this reminds me a bit of robosimian.

This needs to have a voiceover at 0:18, quietly asking "Do you have stairs in your house?"

"grandpa is protected at the bottom of the stairs"

It was kind of inevitable that sooner or later, their impressive robots would fall deep into the uncanny valley. I suspect they knew this particular aspect about the new Atlas robot would be the most controversial, which is why they posted it separately to judge reactions and for it not to distract from the main video showing its other capabilities later on.

I suspect that they deliberately played into the creepiness to make a more effective viral video

BlameThePeacock ,

Or it's just to show off the joint rotational abilities the thing is capable of compared to the hydraulic limitations that were part of Atlas.

Or both...

Did they have to make it as horrifying as a demonically possessed person in a movie?

Shit... Call this one Voldo, like from Soul Calibur. It moves exactly the same.

Sleekly ,

Oh my god they could not have made that more creepy

pr06lefs , (edited )

wonder why those elbows lock out instead of having 270 degrees of freedom. would be even more creepy. could have one arm in facing-forward mode and one in facing-backward mode, do the same with the feet. then googly eyes for the back of the head.

ed: a bit like fifield in prometheus

Can't tell if it's real or CGI....lol

😂 I saw this earlier and thought it was CGI, it's only when I saw some tech reviewers do videos about it that I thought it was safe to post

DdCno1 ,

Always check the source. This is Boston Dynamics' YouTube channel - and they are not in the business of faking things.

BlameThePeacock ,

Boston Dynamics' videos seem to make us disbelieve a lot, but so far it's all been real.
