even phoenix based OEM platforms tend to ship with win11 anyways, right? Did any of those release with win10 ootb?

vikingtons ,
@vikingtons@lemmy.world avatar

I'd recommend separate physical disks if possible. Set your boot order via uefi

vikingtons ,
@vikingtons@lemmy.world avatar

It's not very intuitive but it isn't so bad once you're familiar; you can take a look at this whenever's convenient for you.

When you boot the system, you should briefly see your BIOS splash screen, along with the key combo to get into your BIOS setup menu. Let us know which mainboard vendor you have and we may be able to tell you in advance (For Asus, it's usually F2, for Gigabyte its the Delete key, for MSI it might be F12 etc). I just mash the specified key when prompted until I'm in.

There's usually also a key that you can hit to select a temporary boot device (I.e. I can hit F12 on my gigabyte board to select any OS detected by the BIOS, not just boot into the top entry).

Once you're in, have a look for the 'Boot' section. You should have the capability to define your boot order. These entries can consist of traditional disks connected via SATA/SCSI/m.2, USB drives, network locations etc.

You can arrange this boot order however you like.

I would also recommended temporarily disconnecting any existing drives when installing an OS on your system (e.g.: Windows attempts to store its bootloader on SATA 0 by default, even if the OS isn't destined for that drive).

Strix Point is a monolithic die APU, though to your point, it's comprised of a variety of IP (CPU, GPU, NPU, IO / SoC functionality) from across the business.

Strix Halo is rumoured to be a multi-chip product.

I don't quite understand it but it's adorable and I'm here for it.

here's hoping. would be a nightmare if it somehow reached the healthcare industry

These newer modules are lower profile than SODIMM, and do not carry the same frequency/ throughput and latency limitations. LPCAMM effectively eliminates the need to solder RAM to mobile platform main boards, though we'll see how vendors react.

AV1 decode is supported on the RTX 3000 series, encode + decode in the RTX 4000 series

For Intel Arc, AV1 encode + decode support is present on all Arc Alchemist GPUs,

For AMD, AV1 decode is on RX 6000 series, encode + decode on all RX 7000 series GPUs

As someone else has recommended, a low end Intel Arc alchemist GPU is pretty great for stuff like Jellyfin, very low price to entry for gfx accelerated AV1 transcoding.

vikingtons ,
@vikingtons@lemmy.world avatar

Can you tell us which GPU and driver versions?

I've been alright here so far with fedora workstation and silverblue, on both NV21 and Cezanne (amdgpu+mesa, no amdgpu-pro or amdvlk)

I deeply regret my pi5 purchase. Here I was hoping to use it as a low power application server but I cannot get Ethernet working reliably after a hot reboot. Seems to be a distro agnostic issue, though I acknowledge this could be a part failure.

vikingtons ,
@vikingtons@lemmy.world avatar

I'm glad it's working for you. I'm wondering if my issues will be resolved in the future by firmware upgrades (also holding out for uboot updates anyway). Not giving up on it just yet.

vikingtons ,
@vikingtons@lemmy.world avatar

That's not a bad idea. I can give that a try for sure. I'm guessing the power implications here are minimal as well?

vikingtons ,
@vikingtons@lemmy.world avatar

This sounds promising, thank you for the info

vikingtons ,
@vikingtons@lemmy.world avatar

No problem at all. I can try to measure this with a socket wattmeter I have lying around.

The power implications aren't likely to he a deal breaker, but I do love the idea of operating an application server at approx 7W (that said, the same power envelope is also achievable on certain x86-64 home server platforms now).

vikingtons ,
@vikingtons@lemmy.world avatar

That's my hope, as mentioned elsewhere I'm still awaiting uboot updates for broader OS support, so I guess I'm fine to hang on to it.

Perhaps I picked this up a little early, though it has been fun to tinker and benchmark with.

vikingtons ,
@vikingtons@lemmy.world avatar

You're right. There is on the raspberry pi forums, I've chimed in on the past, will need to check back in with it.

vikingtons ,
@vikingtons@lemmy.world avatar

That's a fair point. I'm using the first party power supply but I could experiment with several others.

