@the_other_jon it's been a while since I used it (I don't really do road trips often) but it was fantastic every time I used it.

I just planned the trip using the web UI and then navigated from each suggested charger to the next one, and it nailed the SOCs within a few percent every time

For a long time I couldn’t imagine a world where Twitter wasn’t a daily hangout for me, and now my account is deleted. I couldn’t imagine a web without Google and now I don’t use it because they ruined it. I never used Facebook much, but it was a powerhouse for years and now it's a shit-filled shambling zombie.

These digital behemoths, they’re temporary. And their time is almost up.

Hello everyone!

We have some unfortunate news. @fastmail has made the decision to lay off 60% of our bargaining unit, including our bargaining committee, in a surprise restructure while we were in the middle of contract negotiations. Fortunately, we were able to negotiate for a much better severance package than we would have gotten had we not unionized when we did. We are grateful for the work that the Communication Workers of America put in on our behalf to get us the best deal they could.

“On the energy demands of "AI" • Buttondown”

https://buttondown.email/maiht3k/archive/on-the-energy-demands-of-ai/

> If you use clean energy sources for that added demand, you've used up some of the clean energy supply that could have gone somewhere else. Until we actually have more clean energy than we need, throwing lots of it at training and using "generative AI" models is just going to make the climate crisis worse.

Regarding Slack's announcement* that they will be "reducing [their] data storage offering for the free version of Slack [and] deleting messages and files more than one year old from free workspaces", I don't know.

One thing I became much more aware of after I joined the fediverse over a year ago is the unsustainable "infinite growth" of our online spaces that we all got used to thanks to corporate social media.

An AI thing I'm watching play out at another org:

1: Expert A, with a deep understanding of a nuanced and difficult problem answers a question they've been given, offering several options.

2: Director B, recipient, uses an AI to summarize it and then runs it up to leadership saying, "A says this." That generated summary is subtly and very wrong.

3: A is now being held responsible for plans made based on B's AI-generated and very wrong rewriting of his recommendations.

Fun times.

Sometimes people ask me (as a historian of the period) about the super rich in Renaissance Florence, whether the art/culture/science boom was an example of trickle-down working. (A) Florence had a wealth tax, (B) its richest man Palla Strozzi had the equivalent of only $250 million. Want more Leonardos? Tax the Rich. 🎨🧑‍🎨🖌🎭🔭🖼📚📐🏛🎻💰

"Growth" as a concept does not have to be viewed solely through the lens of Silicon Valley, venture capital firms, or capitalism in general. In the context of the network: some people here, myself included, want to see the network develop along enough to sufficiently challenge the status quo, and dethrone mainstream social networks.

For the to thrive, we inevitably have to bring in more people, new communities, and new ways of doing things. We need to build towards better concepts for user agency, privacy, and control. We need to also embrace the fun stuff that brought us here in the first place.

A non-zero part of Mastodon's user community has effectively modeled itself on a kind of social Puritanism that is super unfun to be around. It's gotten so bad that it's a meme at this point. Just imagine a stereotype of a stodgy librarian who tells you to CW your own lived experiences because they don't want to see it, and you're already halfway there.

There's this wild idea that any kind of commerce or barter, any kind of exhange between hands that isn't the most threadbare mutual aid, is forbidden and bad and going to make this place worse somehow. We're a network predicated on GoFundMe's and vast amounts of unpaid labor for hosting and moderation.

leah ,

The amount of FediFetcher instances scraping chaos.social is alarming. They all come from different Azure IPs because it's the recommended way to run it. Github reports: 1.361 deployments. We also see massive scraping from the TOR Network and scraping of RSS Feeds from SerendeputyBot. That sucks!

trwnh ,
@trwnh@mastodon.social avatar

@dumpsterqueer @heluecht @leah funny thing is that replies collection actually isn't part of activitypub. it's part of activitystreams instead. there are no side effects for receiving a Create of an object with inReplyTo set. https://w3id.org/fep/7458 is a FEP that is relevant here, describing actually using the replies collection. combine with https://w3id.org/fep/0391 for special collection proofs (stamps).

trwnh ,
@trwnh@mastodon.social avatar

@dumpsterqueer @heluecht @leah and hey, while we're looking at properties from activitystreams, i'd perennially point toward context and https://w3id.org/fep/7888 as a "parallel path" to fep-7458. instead of recursing through replies collections, we could have a singular context collection which represents the moderated conversation as a flat list. this allows inReplyTo as simply metadata.

This seems exactly correct. I make computational art, and I write about the same technical topics that LLMs aren’t terrible at. But I genuinely don’t think I’m losing my audience to the latest gpt model. It’s not my skill as a coder or an artist that makes people care about my work, it’s the connection between the author and the audience that makes it work. I’m not stackoverflow, I’m a human being who shows herself in her work

erlend ,
@erlend@writing.exchange avatar

@djnavarro exactly. I don’t read first and foremost for the beauty and flow of prose. I wanna know the author’s view; their opinion on the matter at hand.

LLMs are empirically devoid of any opinion, therefore I am thoroughly uninterested in anything an LLM has to say.
