I use the Roku and web client with subtitles regularly and haven't experienced any issues.

Have bug reports been opened for the clients you and your users are having issues with?

1hitsong Mod ,
@1hitsong@lemmy.ml avatar

🤘 You're good. I'd also suggest posting to the forum. There's an entire troubleshooting team for stuff like this.

1hitsong Mod ,
@1hitsong@lemmy.ml avatar

There's a pinned announcement post that I made yesterday. It should be at the top.

If I remember correctly, there was an issue that was/is being worked on, but it wouldn't get resolved until after the 10.9 feature cutoff date.

We didn't want to delay the 10.9 release to wait on it knowing 10.10 will be a fast follow.

🤘 33.6% here

Elon Musk says it's his turn to have the remote (www.engadget.com)

[Xitter] just announced a smart TV app for streaming video. Or, more accurately, that it claims it's building one, with absolutely no launch date mentioned. The appropriately-named [Xitter] TV wants to be “your go-to companion for a high-quality, immersive entertainment experience on a larger screen.”

Great... Now we'll need to make another client team in Jellyfin 😆

Listening is just watching with your ears.

And reading is watching in your mind... or something more clever 😆

Sorry, but as far as I'm aware, this isn't in anyone's plans to work on. I know it's not on mine. I think the consensus is to keep admin functions on the web client and let the Roku client simply be a user client.

You keep using that word and.... it's awesome.

jellyfish

A gelatinous animal in the sea that stings you.

Jellyfin?

A server & client software pair that allows you to have all your personal media available on demand. Movies, TV Shows, Music, Photos, Books, etc. All served from your server to a client device - Android, Roku, iOS, etc.

trick play is not a very good for that

What do you mean? Trick play is just the name of the functionality. There are several methods/formats to actually implement it, such as HLS, DASH, and BIF.

In this case, the functionality was added to the server API using the HLS format.

I'm one of the programmers of the Jellyfin Roku client. Would you mind sharing what things you found to be buggy and annoying in the client? We're always looking for feedback for things to work on and improve.

1hitsong ,
@1hitsong@lemmy.ml avatar

I'm also a big TV show watcher. All the things you mentioned I've had no issue with in the Roku client.

My first question would be if your server properly identified the episodes. That process is driven by the file names. Does your naming scheme follow the suggested format? https://jellyfin.org/docs/general/server/media/shows/

1hitsong ,
@1hitsong@lemmy.ml avatar

Oh yeah, you're the person who asked to have the season and episode number added to the OSD. I completed that update and am waiting for the PR to be reviewed and merged.

I knew about the audio option not matching if you choose a different video option. In fact, we noted that in our release post: https://jellyfin.org/posts/roku-200#-tv-episode-version-support

The others I've not heard of before. If it every becomes a nuisance, please open a ticket so we can investigate.

I'm one of the programmers on the Roku client. I've found I get the absolute best user feedback by simply asking people directly.

1hitsong Mod ,

For me it is that things I am watching suddenly jump ahead large chunks

Just to ensure I'm understanding. You're watching a video and during playback it jumps forward in time?

1hitsong Mod ,
@1hitsong@lemmy.ml avatar

I've never heard of such an issue. My mind first goes to is you server hardware beefy enough to serve what you're watching, but more info would be needed.

I'd suggest posting this to the Troubleshooting forum. There are tons of great peeps over there who can help diagnose all kinds of issues and get them sorted out.

The #1 thing we need are testers. There is such a wide variety of Roku devices, user settings, video formats, etc. that we simply can not test every scenario. This leads to gaps in testing where for the 2-3 of us who tested it for weeks never saw a bug that someone else experienced in the 1st hour after release.

Coding wise, it's easy to get involved.

  • You can pick a bug ticket and fix it.
  • Or pick an enhancement ticket and make it.
  • Or pick a feature request and make it.
  • Or add something you personally want to the client.

That last one is how I joined. I wanted to play music in the client, but at the time it didn't support music playback. So I wrote it.

I'm a JF developer and personally use Kavita for my books 🤣

Disney+ has started cracking down on password sharing in the US (www.engadget.com)

Disney+ started getting strict about password sharing in Canada last year, and now it's expanding the restriction to the US. According to The Verge, the streaming service has been sending out emails to its subscribers in the country, notifying them about a change in its terms of service. Its service agreement now states that...

🤘 Hope it's working well for y'all.

I suppose it depends on the issues you're having.

You can try looking through https://forum.jellyfin.org/f-guides-walkthroughs-tutorials and see if anyone covers what you're looking for.

If there's nothing there, I'd suggest posting your issues in the troubleshooting forum to get help.

1hitsong Mod ,

If it doesn't do it now, submit a feature request so we developers have it on the radar: https://features.jellyfin.org/

1hitsong Mod ,
@1hitsong@lemmy.ml avatar

Be sure to add which client you're referring to.

Someone else asked for this same feature last week. I'm working on it now.

Here's a preview image:

Doesn't that already happen if you don't touch the remote for a few seconds when you pause it?

1hitsong Mod ,
@1hitsong@lemmy.ml avatar

Oh, I can't vouch for anything other than Roku.

1hitsong Mod ,
@1hitsong@lemmy.ml avatar

Name them following the filename documentation and you should be good to go

1hitsong Mod ,
@1hitsong@lemmy.ml avatar

Yep. That should do it. Try it on one before doing them all, but that's exactly what I do and it works great.

I'm one of the Jellyfin Roku devs. What bugs are you experiencing?

1hitsong ,
@1hitsong@lemmy.ml avatar

Yeah, something is failing in playback and it's simply falling back to the previous screen. I'd suggest posting this to the troubleshooting forum. I'm sure the support team will be happy to help out!

Hope it's working well for ya'!

Are you a Jellyfin developer?

I am. Funny enough, I'm the one who made the new video player OSD 🤘

If so, I love you.

Oh. Well, this is awkward. I think of you more as a friend...