Google fires 28 employees after protest over Israel cloud contract (www.theverge.com)

Google fired 28 employees in connection with sit-in protests at two of its offices this week, according to an internal memo obtained by The Verge. The firings come after 9 employees were suspended and then arrested in New York and California on Tuesday....

There's FOSS apps from fdroid, fairemail or protonmail or something of the sort, CalyxOS or GrapheneOS (ironically targets the Pixel series primarily, though they sometimes sell these at a loss around the holiday season).

Helldivers 2 uses the autodesk stingray engine, which has generally been cussed for its jankiness

vikingtons ,
@vikingtons@lemmy.world avatar

I would add the caveat that since discord don't allow third party clients, you run the risk of getting your account banned for violating their ToS.

I'm fine with this personally, but it's reasonable to not be so keen if your account is important to you.

vikingtons ,
@vikingtons@lemmy.world avatar

I've been using it for a decent amount of time since the first party client doesn't support wayland.

You're right in that it's probably a slim chance they'll target you, though I don't really care about getting banned in any case.

I wonder if they have a way of highlighting users who use vesktop / vencord to spoof access to nitro features like high bitrate streaming.

vikingtons ,
@vikingtons@lemmy.world avatar

This is good to know, much appreciated

Apex Legends streamers surprised to find aimbot and other hacks added to their PCs in the middle of major competition via anti-cheat software (www.pcgamer.com)

Wow it finally happened. So glad I switched to steam running on linux mint last week. I refused to install helldivers because it wanted to install some no holds barred god level permissions anti-cheat software. Windows 11 was the last straw for me. Good times.....

can this be hidden via registry or group policy?

@vikingtons@lemmy.world avatar

Good question, but I've not had that issue so far

I typically use yeti ramblers with a metal bases on them, though I've set ceramic mugs down on them too and they've not stuck. might depend on the drink a little?

vikingtons ,
@vikingtons@lemmy.world avatar

Maybe but I do spill a bit every now and then. Can't speak for the regular ceramic mugs, though that's a bit of a rarity and they just have herbal tea

I find it difficult to sleep on my back. I used to sleep on my side but I think that lead to a bit of QL aggravation.

Super cosy sleeping on my front though.

vikingtons ,
@vikingtons@lemmy.world avatar

sorry - quadratus lumborum. A deep abdominal muscle which tends to cause complaints of lower back pain when its tight.

vikingtons ,
@vikingtons@lemmy.world avatar

no worries. definitely worth looking into & looking after.

vikingtons ,
@vikingtons@lemmy.world avatar

Glad you have it figured out!

I'd recommend checking in with a professional (GP, physiotherapist, sports masseuse) if you need to get that tightness worked through. You can try get at it yourself with something small and firm like a lacrosse or golf ball but it's pretty tricky to get at this muscle yourself given how deep it is. I've managed to relieve it on occasion lying on my back with a lacrosse ball wedged under. I move it around the area in a gentle circular motion for a little while, then bring the knee of the tight side to my chest, then extend it again.

Tight hamstrings and sleepy glutes exacerbate the issue, and I'd recommend a short routine of lower body static stretches (28-30s each) for your QLs, hams hips and so on before bed (and maybe some shorter, more active mobility exercises when you wake up too). kinda boring on its own but pretty great with a podcast on.

And as you've already found, staying mobile helps a great deal. if you work behind a desk, it could be worth looking into something adjustable so you can stand whenever you'd like.

@vikingtons@lemmy.world avatar

I don't know if you can really replace android with android.

How does this compare to Graphene and Calyx?

E: I don't see any public repos for the ROM, but I guess that could be a thing later? No mention in the article or their website on if they plan on open sourcing it, but I'm not at my desk right now to check thoroughly enough.

vikingtons ,
@vikingtons@lemmy.world avatar

That's fair enough. Diversity from OEMs would be nice, sort of reminds me of the cyanogen co days...

vikingtons ,
@vikingtons@lemmy.world avatar

To be fair to them, techbro audience is a solid bet
