Google's "Manifest V2" Chrome extension phaseout next month is expected to impact the original uBlock Origin extension, which still uses the V2 framework and has 37 million users (www.theregister.com)

The new MV3 architecture reflects Google's avowed desire to make browser extensions more performant, private, and secure. But the internet giant's attempt to do so has been bitterly contested by makers of privacy-protecting and content-blocking extensions, who have argued that the Chocolate Factory's new software architecture...

AlpacaChariot ,

Have you turned off Firefox's built-in enhanced tracking protection? If not, turn it off but leave uBlock Origin on and see if that solves your issue.

AlpacaChariot ,

I looked into these before and believe the inverters shut off if the mains shuts off. The DC side of the circuit would still be potentially dangerous though.

The inverters need there to be power in the mains circuit because they convert DC to AC and match the phase of the AC power they are generating to the mains supply.

More info on this here:

https://www.mississippifreepress.org/12782/the-troubling-past-of-forced-sterilization-of-black-women-and-girls-in-mississippi-and-the-south

I had assumed the women weren't sterilised by the normal contraceptive meds, but it seems they used a large dose of Depo-Provera which is a legit contraceptive injection. Not the usual pills but still.

There are also stories in that article of people having forced hysterectomies.

America's history of racism is so dark.

AlpacaChariot ,

Aren't they implementing manifest v3 for addons soon, which will cripple adblockers on chrome?

These guys have an incredible range and mix up different styles in a way that is quite unique. I'm not normally someone who pays that much attention to drums but their drummer really is amazing. The singer can do both clean and 'dirty' vocals.

First time in ages I've been excited about a new band!

I don't know about that, we have the same problem in civil engineering. At some point you just have to say that if someone can't read a drawing and do what it says they are not doing their job properly. If that means you need an engineer on site to read and interpret the drawing for people who can't or won't read then so be it.

    AlpacaChariot ,

Yeah that's exactly how I feel about it as well. Concrete spec is the classic one, you write a spec saying what you want and ALWAYS get a TQ back saying "hey can we use this completely different type of concrete from the supplier?". Complete waste of time.

    AlpacaChariot ,

I think unfortunately most people shy away from technical things including reading technical documentation. The answer to that problem is to have someone in the team on site who does read it and supervises all the people who can't or won't (i.e. an actual engineer). I can see how the profit motive drives companies to cut these people out but it should be seen as essential part of the process for safety reasons.

In civil / structural engineering, quite a lot of UK legislation and codes of practice has been developed following government reports into engineering failures, such as:

Loddon Bridge disaster --> Bragg report --> BS5975 code of practice for temporary works design

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loddon_Bridge_disaster

West Gate Yara bridge collapse --> Merrison Report --> system of independent design checking and competency requirements

    https://www.istructe.org/resources/blog/learning-from-history-box-girder-bridges/

I'm not an aerospace engineer but I'd like to think that something similar will happen in this case, although to be honest I'd be surprised if the legislation doesn't exist already.

    AlpacaChariot ,

Yeah I don't disagree with what you're saying, we don't put fresh grads on jobs without adequate supervision on the design side either. On both sides of the "fence" you need the experience to produce a good product; the two jobs are different and should be complimentary.

The schemes I have worked on that have been the most successful have had the designer and contractor working together closely from an early stage to produce something that works well, drawing on the past experience of both to anticipate potential issues and design them out.

Personally it took me about 6 years before I felt I was good at design. Experience really does count.

With the price of energy being what it is, people need the systemd flame wars to keep them warm!

    AlpacaChariot ,

    I'm feeling warmer already, thanks!

    AlpacaChariot ,

It made me chuckle, so thanks for that!

Well in this case the reputation for "warm beer" is true and I'm willing to die on this particular hill.

Proper cask ale should be served at between 8 and 12C, AKA cellar temperature, cool but not cold. Nothing beats a traditional pint of 'best bitter' in an old pub!

Plenty of people in the UK drink lager and other styles of beer that are more highly carbonated, stronger ABV, and served colder. Personally I'm not a fan but each to their own.

I live about an hour from London in a rural area with loads of great pubs but I find it difficult to find a nice beer in most parts of London. It's much easier to keep a keg of carbonated beer under pressure than a cask ale that you have to finish within a few days of tapping, which is why when a certain proportion of a pub's clientele start drinking other styles it just isn't worth it for the pub to keep real ale. Hopefully it won't become a niche thing.

    AlpacaChariot ,

I'm just grateful to have a place to discuss niche topics where there's a reasonable balance of power between users, mods, and admins.

Federation means no more rug pulling after years of building open source apps to access proprietary services.

Proper 'competition' between instance owners means nobody can degrade the quality of experience for a quick buck.

Thank you for your part in building a better alternative!

    AlpacaChariot ,

To be honest zooming isn't great on my 2010 yeti with a physical zoom wheel either.

These systems are always crap in cars because compared to modern phones they feel unbelievably slow; my yeti is now 14 years old but my phone is 2 years old so it's a pretty unfair comparison!

    AlpacaChariot ,

I don't disagree, just pointing out a general issue with car nav systems

    AlpacaChariot ,

The 5800X3D has the same core architecture as the 5800X but it runs at 11% lower base and 4% lower boost clocks. The lower clocks are in exchange for an extra 64MB of cache (96MB up from 32MB) and around 40% more money. For most real-world tasks performance is comparable to the 5800X. Cache sensitive scenarios such as low res. canned game benchmarks with a 3090-Ti ($2,000 USD) benefit at the cost of everything else. Be wary of sponsored reviews with cherry picked games that showcase the wins, conveniently ignore frame drops and gloss over the losses. Also watch out for AMD’s army of Neanderthal social media accounts on reddit, forums and youtube, they will be singing their own praises as usual. Instead of focusing on real-world performance, AMD’s marketers aim to dupe consumers with bankrolled headlines. The same tactics were used with the Radeon 5000 series GPUs. Zen 4 needs to bring substantial IPC improvements for all workloads, rather than overpriced "3D" marketing gimmicks. New PC builders have little reason to look further than the $260 12600K which, at a fraction of the price, offers better all round performance in gaming, desktop and workstation applications. Users with an existing AM4 build should wait just a few more months for better performance at lower prices with Raptor Lake or even Zen 4. The marketers selling expensive “3D” upgrades today will quickly move onto Zen 4 (3D) leaving unfortunate buyers stuck on an overpriced, 6 year old, dead-end, platform. [Mar '22 CPUPro]

    AlpacaChariot ,

Will it though? Seems like the kind of task that requires a huge amount of effort, way beyond the kind of capacity you get from casual contributions in peoples' spare time...might be difficult to maintain feature parity and implement new standards without a full time team on it.
