Poe's law strikes again, you forgot this: /s

wanderingmagus ,

The military, among both officers and enlisted, is actually pretty split politically, and a good number can and will refuse to obey an order they perceive to be unconstitutional, or outright commit mutiny. For all that the military warns about insider threats, it is also woefully unprepared to deal with them as well. Military servicemembers are also significantly stricter with the use of deadly force than police from my experience, although that may simply be due to my having served in the SSBN force.

SearXNG works all right for me, and it's free. I've also heard good things about the paid service Kagi.

wanderingmagus ,

So why do locks exist, if society runs on how people should behave? Why do we have a court system, if we assume no crimes will ever be committed? Why do we have laws?

wanderingmagus ,

Don't know how it's going to go for you, but Mint has been going really well for me gaming-wise on an Alienware with Nvidia RTX. Pretty much all the Steam games I care about work, and all my Blizzard games through Lutris. All through simple GUIs, and if you like the Windows feel and setup, there's a Windows 10 theme you can try out, and tutorials on how to get a Windows style mouse cursor too. Again - all up to you, but it worked really well for me and is amazingly customizable. Just... remember to do Timeshift backups regularly, just in case. You never know if you'll need one.

You might be today's lucky 10,000, but have you heard of the Domesticated Silver Fox?

Please, for the love of God, VOTE! (pawb.social)

I don't like Biden either, but anyone with half a brain knows there are two choices in the 2020 election. If we had a sane voting system, voting third party might be worth it, but as it stands, no one but you knows your favorite candidate exists and unless you want to become their campaign manager that will still be true in...

wanderingmagus ,

Honestly? Posts like yours make me consider voting for Trump just to show the world the consequences of your attitude. Maybe after you and everyone you love end up hunted down by the death squads or put on a train, the idea that maybe, just maybe, you should've reconsidered while you still had the chance will enter your head. Fuck it, I already enlisted in the military, might as well wear the jackboot while I'm at it.

wanderingmagus ,

Y'all were the ones saying not even to bother voting because the whole thing's rigged and hopeless, so if you can't beat 'em, fuck it, join 'em. As long as you're not in a position of power when the big guy gets taken down, it doesn't look like anyone ever cares, and you might even get a standing ovation in Canada.

Israel quietly rolled out a mass facial recognition program in the Gaza Strip (www.theverge.com)

Israel has deployed a mass facial recognition program in the Gaza Strip, creating a database of Palestinians without their knowledge or consent, The New York Times reports. The program, which was created after the October 7th attacks, uses technology from Google Photos as well as a custom tool built by the Tel Aviv-based company...

wanderingmagus OP ,

From what I remember, AI facial recognition tech was already being used by police and agencies worldwide, like the FBI, PRC police etc, or am I misinformed? I remember something about Chinese and American facial recognition software.

wanderingmagus OP ,

And I wonder how many of those 95% have already used misapplied AI facial recognition to justify FISA court warrants for stalking investigating random people suspected terrorists?

wanderingmagus OP ,

Honestly with enshittification "technological dystopia" sounds like exactly where we already are. Now, if only implants weren't being R&D'd by Muskrat and there were some open source non-invasive version...

wanderingmagus ,

Honestly, with the way geopolitics is going right now, outright deglobalization sometime this century seems inevitable. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if the current tensions turn into de facto Cold War II, with regional blocs that outright ban any trade or positive discourse about the other side, and hold high profile hearings on dissidents suspected of following the ideology of the other side.

wanderingmagus ,

The problem is that "they" live in the same world as you. Which means that you'd be going right down with them, along with all your loved ones. Is that really what you want?

Threads is automatically hiding comments that mention Pixelfed (mastodon.social)

For anyone wondering if Threads and Facebook at large will be a fine neighbor in the space and compatible with other apps/services in the fediverse: they’re already automatically hiding comments that mention Pixelfed https://mastodon.social/@dansup/112126250737482807

Nobody is saying to shut down any instance, only that we, and others on the platform who think likewise, would like to not have to see those instances. Nobody is saying to shut down Truth Social or Pawoo or Baraag, for instance, despite having severe disagreements with those instances - we just decided, on our instances, not to federated with them. You aren't obligated to agree with us - you can make your own instance with your own rules, as others have said, or switch to an instance accommodating to your beliefs. But at the same time, it doesn't mean the rest of us have to listen. Think of defederation like blocking - I'm sure you have some sort of block list for trolls, spammers and bots. Same thing, but for an instance.
